Deformation of doped NaCl crystals during uniaxial compression at temperatures of 4.2–293 K

The impurity weakening of crystalline NaCl:Mg and NaCl:Mn associated with purification of the matrix in a melt is demonstrated. This effect is manifested in a consistent change in the yield strength and mobility of dislocations. Its unusual temperature dependence is determined: in a number of cases weakening becomes greater as the temperature is lowered within the interval 293–4.2 K. A deviation in the elastic region of the stress-strain curves is observed to increase as the temperature is lowered. Plasticizing of crystalline NaCl is established: when the deformation temperature is lowered from 293 to 77 and 4.2 K the rate of rise in the yield strength of Cd²⁺ and Sr²⁺ doped samples is lower than that of undoped samples. On the structure of solutions of a system of singularly perturbed differential equations with nondiagonalizable limit operator

We construct uniform asymptotics of a solution of a heterogeneous system of singularly perturbed differential equations in the case of nondiagonalizable limit operator. We consider the case where the spectrum of the limit operator contains an unstable element at the point x = 0. Mössbauer studies on some new magnetic oxides

Three new magnetic oxides have been synthesised, viz., Li₂Fe₃VO₈, YFe₃TiO₈ and CaFe₃VO₈. XRD studies show that the first compound has a cubic symmetry of spinel type while the latter two show orthorhombic symmetry. All the three compounds are magnetic at room temperature, however, the first compound shows a large magnetic moment as compared to the other two. Their Mössbauer spectra at room temperature show distinct hyperfine split spectral lines. The present preliminary investigation indicates that the long range order is ferrimagnetic in Li₂Fe₃VO₈ and CaFe₃VO₈ while in YFe₃TiO₈ it is more likely to be canted antiferromagnetic.     

Dynamics of a polymer chain in an array of obstacles

On the basis of the model “polymer chain in an array of obstacles” the influence of the topology effects on the dynamics of concentrated polymer systems is investigated theoretically. The 1/z-expansion (where z is the coordinational number of the lattice of obstacles) is proposed for this problem. By means of this expansion the diffusion coefficient of a linear unclosed polymer chain is calculated. The equilibrium properties of linear closed chain (i.e. ring) unentangled with either of the edges of the lattice are investigated in detail. In particular, it is shown that the diffusion coefficient D of the center of mass of closed chain consisting of N links is proportional to N^−5/2.     

A multigrid method for predicting periodically fully developed flow

The use of multigrid methods in complex fluid flow problems is still under development. In this paper a full multigrid procedure has been incorporated in a finite volume solution for predicting fully developed fluid flow in a streamwise periodic geometry. Steady computations in two-dimensional body fitted co-ordinates have shown considerable savings in computation time by this multigrid method.     

Clathrate formation in the tetraisoamylammonium propionate-water system

In this paper we examine clathrate formation in the tetraisoamylammonium propionate-water binary system. We have found formation of four polyhydrates, two of which are metastable over the whole temperature range studied. All polyhydrate crystals were isolated and their compositions and densities determined; for (i-C₅H₁₁)₄NC₂H₅COO·36.5H₂O, unit cell parameters were additionally found. The results are compared with data for tetra-n-butylammonium carboxylate polyhydrates, and the structure of the title compounds is suggested. It is confirmed that the isoamyl radical stabilizes the tetradecahedral void of the clathrate hydrate framework better than the n-butyl radical. Raman spectroscopy of carbon fibres

Investigations of coated carbon fibres are reported using Raman spectroscopy. Relationships between different process parameters (for example precursor concentration, reactor temperature and various precursors) and the resulting types of carbon fibres are discussed.
