Molten lithium carbonate—sodium carbonate—potassium carbonate eutectic: The reaction of ten main group acidic oxides and oxyanions

The reactions of ten main group acidic oxides and oxyanions with molten alkali metal carbonate eutectics have been studied by thermogravimetry. Products have been identified by IR and Raman spectroscopy and stoichiometries suggested for the several reactions as oxide is progressively incorporated. Ultimately the tetrahedral ortho-oxyanion was formed except with the less acidic oxides (As₂O₃, Sb₂O₃, SiO₂). Sulphite was partially oxidised by the carbon dioxide atmosphere to sulphate.     

Co-activation of Gi and Gq proteins exerts synergistic effect on human platelet aggregation through activation of phospholipase C and Ca2+ signalling pathways

Our previous studies have shown that subthreshold concentrations of two platelet agonists exert synergistic effects on platelet aggregation. Here we studied the mechanism of synergistic interaction of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and epinephrine mediated platelet aggregation. We show that 5-HT had no or little effect on aggregation but it did potentiate the aggregation response of epinephrine. The synergistic interaction of 5-HT (1-5 microM) and epinephrine (0.5-2 microM) was inhibited by alpha2-adrenoceptor blocker (yohimbine; IC50= 0.4 microM), calcium channel blockers (verapamil and diltiazem with IC50 of 10 and 48 mM, respectively), PLC inhibitor (U73122; IC50=6 microM) and nitric oxide (NO) donor, SNAP (IC50=1.6 microM)). The data suggest that synergistic effects of platelet agonists are receptor-mediated and occur through multiple signalling pathways including the activation PLC/Ca2+ signalling cascades.     

Depolymerization Study of Pakistani Lignite Coal Influence of Pre‐treatments on Product Slate

Influence of pretreatments, i.e., demineralization and pre‐soaking in some solvents on the yields of liquefied products obtained from hydro‐depolymerization of Pakistani coal in a pool of hydrogen has been discussed. Results of hydrogenation experiments demonstrated that demineralizing the coal sample prior to liquefaction caused the yields to decrease compared with the virgin coal samples. The contribution of mineral matter of coal has been evaluated by comparing the yields of liquid products of virgin and leached samples. Increase in the yields obtained from the hydrogenation experiments of swollen coal samples was not satisfactorily significant.     

Thermal synthesis and characterisation of N,N'-di(chlorobenzyl) ureas

The thermal stability of the Schiff base ethylacetoacetate-o-chlorobenzylamine (bdII), N-o-chlorobenzyl-C-benzoyl acetamide (bdIII), and N-p-chlorobenzyl-C-benzoyl acetamide (bdIV) were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. II Gave N,N'-di(o-chlorobenzyl) urea (bdIa) at 60° C, whereas the thermogravimetric curves of III and IV indicate that reactions other than formation of I may occur. The urea derivatives (I) have also been prepared from benzylamines and the corresponding β-ketoester and identified.     

Composition of the basic fraction of marijuana and tobacco condensates: A comparative study by capillary GC/MS

Summary Combined capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry has been used to characterize the basic fraction of Mexican marijuana and standard tobacco smoke condensates. A thermostable Superox-coated glass capillary column permitted elution of relatively large nitrogen-containing compounds. Substantial qualitative and quantitative differences between the two materials were noted.Dedicated to Dr. L. S. Ettre on the occasion of his 60th birthday.     

Three new cholinesterase-inhibiting cis-clerodane diterpenoids from Otostegia limbata

Three new tricyclic cis-clerodane type diterpenoids trivially named as limbatolide A (1), limbatolide B (2) and limbatolide C (3) have been isolated from the roots of Otostegia limbata along with two known compounds; oleanic acid and beta-sitosterol. The structure elucidation of the new compounds was based primarily on two-dimensional (2D) NMR techniques. Compounds 1-3 displayed inhibitory potential in a concentration-dependent manner against acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE; EC 3.1.1.8) enzymes, respectively.     

Synthesis and structural characterization of a new heterobimetallic coordination complex of barium and cobalt for use as a precursor for chemical vapor deposition

Ba(dmae)2 (dmaeH=N,N-dimethylaminoethanol, C4H11NO) reacts with Co(acac)2 (acac=2,4-pentanedionate) to produce the trinuclear coordination complex [Ba2Co(acac)4(dmae)3(dmaeH)] in an 85% yield. Spectroscopic and single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments indicate that the complex possesses a structure in which two barium atoms and a cobalt atom are bridged by acac and dmae groups. The barium centers are eight and nine coordinate with BaO7N and BaO7N2 coordination spheres while the cobalt is a more regular CoO5N octahedron. This 2:1 heterobimetallic molecular complex was investigated as precursor for the deposition of thin film by AACVD. The film was characterized by SEM and XRD. TGA shows that the complex starts thermal decomposition upon heating in nitrogen atmosphere at 105 degrees C to produce barium cobalt oxide material of a Ba2CoO3 composition with an orthorhombic structure. The synthetic approach detailed here represents a unique route to the formation of a heterobimetallic barium cobalt coordination complex.     

Dichotenone-a and -b: two new enones from the marine brown alga Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) Lamour

Marine brown alga Dictyota dichotoma (Dictyotaceae) collected from Karachi coast of Arabian Sea yielded two new (1 and 2) enones (dolastane-diterpenoids) named: dichotenone-A and -B along with an olide (loliolide, 3) as a new source. Their structures have been characterized with the aid of 2D-NMR spectroscopic techniques.     

Beta-N-cyanoethyl acyl hydrazide derivatives: a new class of beta-glucuronidase inhibitors

Eight new beta-N-substituted acyl hydrazides along with their corresponding acyl derivatives were synthesized and screened for in vitro beta-glucuronidase inhibition and found to be active against the enzyme. All of these compounds were found to be noncompetitive inhibitors except for N'-(2-cyanoethyl)-4-hydroxy benzohydrazide (10), which was found to be an uncompetitive inhibitor. Structure-activity relationship studies indicated that the benzyloxy group present in compounds 12 and 13 is responsible for the beta-glucuronidase inhibition activity.     

Reduction of effects of structured non-specific absorption in the determination of arsenic and selenium by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry

The presence of iron and phosphates in biological matrices causes deuterium arc background-correction systems to overcompensate at several arsenic and selenium resonance lines. The addition of platinum as matrix modifier has a significant effect on both the absorbance/time profile of iron and the formation of gaseous phosphate decomposition products. A nickel/platinum matrix modifier is shown effectively to control the problems in the determination of selenium arising both from thermal instability and spectral interferences. The same combination eliminates the spectral interferences found at the arsenic resonance lines. Remaining problems are the thermal stabilization of organometallic arsenic compounds present in biological samples. When radioactived-labelled ⁷⁴As compounds prepared in vivo were applied, none of the tested matrix modifiers (Ni, Cu, Ag, Pd, Zr, Ce, Ce + magnesium nitrate) showed a significant influence on the volatility of arsenic in whole blood and urine from rats.
