Water-driven self-assembly of lipids displays a variety of liquid crystalline phases that are crucial for membrane functions. Herein, we characterize the temperature-induced phase transitions in two compositions of an aqueous self-assembly system of the octyl β-D-glucoside (βGlcOC(8)) system, using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. The phase transitions hexagonal ? micellar and cubic ? lamellar were investigated using tryptophan (Trp) and two of its ester derivatives (Trp-C(4) and Trp-C(8)) to probe the polar headgroup region and pyrene to probe the hydrophobic tail region. The polarity of the headgroup region was estimated to be close to that of simple alcohols (methanol and ethanol) for all phases. The pyrene fluorescence indicates that the pyrene molecules are dispersed among the tails of the hydrophobic region, yet remain in close proximity to the polar head groups. Comparing the present results with our previously reported one for βMaltoOC(12), increasing the tail length of the hexagonal phase from C(8) to C(12) leads to less interaction with pyrene, which is attributed to the more random and wobbling motion of the longer alkyl tail. We measured a reduction (more hydrophobic) in the ratio of the vibronic peak intensities of pyrene (I(1)/I(3)) for the lamellar phase compared to that of the cubic phase. The higher polarity in the cubic phase can be correlated to the nature of its interface, which curves toward the bulk water. This geometry also explains the slight reduction in polarity of the headgroup region compared to the other phases. Upon the addition of Trp-C(8), the fluorescence lifetime of pyrene is reduced by 28% in the lamellar and cubic phases, whereas the I(1)/I(3) value is only slightly reduced. The results reflect the dominant role of dynamic interaction mechanism between the C(8) chain of Trp-C(8) and pyrene. This mechanism may be important for these two phases since they participate in the process of membrane fusion. Both lipid compositions show completely reversible temperature-induced phase transitions, reflecting the thermodynamic equilibrium structures of their mesophases. Probing both regions of the different lipid phases reveals a large degree of heterogeneity and flexibility of the lipid self-assembly. These properties are crucial for carrying out different biological functions such as the ability to accommodate various molecular sizes.  相似文献

Highly crosslinked aliphatic and aromatic polyurethane-acrylate (PUA) coatings have been obtained by photopolymerization of multifunctional monomers. The discoloration and chemical modifications occurring upon accelerated QUV aging were monitored by UV and IR spectroscopy. The polymers were found to undergo photooxidation and loss of carbamate and phenyl groups, with lower quantum yields (10?3 mol photon?1) than in related linear polymers. Hydroxy-phenyl benzotriazole UV-absorbers have a limited effect on the degradation rate, at the concentration used (0.5%). Hindered amines (HALS) are substantially more effective, especially in aliphatic PUA. A 20-fold increase in the stabilization efficiency was found with the UVA + HALS combination. Aromatic PUA are more difficult to stabilize, because of the strong absorption and photolysis of the phenyl group which yields colored products. Radical-induced oxidation is predominant in aliphatic PUA and develops with long kinetic chains, while in aromatic PUA it competes with direct photolysis.  相似文献

The Pd-catalyzed reaction is performed with the in situ generated fluoroalkylselenyl chloride and various 8-aminoquinoline amides or sulfonamides. The reaction between a preassembled CuI bimetallic molecular clip with a short intermetallic distance and a series of fully aliphatic cyano‐capped ditopic linkers with increasing lengths was investigated. It is shown that, depending on the length of the ditopic linkers, the rational design of unprecedented supramolecular compact metallacycles containing fully aliphatic walls is possible. The specific preorganized molecular arrangement of the molecular clip used favors stabilizing interlinker London dispersion interactions, which allow, as the length of the linkers increases, the selective formation of discrete compact metallacycles at the expense of 1D coordination polymers. The generalizability of this approach was demonstrated by the reaction of fully aliphatic cyano‐capped linkers with two other types of preassembled CuI bimetallic molecular clips that also had short intermetallic distances.  相似文献

Samples of synthetic hydroxyapatite, Ca(10)(PO(4))(6)(OH)(2), obtained by wet method and calcined at 1173 K in air were used in an adsorption study of some essential amino acids, mainly histidine, methionine, and tryptophan. Adsorption isotherms were obtained using aqueous solutions of concentration range 2.7x10(-2)-1.3x10(-3) M at 303, 318, and 343 K, under near neutral conditions. The mode of adsorption was studied using IR spectroscopy. The results are discussed in terms of the dependence of the adsorption process both on the functional groups on the hydroxyapatite and on the solution chemistry of the aqueous amino acids solutions. The adsorption of Mo from dilute aqueous solutions (10(-3) to 3x10(-2) M) is effected on three samples of titania, two are anatase and the third is P25, which is composed of rutile and anatase. The adsorption isotherms at 298, 318, and 338 K are analyzed using a Langmuir linear equation. The isotherms on P25 showed a distinct inflection point that is reproduced by two linear portions, indicating different adsorption regimes. This adsorption behavior is explained as follows: with low amount adsorbed the adsorption is initiated by protonation of the basic hydroxyls on which the negatively charged MoO(4)(2-')s are adsorbed, and this is accompanied by an increase in the pH of the impregnating solution. At higher adsorption the coordinatively unsaturated Ti(4+) sites participate in the process, leading to a decline in the initial increase in pH. In the case of the two anatase samples the low surface area resulted in poor distribution of adsorption sites; consequently, the distinction between the two modes of adsorption was not entirely clear. The higher adsorption site density in the case of anatase is accompanied by a lower surface coverage, θ, than that for P25. The heat of adsorption, Q, on the three titania samples showed a linear increase with θ, which is represented by the regression equation: -Q=95.77θ-4.25 (R(2)=0.993). We construct analytical solutions for a system composed of a reaction–diffusion equation coupled with a purely diffusive equation. The question is to know if the traveling wave solutions of the reaction–diffusion equation can generate a traveling wave for the diffusion equation. Our motivation comes from the calcic wave, generated after fertilization within the egg cell endoplasmic reticulum, and propagating within the egg cell. We consider both the monostable (Fisher–KPP type) and bistable cases. We use a piecewise linear reaction term so as to build explicit solutions, which leads us to compute exponential tails whose exponents are roots of second-, third-, or fourth-order polynomials. These raise conditions on the coefficients for existence of a traveling wave of the diffusion equation. The question of positivity and monotonicity is only partially answered.  相似文献
