New Copper,Palladium and Nickel Catalytic Systems: An Evolution towards More Efficient Procedures

Metal‐catalysed reactions are a fundamental tool in synthetic chemistry. Increasingly challenging transformations can be accomplished only by means of certain metal catalysts. However, there still remains the need for a substantial decrease of the amount of catalyst, for better reuse or recycling of such active species, and for the avoidance of relatively toxic solvents in favour of environmentally friendly media. These facts apply to copper‐, palladium‐, and nickel‐catalysed cross‐coupling reactions, direct arylations, and oxidative processes. This account summarises our research on the last reactions, featuring an evolution towards more sustainable procedures in this field.     

Rapid Construction of the Aza-Propellane Core of Acutumine via a Photochemical [2 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction

Synthetic efforts toward the chlorinated aza-propellane alkaloid acutumine (1) are described. The key vicinal quaternary centers were constructed by a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of a furanyl-tetrahydroindolone. Dihydroxylation of the [2 + 2] product enabled a tandem retro-aldol/intramolecular ketalization reaction, which revealed the aza-propellane core of 1 while generating an unusual, caged, pentacyclic hemiketal product.     

Transmetallation reactions of a lithium disilenide

The first magnesium, copper and zinc disilenides were prepared via transmetallation reactions of a lithium disilenide and structurally characterised. The copper and zinc derivatives show red-shifted UV/vis absorptions due to admixture of metal d-orbitals to the highest occupied molecular orbital.     

Totally geodesic Riemannian foliations with locally symmetric leaves

We prove the arithmeticity of totally geodesic Riemannian foliations, with a dense leaf, on complete finite volume Riemannian manifolds when the leaves are isometrically covered by an irreducible symmetric space of noncompact type and rank at least 2. Multilevel Monte Carlo in approximate Bayesian computation

In the following article, we consider approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) inference. We introduce a method for numerically approximating ABC posteriors using the multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC). A sequential Monte Carlo version of the approach is developed and it is shown under some assumptions that for a given level of mean square error, this method for ABC has a lower cost than i.i.d. sampling from the most accurate ABC approximation. Several numerical examples are given.
