Nef Divisors in Codimension One on the Moduli Space of Stable Curves

Let M _g be the moduli space of smooth curves of genus g 3, and M¯ _g the Deligne-Mumford compactification in terms of stable curves. Let M¯ _g ^[1] be an open set of M¯ _g consisting of stable curves of genus g with one node at most. In this paper, we determine the necessary and sufficient condition to guarantee that a -divisor D on M¯ _g is nef over M¯ _g ^[1], that is, (D · C) 0 for all irreducible curves C on M¯ _g with C M¯ _g ^[1] .     

O*-algebras in Standard System

In the previous papers [10, 12] we have defined and studied the notion of standard generalized vectors which makes possible to develop the Tomita-Takesaki theory in algebras of unbounded operators called O^*-algebras. The main purpose of this paper is to consider when an O^*-algebra is algebraically or spatially isomorphic to an O^*-algebra with a standard generalized vector.     

Structure and stability of a homologous series of tin oxides

The structures and stabilities of a series of nonstoichiometric SnO2-x compounds, which are yet unknown experimentally, are predicted using the cluster expansion technique combined with first-principles calculations. A homologous series of Sn(n+1)O(2n) in which oxygen vacancies are layered on (101) planes of the rutile lattice is discovered. The homologous crystals are composed of divalent and quadrivalent Sn atoms. No trivalent Sn atoms are formed.     

Coexistence of solvated electrons and solvent valence anions in negatively charged acetonitrile clusters, (CH3CN)-n(n=10-100)

Anion photoelectron spectroscopy of acetonitrile cluster anions, (CH3CN)(-)(n) (n=10-100), successfully demonstrates the competitive coexistence of two different anionic species: a solvated electron and a solvent-bound valence anion. The distinctly different nature of these anions is revealed by hole-burning-type photoelectron spectroscopy and relative photodetachment cross section measurements. This unusual coexistence is attributed to the closely lying nature of their anionic states at just the number of solvent molecules sufficient to almost complete the first solvation layer.     

Bit-rate Flexible Picosecond Pulse Width Conversion with All-optical Mono-stable Multivibrator Laser Diode

An optical mono-stable multivibrator laser diode (MM-LD) is realized by using a multi-electrode distributed feedback laser diode. All-optical pulse-width conversion of ultra-short pulses to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) is achieved using an MM-LD. The MM-LD is adopted for a wide range of bit-rates between 2-10 Gbit/s by tuning the DC bias. Data format transformation from 10-Gbit/s return-to-zero optical signals to NRZ optical-signals is achieved with error free operation. Converted optical signals, which have a narrower spectral bandwidth and lower peak power than when input, are transmitted using a 1.3-μm zero dispersion fiber (1.3Aλ₀-SMF).     

Superconducting microwave cavity towards controlling the motion of polar molecules

We propose the use of superconducting microwave cavities for the focusing and deceleration of cold polar molecular beams. A superconducting cavity with a high quality factor produces a large ac Stark shift in polar molecules, which allow us to efficiently control molecular motion. Our discussion is based on the experimental characterization of a prototype cavity: a lead–tin-coated cylindrical copper cavity, which has a quality factor of 10⁶ and tolerates several watts of input power. Such a microwave device provides a powerful way to control molecules not only in low-field-seeking states, but also in high-field-seeking states such as the ground rotational state.
