Solvent effects on radical homo- and copolymerizations of methacryloyl fluroride

The effect of solvent in homo- and copolymerizations of methacryloyl fluoride (MAF) was investigated in various aromatic solvents. In these solvents, there is a significant effect on the rate of polymerization, on the tacticity of the resulting poly(methacryloyl fluoride), and on the copolymerization of MAF with methyl methacrylate (MMA). The equilibrium constants between MAF and aromatic solvents were determined from NMR spectroscopic measurements. These results indicated that the solvent effect on the MAF polymerization stems from changes in reactivity of MAF induced by the strong MAF–solvent interaction as well as stabilization of the MAF radical by solvents. Copolymerization of MAF with both p-methoxystyrene (MSt) and p-nitrostyrene (NSt) was also studied.     

Synthetic studies on β-lactam antibiotics. VII. Mild removal of the benzyl ester protecting group with aluminum trichloride

The benzyl ester protecting group in β-lactam derivatives can be cleanly removed by treatment with aluminum trichloride under mild conditions, preferably in the presence of anisole, to give the corresponding free acids in high yields.     

Observation of a soft phonon in linear chain compound (NbSe4)3I by Raman scattering

The phase transition of the linear chain compound (NbSe₄)₃I was studied by Raman scattering. At 78 K three new peaks were observed at 73 cm^?1, 205 cm^?1 and 261 cm^?1. The totally symmetric Raman peak at 73 cm^?1 shows anomalous temperature dependence. The frequency decreases with increasing temperature, and at high temperatures an anticrossing occurs with another peak observed at about 58 cm^?1. The Raman intensity decreases and the linewidth broadens remarkably as the temperature increases. These properties allow us to assign this peak to a soft phonon. This fact indicates clearly the existence of a structural phase transition of a displacive type below room temperature.

Trans-tetrahydrofuran-3-carbaldehydes are prepared by ruthenium-catalyzed isomerization of 4,7-dihydro-1,3-dioxepines and subsequent Lewis acid-catalyzed 1,3-alkyl migration.     

Visualization of large-scale aqueous solubility data using a novel hierarchical data visualization technique

It is a difficult task to recognize the trends in molecular physical properties relevant to a specific chemical class and find a way to optimize potential compounds. We present here a novel hierarchical data visualization technique, named "HeiankyoView", to visualize large-scale multidimensional chemical information. HeiankyoView represents hierarchically organized data objects by mapping leaf nodes as colored square icons and nonleaf nodes as rectangular borders. In this way, data objects can be expressed as equishaped icons without overlapping one another in the two-dimensional display space. HeiankyoView has been applied to visualize aqueous solubility data for 908 compounds collected from the published literature. When the results of a recursive partitioning analysis and hierarchical clustering analysis were visualized, the trends hidden in the solubility data could be effectively displayed as intuitively understandable visual images. Most interestingly, the data visualization technique, without any statistical computations, was able to assist us in extracting from such large-scale data meaningful information establishing that ClogP and the molecular weight are critical factors in determining aqueous solubility. Thus, HeiankyoView is a powerful tool to help us understand structure-activity relationships intuitively from a large-scale data set.
