Investigation of neutrino oscillations in the T2k long-baseline accelerator experiment

High-sensitivity searches for transitions of muon neutrinos to electron neutrinos are the main task of the T2K (Tokai-to-Kamioka) second-generation long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment. The present article is devoted to describing basic principles of T2K, surveying experimental apparatuses that it includes, and considering in detail the muon-range detector (SMRD) designed and manufactured by a group of physicists from the Institute of Nuclear Research (Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow). The results of the first measurements with a neutrino beam are presented, and plans for the near future are discussed.     

Interaction of a laminar boundary layer with external turbulence

Transition in the boundary layer on a flat plate in a turbulent flow is investigated experimentally and theoretically. It is established that over a broad range of flow conditions (variation of the intensity and scale of the external turbulence, the angle of attack, the shape of the leading edge, etc.) transition takes place without the formation of Tollmien-Schlichting waves, and its initial stages, including the amplification of disturbances, are described by the linearized unsteady three-dimensional boundary layer equations without a pressure gradient.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 55–65, September–October, 1989.The authors are grateful to N. Roton dipole moment

The roton excitation in the superfluid ⁴He does not possess a stationary dipole moment. However, a roton has an instantaneous dipole moment, such that at any given moment one can find it in the state either with positive or with negative dipole moment projection on its momentum direction. The instantaneous value of electric dipole moment of roton excitation is evaluated. The result is in reasonable agreement with recent experimental observation of the splitting of microwave resonance absorption line at roton frequency under external electric field.     

Theory of equilibrium flux lattice in UPt3 under magnetic field parallel to hexagonal crystal axis

We investigate Abrikosov lattice structures in the unconventional superconductor UPt (3) under magnetic field parallel to the hexagonal crystal axis. Only the two-dimensional E2 superconducting state among the many other states of different symmetry is compatible with the recent observation [A. Huxley et al., Nature (London) 406, 160 (2000)] of the flux lattice in the A phase misaligned with crystallographic directions. It is shown that the inequality of the London penetration depths in the basal plane directions resulting from the superposition of hexagonal crystal and superconducting state anisotropies leads for E2 to a slightly distorted triangular flux lattice.     

New limit on the T-violating transverse muon polarization in K+-->pi0mu+nu decays

A search for T-violating transverse muon polarization (P(T)) in the K+-->pi(0)mu(+)nu decay was performed using kaon decays at rest. A new improved value P(T)=-0.0017+/-0.0023(stat)+/-0.0011(syst) was obtained giving an upper limit |P(T)|<0.0050. The T-violation parameter was determined to be Imxi=-0.0053+/-0.0071(stat)+/-0.0036(syst) giving an upper limit |Imxi|<0.016.
