AFM study of BSA adlayers on Au stripes

Thin narrow Au stripes suitable for propagating long-range surface plasmon-polaritons were deposited by evaporation and lift-off on a thermal oxide layer on a silicon substrate, and modified by direct adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements reveal that BSA adsorbs onto the Au stripes from phosphate buffer solutions forming an adlayer having an average thickness of about 2 nm (surface mass density of about 2 ng/mm²). Comparisons with a simple adsorption model suggest the side-on adsorption of a single monolayer of BSA followed by denaturation and flattening. The BSA-coated stripes have an increased surface roughness compared to a virgin stripe.     

Coulomb analogy for non-Hermitian degeneracies near quantum phase transitions

Degeneracies near the real axis in a complex-extended parameter space of a Hermitian Hamiltonian are studied. We present a method to measure distributions of such degeneracies on the Riemann sheet of a selected level and apply it in classification of quantum phase transitions. The degeneracies are shown to behave similarly as complex zeros of a partition function.     

On Higher Order Pyramidal Finite Elements

In this paper we first prove a theorem on the nonexistence of pyramidal polynomial basis functions. Then we present a new symmetric composite pyramidal finite element which yields a better convergence than the nonsymmetric one. It has fourteen degrees of freedom and its basis functions are incomplete piecewise triquadratic polynomials. The space of ansatz functions contains all quadratic functions on each of four sub-tetrahedra that form a given pyramidal element.     

A Heuristic for Moment-Matching Scenario Generation

In stochastic programming models we always face the problem of how to represent the random variables. This is particularly difficult with multidimensional distributions. We present an algorithm that produces a discrete joint distribution consistent with specified values of the first four marginal moments and correlations. The joint distribution is constructed by decomposing the multivariate problem into univariate ones, and using an iterative procedure that combines simulation, Cholesky decomposition and various transformations to achieve the correct correlations without changing the marginal moments.With the algorithm, we can generate 1000 one-period scenarios for 12 random variables in 16 seconds, and for 20 random variables in 48 seconds, on a Pentium III machine.     

Separation of vibrational-electronic Hamiltonian in crude representation

A separation of the vibrational-electronic Hamiltonian in crude representation is presented. The separation is done in the following way: first we quantize only the electronic states on the unperturbed Hamiltonian level, then using the perturbation theory, we treat the terms where we have electronic operators to obtain new harmonic potential energy. Then we quantize a-posteriori the nuclear motion and as a result the only perturbation term is due to anharmonicity.     

Characterization and activity of sonochemically-prepared BSA microspheres containing Taxol--an anticancer drug

Proteinaceous microspheres of BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin) containing an anticancer drug, Taxol (paclitaxel) were fabricated using a sonochemical procedure and then assayed for chemical and biological activity. The sonochemical reaction did not compromise the drug, which became encapsulated in the BSA microspheres. The amount of the anticancer drug in the microspheres was determined by HPLC. Anticancer activity of the proteinaceous microspheres encapsulating the Taxol was tested on Mouse Multiple Myeloma cell line MPC-11. The influence of the Taxol microspheres on the cancer cells was different from pristine Taxol. It was found that Taxol in combination with the organic solvent causes the death of cancer cells.     

Constructive influence of noise-flatness in correlation ratchets

The influence of noise-flatness on overdamped motion of Brownian particles in a 1D periodic system with a simple sawtooth potential subjected to both unbiased thermal noise and three-level telegraph noise is considered. The exact formula for the stationary probability flux (current) is presented. The phenomenon of multiple current reversals and some topological properties of the hypersurface of zero current in the parameter space of noises are investigated and illustrated by phase diagrams. The conditions for the existence of four current reversals versus the switching rate of nonequilibrium noise are given. An alternative interpretation of the results in terms of cross-correlation between two dichotomous noises is presented.
