Non-integrability of some Painlevé VI-equations and dilogarithms

The paper studies the Painlevé VI^e equations from the point of view of Hamiltonian nonintegrability. For certain infinite number of points in the parameter space we prove that the equations are not integrable. Our approach uses recent advance in Hamiltonian integrability reducing the problem to higher differential Galois groups as well as the monodromy of dilogarithic functions.      

Hydrophobicity and thermal stability of fluorinated pentaerythritol esters

Wetting angles and limits of thermal stability of esters derived from pentaerythritol and perfluoro-, ω-chloropolyfluoro-, and perfluoropolyethercarboxylic acids were studied.     

A new class of Ornstein transformations with singular spectrum

It is shown that for any family of probability measures in Ornstein type constructions, the corresponding transformation has almost surely a singular spectrum. This is a new generalization of Bourgain's theorem [J. Bourgain, On the spectral type of Ornstein class one transformations, Israel J. Math. 84 (1993) 53–63], same result is proved for Rudolph's construction [D. Rudolph, An example of a measure-preserving map with minimal self-joining and applications, J. Anal. Math. 35 (1979) 97–122].     

A four-parameter partition identity

We present a new partition identity and give a combinatorial proof of our result. This generalizes a result of Andrews in which he considers the generating function for partitions with respect to size, number of odd parts, and number of odd parts of the conjugate. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification Primary—05A17; Secondary—11P81     

Structural and electrical characterization of SxSe100−x thin films

Thin films of samples of the glassy S_xSe_100−x system with 0 ≤ x ≤ 7.28 have been prepared by thermal evaporation technique at room temperature (300 K). X-ray investigations show that the structure of pure selenium (Se) does change seriously by the addition of small amount of sulphur S ≤7.28%. The lattice parameters were determined as a function of sulphur content. Results of differential thermal analysis (DTA) of the glassy compositions of the system S_xSe_100−x were discussed. The characteristic temperatures (T_g, T_c and T_m) were evaluated. Dark electrical resistivities, ρ, of S_xSe_100−x thin films with different thicknesses from 100 to 500 nm, were measured in the temperature range from 300 to 423 K. Two distinct linear parts with different activation energies were observed. The variation of electrical resistivity of examined compositions has been discussed as a function of the film thickness, temperature and the sulphur content. The application of Mott model for the phonon assisted hopping of small polarons gave the same two activation energies obtained from the resistivity temperature calculations.     

Magnetic and transport properties of double distorted perovskites CaCuMn6O12 and CaCu2Mn5O12

Magnetic and transport properties of double distorted perovskites CaCuMn₆O₁₂ and CaCu₂Mn₅O₁₂ are studied in a range 2–300 K. The leading role in magnetism of these compounds belongs to antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of Cu²⁺ in square coordination with Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺ in octahedral coordination. The values of saturation magnetization indicate that Mn³⁺ ions in square coordination are coupled ferromagnetically with Mn³⁺/Mn⁴⁺ in octahedral coordination. The colossal magnetoresistance in the pellet samples is due assumingly to intergranular spin-polarized tunneling of current carriers.     

Some remarks on Saint-Venant's principle

We consider a three-dimensional hyperelastic cylinder in Ω = D × [0, ∞]. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the deformations of the cross-sections in an equilibrium state. In this case we show that the solutions either have exponential decay or exponential growth. We give some initial conditions such that the latter case occurs.     

Stable hysteretic reflection of light at a nonlinear interface

We have observed a hysteretic (bistable) reflection of a Gaussian laser beam at the interface between glass and a liquid solution of polystyrene microspheres as nonlinear medium with both branches of the hysteretic curve being stable, in contrast to the results of previous experiments.     

Influence of the energy and velocity spread in the electron beam on the starting conditions and efficiency of a gyrotron

We study theoretically the influence of the spread of initial energies and velocities in the electron beam on the starting conditions and efficiency of a gyrotron. We compare various analytical and numerical models and the results of experimental studies of gyrotrons in which the interaction takes place at the first and second harmonics of the cyclotron frequency. The aftercavity interaction of the electron beam with the high-frequency field in the output waveguide transition is taken into account. The influence of the energy spread on the recuperation efficiency is estimated.
