A novel (E,E)-dioxime and its mono-, di- and trinuclear complexes bearing tetradentate octyl sulfanyl phenylamino substituents. Synthesis,characterization and electrochemical properties of its transition metal complexes

A new vic-dioxime, 13,14-bis-(hydroxyimino)-9,12,15,18-diazadithiaoctacosane, has been synthesized from 2-octylsulfanylaminobenzene and (E,E)-dichloroglyoxime. Mononuclear transition metal complexes of Ni^II, Cu^II, Co^II and Fe^II have been prepared and were found to have a metal–ligand ratio of 1:2. The synthesis of di- and trinuclear complexes was achieved with U^IVO₂ and Cu^II depending on the stoichiometry of the reactants. The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, ¹H-n.m.r., u.v.–vis, i.r., f.a.b.-m.s. and by cyclic voltammetry.     

A survey of 222Rn concentrations in dwellings of Turkey

As part of a national program to determine public exposure to natural radiation, indoor air ²²²Rn concentrations were determined in dwellings of Turkey. The ²²²Rn concentrations were measured with time-integrating passive nuclear etched track detectors in 27 provincial centers. The indoor radon concentrations were found to be in the range of 10-380 Bq^.m^-3. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Summary 4-Benzoyl-5-phenylfuran-2,3-dione (1) and the urethanes2 combine under loss of carbon monoxide yielding the open chain dibenzoylacetic acid derivatives3 and4. 3a, b only can be cyclized to the oxazinone5. The keto-enole tautomerism3 4 is further investigated with aid of semiempirical quantum chemical calculations, based upon the molecular geometry of3a, deduced from an X-ray study.

The Synthesis of Novel Methotrexate-like Compounds

Summary. Methotrexate (MTX) is a folate antagonist used in treatment of several chronic inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. In this study, new MTX-like compounds that may-be potential anticancer agents were synthesized and their structures were determined by IR, UV, GC-MS, ¹H NMR, and ¹³C NMR spectra. Also, in this study, a series structurally related to MTX or folate analogous compounds were evaluated whether they have inhibitory properties on the dihydrofolate reductase activity (DHFR).     

Modification of Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA binding protein with gold nanoparticles for electrochemical detection of DNA hybridization

The unique binding event between Escherichia coli single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) and single-stranded oligonucleotides conjugated to gold (Au) nanoparticles is utilized for the electrochemical detection of DNA hybridization. SSB was attached onto a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of single-stranded oligonucleotide modified Au nanoparticle, and the resulting Au-tagged SSB was used as the hybridization label. Changes in the Au oxidation signal was monitored upon binding of Au tagged SSB to probe and hybrid on the electrode surface. The amplified oxidation signal of Au nanoparticles provided a detection limit of 2.17 pM target DNA, which can be applied to genetic diagnosis applications. This work presented here has important implications with regard to combining a biological binding event between a protein and DNA with a solid transducer and metal nanoparticles.     

Computation of Rotation Matrices Making Lined‐Up to the Local Cartesian Coordinates

Rotation matrices were expressed in terms of Gaunt coefficients and complex spherical harmonics. The rotation matrices were calculated using two different ways. In the first, Gaunt coefficients and normalized complex spherical harmonics were directly calculated using binomial coefficients; in the second, Gaunt coefficients and complex spherical harmonics were recursively calculated. The methods were compared with respect to accuracy and computation time (CPU) for low and very high quantum numbers.     

Efficient syntheses of (±)-hydrangenol, (±)-phyllodulcin and (±)-macrophyllol

In this paper we report on a efficient and flexible synthetic route towards the total syntheses of the dihydrocoumarine derivatives hydrangenol (1), phyllodulcin (1a) and macrophyllol (6b). The syntheses started with a readily available phosphonium salt 2 and suitable modified benzaldehydes 3/3a/3b resulting in 46 to 61% overall yields in three to four-steps sequences. The racemic products could be separated by chiral HPLC. The evidence of the (R)-enantiomer for sweetness could be demonstrated for 1a.     

Migration behaviour and separation of tramadol metabolites and diastereomeric separation of tramadol glucuronides by capillary electrophoresis

Capillary electrophoresis with UV detection was used to separate tramadol (TR), a centrally acting analgesic, and its five phase I (M1, M2, M3, M4, M5) and three phase II metabolites (glucuronides of M1, M4 and M5). Several factors were evaluated in optimisation of the separation: pH and composition of the background electrolyte and the influence of a micellar modifier, sodium dodecyl sulfate. Baseline separation of TR and all the analytes was obtained with use of 65 mM tetraborate electrolyte solution at pH 10.65. The lowest concentrations of the analytes that could be detected were below 1 microM for the O-methylated, below 2 microM for the phenolic and ca. 7 microM for the glucuronide metabolites. The suitability of the method for screening of real samples was tested with an authentic urine sample collected after a single oral dose (50 mg) of TR. After purification and five-fold concentration of the sample (solid-phase extraction with Oasis MCX cartridges), the parent drug TR and its metabolites M1, M1G, M5 and M5G were easily detected, in comparison with standards, in an interference-free area of the electropherogram. Diastereomeric separation of TR glucuronides in in vitro samples was achieved with 10 mM ammonium acetate-100 mM formic acid electrolyte solution at pH 2.75 and with basic micellar 25 mM tetraborate-70 mM SDS electrolyte solution at pH 10.45. Both separations showed that glucuronidation in vitro produces glucuronide diastereomers in different amounts. The authentic TR urine sample was also analysed by micellar method, but unambiguous identification of the glucuronide diastereomers was not achieved owing to many interferences.     

Manganese(III) acetate mediated synthesis of 3-trifluoroacetyl-4,5-dihydrofurans and 3-(dihydrofuran-2(3H)-ylidene)-1,1,1-trifluoroacetones by free radical cyclization. Part 1

2-Trifluoroacetyl-4,5-dihydrofurans were obtained by manganese(III) acetate mediated radical cyclization of trifluoromethyl-1,3-dicarbonyl compounds (1a-c) with conjugated alkenes (2a-h). The reaction of 1,1,1-trifluoropentane-2,4-dione (1a) with propenylbenzene and 1,1-diphenyl-1-butene surprisingly yielded 3-(dihydrofuran-2(3H)-ylidene)-1,1,1-trifluoroacetones besides 3-trifluoroacetyl-4,5-dihydrofurans.     

Screening of acetogenin-producing plants in Brazilian flora

The acetogenins are strongly bioactive natural compounds present in the bark, roots, leaves, and seeds of manyAnnonaceae plants. They are modified fatty acids and their cytotoxicities have been determined for different biological models including the in vitro growth inhibition of several human cancer cell lines. Very low acetogenin yield (< 0.1 g%) has been found previously in native phytobiomass, and we have now investigated the nonpredatory exploitation of the seeds as acetogenin sources characterizing the seed triacylglycerols (dominant fraction; > 90% of the whole lipid extracts) as potential valuable by-products.
