The first aldehyde-derived crystalline geminal diol lacking internal electronic stabilization

The first stable crystalline geminal diol of an aldehyde lacking electron-withdrawing groups on the-carbon was synthesized fromd-sorbitol and characterized by¹H and¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and single-crystal x-ray studies. Each hydroxyl is a donor for a single, unique intermolecular hydrogen bond. Only one hydroxyl acts as an acceptor. No intramolecular hydrogen bonding is observed in the crystal.     

A simple convenient synthesis of trans-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-octahydrophenanthridines

trans-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,10b-Octahydrophenanthridine, the 9-methoxy analog, and 5-methyl derivatives ( 6a,6b ) of each have been synthesized from trans-phenylcyclohexylamines ( 2a,2b ) and ethyl chloroformate followed by cyclization and reduction or by cyclization, N-methylation and reduction. The oximes ( la,1b ) of 2-phenylcyclohexanone and the m-methoxy relative, a mixture of the syn and anti isomers, were reduced to 2a and 2b with sodium and ethanol. Hydrogenation (platinum oxide-acetic acid) of 1a gave in addition to 2a , a small yield of 2-cyclohexylcyclohexyl-amine. Similar hydrogenation of 1b gave only this fully reduced compound.     

Preparation,and infrared and thermal properties of six adducts of tetrakis-(8-hydroxyquinolinato)thorium(IV)

Six adducts of the tctrakis(8-hydroxyquinolinato) complex of thorium(IV) with 8-hydroxyquinoline, pyridine, urea, dimethylsulphoxide, dimethylformamide and 1,10-phenanthroline were prepared and characterized, the infrared bands for the room-temperature forms are given and their particular thermal properties are reported. The thermal analyses were performed mostly in the presence of air, but in some cases an argon atmosphere was used for comparison. The adducts were lost from the principal complex at temperatures varying between 110 and 290°. Intermediate oxygenated complexes were formed in each case at about 400°. The thermal data suggest the standardization of a procedure for the formation of Th(C₉H₆NO)₄.

Zusammenfassung Sechs Addukte des Tetrakis(8-hydroxyquinolinato)-Komplexes von Thorium(IV) mit 8-Hydroxyquinolin, Pyridin, Harnstoff, Dimethylsulphoxid, Dimethylformamid und 1,10-Phenanthrolin wurden dargestellt und charakterisiert. Infrarotbanden und spezielle thermische Eigenschaften der Raumtemperatur-Formen sind angegeben. Die thermischen Analysen wurden meist in Luft ausgeführt, in einigen Fällen zu Vergleichszwecken aber auch in Argonatmosphäre. Die Addukte wurden vom Komplex bei Temperaturen zwischen 110 und 290 °C abgegeben. Intermediäre oxydierte Komplexe wurden in jedem Fall bei etwa 400 °C gebildet. Die thermischen Daten ermöglichen die Standardisierung eines Verfahrens zur Darstellung von Th(C₉H₆NO)₄.

Dual-column GC analysis of mediterranean fish for ten organochlorine pesticides and sixty two chlorobiphenyls

The simultaneous analysis of α-HCH, β-HCH, γ-HCH, HCB, p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDE, o,p′-DDT, mirex, dieldrin and 62 chlorobiphenyl congeners on two parallel capillary GC columns of different polarity is described for nine Mediterranean fish species. Ten commercially available columns with stationary phases completely characterized in respect of their PCB elution patterns were considered for dual-column GC-ECD analysis. The combination of a 60 m × 0.25 mm i.d. column coated with a 0.25 μm film of 50% diphenyl dimethylsiloxane and a series combination of a 25 m × 0.25 mm i.d. column coated with a 0.25 μm film of 5% diphenyl dimethylsiloxane with a 25 m × 0.22 mm i.d. column coated with a 0.10 μm film of 1, 10-dicarba-closo-dodecarborane dimethylpolysiloxane furnished the highest number of separated chlorobiphenyl congeners (104). The dual-column GC system performed with high stability and reproducibility over a broad concentration range (1–3000 ng/g lipid) of the organochlorine compounds in the investigated fish.     

Synthesis and Structure of a 1,3-alternate-Thiacalix[4]arene diamide Derivative

A novel receptor possessing two complexation sites and bearing 1,3-alternate conformation based on thiacalix[4]arene, confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis, was prepared. The tetrathiacalix[4]arene diamide shows strong intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The binding behavior towards K⁺ and halides has been examined by ¹H NMR titration experiments.     

Estimation of Multinomial Probabilities under a Model Constraint

In this paper estimation of the probabilities of a multinomial distribution has been studied. The five estimators considered are: unrestricted estimator (UE), restricted estimator (RE) (under model ), preliminary test estimator (PTE) based on a test of the model , shrinkage estimator (SE) and the positive-rule shrinkage estimator (PRSE). Asymptotic distributions of these estimators are given under Pitman alternatives and the asymptotic risk under a quadratic loss has been evaluated. The relative performance of the five estimators is then studied with respect to their asymptotic distributional risks (ADR). It is seen that neither of the preliminary test and shrinkage estimators dominates the other, though each fares well relative to the other estimators. However, the positive rule estimator is recommended for use for dimension 3 or more while the PTE is recommended for dimension less than 3.     

Chelating ion-exchangers containing n-substituted hydroxylamine functional groups: Part 6. Sorption and separation of gold and silver by a polyhydroxamic acid

The sorption and desorption characteristics of gold and silver on a polyhydroxamic acid chelating resin are described. Gold is quantitatively sorbed from 0.5 M nitric acid or neutral solutions, and readily eluted with 0.5% ($\text{w}\text{v}$) potassium cyanide solution. Silver is removed from 0.05 M nitric acid or neutral solutions, and can be eluted with the cyanide solution or with 0.5 M nitric acid. Gold can be quantitatively separated from copper, iron and silver; gold and silver are sorbed from dilute cyanide solutions. Tests with river water and other eluting systems are reported.
