Most of our knowledge of chemistry is derived from experiments carried at the Earth's surface, at pressures near one atmosphere. However, most elements and compounds in the universe exist under conditions of extremely high pressures, often combined with high temperatures, deep within the planets and stars. Under these conditions, new high-density crystal forms occur, species usually known only as molecules become dense covalent or ionic solids, and insulators and semiconductors become metals and even superconductors. Valency states and coordination numbers are changed, and it is expected that chemical bonding and reactivity is modified. Self-assembling biomolecules that form highly ordered structures have attracted interest as potential alternatives to conventional lithographic processes for patterning materials. Here, we introduce a general technique for patterning nanoparticle arrays using two-dimensional crystals of genetically modified hollow protein structures called chaperonins. Constrained chemical synthesis of transition metal nanoparticles is initiated using templates functionalized with polyhistidine sequences. These nanoparticles are ordered into arrays because the template-driven synthesis is constrained by the nanoscale structure of the crystallized protein. We anticipate that this system may be used to pattern different classes of nanoparticles based on the growing library of sequences shown to specifically bind or direct the growth of materials. 相似文献

A new solid-state metathesis synthesis route was applied to obtain bulk samples of amorphous or microcrystalline Si and Ge. The method involves reaction of Zintl phases such as NaSi or NaGe, with ammonium or metal (e.g., CuCl, CoBr2) halides. The driving force for the solid-state reaction is provided by the formation of alkali halides and the transition metals or metal silicides, or gaseous ammonia and hydrogen. The semiconductors were purified by washing to remove other solid products. The amorphous semiconductors were obtained in bulk form from reactions carried out at 200-300 °C. Syntheses at higher temperatures gave rise to microcrystalline semiconductors, or to micro-/nanocrystalline particles contained within the amorphous material. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) provides an alternative chemical analytical technique that obviates the issues of sample preparation and sample destruction common to most laboratory-based analytical methods. This contribution explores the capability of LIBS analysis to identify carbonate and silicate minerals rapidly and accurately. Fifty-two mineral samples (18 carbonates, 9 pyroxenes and pyroxenoids, 6 amphiboles, 8 phyllosilicates, and 11 feldspars) were analyzed by LIBS. Two composite broadband spectra (averages of 10 shots each) were calculated for each sample to produce two databases each containing the composite LIBS spectra for the same 52 mineral samples. By using correlation coefficients resulting from the regression of the intensities of pairs of LIBS spectra, all 52 minerals were correctly identified in the database. If the LIBS spectra of each sample were compared to a database containing the other 51 minerals, 65% were identified as a mineral of similar composition from the same mineral family. The remaining minerals were misidentified for two reasons: 1) the mineral had high concentrations of an element not present in the database; and 2) the mineral was identified as a mineral with similar elemental composition from a different family. For instance, the Ca–Mg carbonate dolomite was misidentified as the Ca–Mg silicate diopside. This pilot study suggests that LIBS has promise in mineral identification and in situ analysis of minerals that record geological processes. 相似文献

The use of membrane processes for the recovery of fermentation products has been gaining increased acceptance in recent years.
Pervaporation has been studied in the past as a process for simultaneous fermentation and recovery of volatile products such
as ethanol and butanol. However, membrane fouling and low permeate fluxes have imposed limitations on the effectiveness of
the process. In this study, we characterize the performance of a substituted polyacetylene membrane, poly[(l-trimethylsilyl)-l-propyne]
(PTMSP), in the recovery of ethanol from aqueous mixtures and fermentation broths. Pervaporation using PTMSP membranes shows
a distinct advantage over conventional poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) membranes in ethanol removal. The flux with PTMSP is
about threefold higher and the concentration factor is about twofold higher than the corresponding performance achieved with
PDMS under similar conditions. The performance of PTMSP with fermentation broths shows a reduction in both flux and concentration
factor relative to ethanol-water mixtures. However, the PTMSP membranes indicate initial promise of increased fouling resistance

Sensitive and selective nuclear reaction methods have been sought for the nuclear microprobe measurement of the spatial distributions
of13C and13C/12C ratios. The13C(α, n)16O reaction, with neutron detection, is the most selective for13C, and has a sensitivity of ca. 100 ppm. The reactions13C(d, p)14C and12C(d, p)13C, with proton detection, are the most sensitive for the simultaneous measurement of13C and12C, with detection limits of 30 and 2 ppm respectively. Less sensitive alternative reaction pairs are;13C(3He, p)15N and12C(3He, p)14N;13C(d, nγ)14N and12C(d, pγ)13C;13C(3He, pγ)15N and12C(3He, pγ)14N. Abstract— Ellipsometric angles and reflectivity of black lipid membranes containing either egg lecithin or chloroplast extracts were measured at a wavelength of 6328 Å. Evidence was found for positive uniaxial anisotropy in membranes of lecithin. If the thickness of those films is assumed to be 62 Å, the refractive index normal to the film surface is 1.471 ± 0.004, and the refractive index parallel to the film surface is 1.454 ± 0.003. The results for membranes of chloroplast extracts also indicate a positive anisotropy in the indices of absorption. 相似文献

In order to determine the influence of 'sulphur-containing' spacers on the formation of mesophases in low molecular mass compounds, we have examined the mesomorphic behaviour of molecules which consists of a 4-biphenyl unit linked to an unbranched fluorinated chain via a short spacer including at least a sulphur atom. The synthesis of these compounds has been carried out from 2-F-butylethyl iodide or from the 2-F-alkylethyl mercaptans in the case of the F-hexyl and F-octyl tails. The mesomorphic properties have been characterized by polarized light microscopy and by differential thermal analysis showing the peculiar contribution of each of the spacers. The influence of the fluorinated chain and the shape of the connector on the stability of the mesophases has been investigated. The compounds with a thioether or a hemithioacetal spacer showed no mesomorphic properties, whereas the structures with a thioester spacer showed a very interesting enantiotropic behaviour of the smectic A type over a wide temperature range. Furthermore from the series exhibiting liquid crystalline behaviour, increasing the number of fluoromethylene units simultaneously increases both the melting and the clearing temperature. These mesomorphic properties within the fluorinated series are compared with those of their monocatenar hydrocarbon homologues. 相似文献
