Electron and positron impact excitation of hydrogen from the initially excited 22S state to 32S and 32P states

The total and differential cross sections for the electron and positron impact excitation of hydrogen from its initially excited metastable 2²S state to 3²S and 3²P states are reported. A distorted-wave approximation theory is used for the calculation. The angular correlation parameters, Ly and alignment angle are also reported for 2²S-3²P excitation. For comparison, similar first Born results are also obtained. Interesting features are noted on comparing our distorted wave results with the first Born results as well as with the other available results forn ²S andn ²P (n=2,3) excitations from the ground 1²S state of hydrogen.     

Approximation and growth of generalized axisymmetric potentials

The regular solutions of generalized axisymmetric potential equation , a>−1/2 are called generalized axisymmetric potentials. In this paper, the characterizations of lower order and lower type of entire GASP in terms of their approximation error {E_n} have been obtained.     

Synthesis and studies of CuHg(NCX)4 (X = S,Se) and their complexes and application of the softness parameter in the elucidation of their structure

Complexes of CuHg(NCS)₄, CuHg(NCS)₂ (NCSe)₂ and CuHg(NCSe)₄ with tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, pyridine, 2-aminopyridine, nicotinamide, bipyridine and phenanthroline have been prepared and comparative studies made. Bipyridine and phenanthroline form cationic—anionic [CuL₃]²⁺ [Hg(SCN)₄]^2? (L = bipy, phen) complexes with CuHg(NCS)₄ and dinuclear bridged complexes with CuHg(NCSe)₄ and CuHg(NCS)₂ (NCSe)₂. For other ligands the nature of the complexes is binuclear or polynuclear. The comparative stability of the -XCN- bridge (X = S, Se) is CuHg(NCSe)₄ > CuHg(NCS)₂ (NCSe)₂ > CuHg(NCS)₄.     

Toward understanding the ionization of biomarkers from micrometer particles by bio-aerosol mass spectrometry

The appearance of informative signals in the mass spectra of laser-ablated bio-aerosol particles depends on the effective ionization probabilities (EIP) of individual components during the laser ionization process. This study investigates how bio-aerosol chemical composition governs the EIP values of specific components and the overall features of the spectra from the bio-aerosol mass spectrometry (BAMS). EIP values were determined for a series of amino acid, dipicolinic acid, and peptide aerosol particles to determine what chemical features aid in ionization. The spectra of individual amino acids and dipicolinic acid, as well as mixtures, were examined for extent of fragmentation and the presence of molecular ion dimers, which are indicative of ionization conditions. Standard mixtures yielded information with respect to the significance of secondary ion plume reactions on observed spectra. A greater understanding of how these parameters affect EIP and spectra characteristics of bio-aerosols will aid in the intelligent selection of viable future biomarkers for the identification of bio-terrorism agents.
