Three lanostane triterpenoids with antitrypanosomal activity from the fruiting body of Hexagonia tenuis

During the search for new antitrypanosomal drug leads, three new antitrypanosomal compounds, hexatenuins A–C (1–3), were isolated from the fruiting body of Hexagonia tenuis. 1 and 3 possessed an unusual malonate half-ester functional group at C-3 position, and 1 and 2 had a spirostructure in the side-chain. Their structures were elucidated using MS analyses, extensive 2D-heteronuclear NMR data interpretation. Compounds 1–3 showed in vitro antitrypanosomal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei with IC₅₀ values of 0.57, 8.60 and 5.62 μg/ml, respectively.     

Surface dilational moduli of polymer and blended polymer monolayers spread at air-water interfaces

Surface dilational moduli of polymer monolayers, blended polymer monolayers, and polymer particle monolayers spread at air–water interfaces are reviewed, focusing on measurements using surface pressure isotherm, surface pressure relaxation, and oscillating barrier methods. Differences between the surface dilational moduli of condensed polymer monolayers and expanded polymer monolayers are explored. Moreover, the features of the surface dilational moduli in blended polymer monolayers are discussed in terms of their miscibility.     

Radiation-induced emission from golden hamster embryo cells

Emission from high-energy-electron-irradiated golden hamster embryo (GHE) cells has been studied over the temperature range 12–300 K both by a one-shot-single-photon-counting method and by photocurrent measurements with an oscilloscope. Emission from the irradiated phosphate buffered saline (PBS) also has been studied. The emission spectra from PBS at 12 and 77 K show a maximum around 330 and 380 nm, respectively, which are the same spectra as those from irradiated pure H₂O. The emission from irradiated GHE consists of the new band at 480 nm in addition to the emission from H₂O. The 480 nm emission is observed at the temperature range of 12–300 K, though the emission at 300 K is much lower than that at low temperature. The 480 nm emission is ascribed to the transition from excited organic substances in GHE cells. The intensity of 480 nm emission at 300 K increases linearly with increasing irradiation-dose in the range of 11–600 Gy.     

Peptidehelicenes in solution and gel: chiral discrimination through interactions between two types of helixes

Helical [5]thiaheterohelicene 5HM, which rapidly interconverts between P and M enantiomers in solution, was connected to helical l-phenylalanine oligomers with an ester linkage to give peptidehelicenes (5Fn, where n: number of bonded phenylalanines). The characteristics of 5F4 and 5F5 with two types of helixes in a molecule were investigated, particularly in comparison with those of 5F1–5F3 with an incomplete coil of a peptide moiety. l-Phenylalanine peptide chains induced a shift in the equilibrium between the P and M helixes of 5HM toward the P side for all the 5Fns examined. The enantiomeric excess (ee) of the P form increased with a decrease in temperature, together with an elongation of the peptide chains. 5F4 and 5F5 in hot solutions of some solvents formed a gel at room temperature, whereas 5F1–5F3 showed no such behavior. In this gel, the stable helical form of the 5HM moiety in 5F4 and 5F5 was observed to be the M form in contrast to that in their solutions.     

Marcus contextual languages consisting of primitive words

In this paper we prove that the language of all primitive (strongly primitive) words over a nontrivial alphabet can be generated by certain types of Marcus contextual grammars.     

Electrical transport in n-type semiconducting Ge120BixSe70−xTe10 glasses

Resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured as a function of temperature and composition for Ge₂₀Bi_xSe_70?xTe₁₀ glasses (x = 0–11). The results were compared with the case of of Ge₂₀Bi_xSe_80?x glasses to see on the electrical properties the influence of the substitution of Te for a part of Se. The glasses show n-type conduction for x ? 9, which was not affected by the substitution of Te. The resistivity was about three orders of magnitude lower for the glasses with x < 10, and remained almost the same for x ? 10, compared with the glasses not containing Te. From the composition dependence of the calculated concentration of covalent bonds in the glasses, it was proposed that the appearance of n-type conduction was closely related to the formation of a sufficient number of BiSe bonds and the disappearance of the bonds between two chalcogen atoms such as TeSe or SeSe bonds, and that the remarkably low resistivity in the present glasses with x < 10 was likely to be attributed to the formation of TeSe bonds.
