Excitation functions for some output channels following the p +55Mn interaction atE p=1·3–2·0 MeV

Excitation functions for the⁵⁵Mn(p, p )⁵⁵Mn,⁵⁵Mn(p, n )⁵⁵Fe and⁵⁵Mn(p, )⁵⁶Fe reactions are studied for proton beam energyE _p=1·3–2 MeV. The excitation functions are established from yield functions for -rays emitted from the first excited states of final nuclei. Many resonances are observed and competition of their decay into all three output channels is analysed. Spin-parity assignment for some resonant states in the⁵⁶Fe compound nucleus is deduced.Participated partly in the course of his work on a Thesis.The authors wish to thank the staff of the Van de Graaff accelerator at Charles University in Prague for the efficient operation of the machine and dr. The search for top quarks at hadron colliders: a realistic appraisal

We study means of identifying top quarks of mass in the range 70–120 GeV at the CERN and FNAL \(\bar pp\) colliders. We show that “W+dijet” production presents a serious background to the conventional “isolated electron+dijet” signature of top. We study an improved signature, calculate the expected event rates, and discuss the determination of the mass of the top quark.     

On FMR modes in bubble domain lattices

Two solutions of the problem of non-uniform ferromagnetic resonance in a hexagonal bubble domain lattice are presented under the simplifying assumption of lattice period much smaller than the film thickness. Fine divisions of the lattice cell into supposedly uniform subdomains render sets of linear equations for the local amplitudes which are solved numerically. Analytical solution of the time-dependent magnetostatic (Walker-mode) problem is obtained by expansion in simple elliptic functions similar to that suggested by Sigal. The results support, respectively, the interpretation of FMR experiments derived by Klem and Kaczér from a crude (minimal) subdivision of the elementary cell, and the three-mode dipolar-field model recently proposed by the author on a largely intuitive basis.     

CIRCADIAN RHYTHM OF EXTRARETINAL PHOTOSENSITIVITY IN HATCHLING ALLIGATORS, ALLIGATOR MISSISSIPPIENSIS

Hatchling American alligators, Alligator mississippiensis , display a diel rhythm of extra-retinal (non-pineal) photosensitivity. There is a bimodal pattern in the threshold fluence rate required for initiating and effecting extra-retinally-mediated phototaclic responses. Significantly greater threshold fluence rates are required in the photophase than the scotophasc of a 12 h light: 12 h dark cycle. Under constant darkness there continues an endogenous, apparently circadian rhythm of extra-retinal photosensitivity. In all cases there is a significantly greater photosensitivity at lower temperatures.     

A New Method for the Construction of Macrolides Stereoselective Synthesis of (±)-Phoracantholide J. Preliminary communication

Starting from 5-chloro-2-pentanone ( 1 ) the naturally occurring 10-membered lactone phoracantholide J ( 8a ) has been synthesized as its racemate in a sequence of six steps (Scheme 2). Salient features of the syntheis include an internal selenium assisted acetal formation ( 4→5 ) and a stereoselective Claisen rearrangement ( 6→7→8 ). This general synthetic strategy offers an alternative approach towards the construction of macrocyclic lactones.     

Studies in mass spectrometry. IV—Fragmentation of aryltriflates. Substituent effects on [ArO]+ ion abundances: Looking for a best suited electron energy in the steady state approach. Experimental evidence for the ‘through bond’ stabilization of aryl cations by meta electron donor Substituents

The fragmentation patterns of 24 substituted phenyltrifluoromethanesulfonates has been determined by exact mass and metastable transition measurements. The influence of the ring substituent(s) on the abundance of the [ArO]+ ions has been investigated at low energies and a new standard parameter for plotting against Hammett's ó constants is proposed. The direct loss of CF₃SO₃ from the molecular ion of 3,5-(diisopropyl)-phenyl-, 3,5-(dicyclopropyl)phenyl- and 3,5-di(α-methylcyclopropyl)-phenyl-methanesulfonate, and further observations on the fragmentation processes of these compounds are consistent with M.O. calculations on the ‘through bond’ stabilization of the [Ar]+ σ state by meta electron donor substituents.
