Case-study evaluations of the acoustical designs of renovated university classrooms

The acoustical characteristics of 14 university classrooms at the University of British Columbia were measured before and after renovation—seven of these are discussed in detail here. From these measurements, and theoretical considerations, values of quantities used to assess each classroom configuration were predicted, and used to evaluate renovation quality. Information on each renovation was determined with the help of the university campus-planning office and/or the project acoustical consultant. These were related to the evaluation results in order to determine the relationship between design and acoustical quality. The criteria focused on the quality of verbal communication in the classrooms. Room-average Speech Intelligibility (SI) and its physical correlate, Speech Transmission Index (STI), were used to quantify verbal-communication quality. A simplified STI-calculation procedure was applied. The results indicate that some renovations were beneficial, others were not. Verbal-communication quality varied from ‘poor’ to ‘good’. The effect of a renovation depends on a complex interplay between changes in the reverberation and changes in the signal-to-noise level difference, as affected by sound absorption and the source outputs. Renovations which reduce noise are beneficial unless signal-to-noise level differences remain optimal. Renovations often put too much emphasis on adding sound absorption to control reverberation, at the expense of lower speech levels, particularly at the backs of classrooms. The absorption and noise contributed by room occupants has apparently often been neglected.

Palladium-catalysed three component coupling of an alkenylbromide, isonitrile and an amine or alkoxide/phenoxide affords α,β-unsaturated-amidines and -imidates.     

Stable Ergodicity and Frame Flows

In this note we show that all diffeomorphisms close enough to the time-one map of the frame flow on certain negatively curved manifolds are ergodic. As a simple corollary we deduce that the frame flows are ergodic for all compact manifolds with curvature pinched sufficiently close to –1, thus providing results in the case of manifolds of dimension 7 or 8 which were missing from the results of Brin and Karcher.     

On a compromise social choice correspondence

This paper analyzes the compromise social choice correspondence derived from the τ-value of digraph games. Monotonicity of this correspondence is shown. A connection between several properties of social choice correspondences based on game theoretical solutions and game theoretical properties of the underlying solutions is given. Applications to several game theoretic solutions are provided.     

Experimental design and the optimization of a polymer supported palladium complex for use in the Heck reaction

Optimization of the Heck reaction of 4-bromoacetophenone with styrene by a polymer supported, sulfur-containing palladacycle, varying 6 factors at a total of 28 different levels, corresponding to 5760 different possibilities was undertaken. Conversion improved from 34%, with large observable leaching to 88% with no leaching. This was accomplished using a Design of Experiments approach facilitated by the Statistical Design Package, MODDE 7.0^TM.     

Implementation of an integrated glucose POCT system

In response to a change of the Belgian National Directives whereby hospital laboratories became responsible for all point-of-care testing (POCT) performed within hospital walls a standardized and automated POC glucose-testing system was implemented in our hospital. The system consists of 50 AccuCheck Inform instruments (Roche Diagnostics, Vilvoorde, Belgium), 50 docking stations, a DataCare Server, and connections to the medical laboratory information system (MOLIS, Sysmex, Barchon, Belgium) and to the hospital information system. Implementation involved many parties and extensive preparation and communication. Key issues were bar-coded patient and user identification, training, and responsibilities. One year after the hospital wide implementation of this system the quality of POC glucose testing has significantly increased, thereby improving patient safety. This study describes a stepwise change over involving the medical laboratory and with a focus on hands-on quality.Presented at the ninth conference on Quality in the Spotlight, 18–19 March 2004, Antwerp, Belgium.     

Distribution results for lattices in SL(2,ℚ p )

In this paper we study the ergodic properties of the linear action of lattices Γ of SL(2,ℚ_p) on ℚ_p × ℚ_p and distribution results for orbits of Γ. Following Serre, one can define a “geodesic flow” for an associated tree (actually associated to GL(2,ℚ_p)). The approach we use is based on an extension of this approach to “frame flows” which are a natural compact group extension of the geodesic flow.     

The Livsic Cocycle Equation for Compact Lie Group Extensions of Hyperbolic Systems

In this article we extend well-known results of Livsic on theregularity of measurable solutions to the cocycle equation.Livsic proved a regularity result for real valued cocycles,but for compact Lie group valued cocycles his result was restrictedto coboundaries (that is, trivial or constant cocycles). Inthis article we prove the complete result. We present several useful applications of these results.
