In search of the ηc

We argue that the X(2.88) detected in π^?p → γγ + n at 40 GeV/c cannot be the η_c. We discuss the possibility that a qq?cc? state is produced there, probably the same state discovered in radiative decay of the J/ψ. Only at much higher energies is the η_c expected to dominate over qq?cc? in the π^?p interaction. We also discuss coherent photoproduction and find that four quark state production would dominate over η_c.     

Integral equation formulation for buoyancy-driven convection problems

An integral equation formulation for buoyancy-driven convection problems is developed and illustrated. Buoyancy-driven convection in a bounded cylindrical geometry with a free surface is studied for a range of aspect ratios and Nusselt numbers. The critical Rayleigh number, the nature of the cellular motion, and the heat transfer enhancement are computed using linear theory. Green's functions are used to convert the linear problem into linear Fredholm integral equations. Theorems are proved which establish the properties of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear integral operator which appears in these equations.     

Compact,convex sets in R n and a new banach lattice. II.- Application: An approximation problem.

We develop a calculus structure in the Banach lattice introduced in a preceding paper, having in mind an approximation problem appearing in non-smooth optimization. We show that the essential results depend as much on the order structure as on the analytical one.     

Recent research using the Oxford electron beam ion trap

The presence of the σ-phase in Fe-Cr alloys (eg. Stainless steel) is important in industrial applications and from an academic point of view. The presence of the σ-phase in these alloys drastically affects their mechanical properties and their resistance to various corrosive media. In the present investigation Fe-Cr alloys containing different amounts of Mo were prepared and the transformation to the σ-phase was carried out by isothermally annealing the samples for various periods in an argon atmosphere. It will be shown that the presence of Mo has a dramatic accelerating effect on the rate of the σ-phase formation in these alloys. Spectrum of H218O in the 2900 to 3400 cm−1 region

Measurements of line center positions of H₂¹⁸O in the 2900 to 3400 cm^?1 region have been made at high resolution. This region contains absorptions of the (020) band and P-branch absorptions of the (100) and (001) bands of H₂¹⁸O. Values of the energy levels of the (020) state were determined in which ground state energy levels derived by Fraley, Rao, and Jones [J. Mol. Spectrosc.29, 312 (1969)] and Williamson, Rao, and Jones [J. Mol. Spectrosc.40, 372 (1971)] were used in the analysis. A new set of ground state levels was obtained by an iterative procedure.
