Phase diagrams of lyotropic cholesteric fluids

Experimental investigations of lyotropic cholesterics fluids are presented which show that changes in the shape anisotropy and chirality of the micellar population determine the topology of the temperature-concentration phase diagrams. For given amounts of the substances which induce the chirality and modify the shape anisotropy of the micelles, two distinct biaxial cholesteric phases are disclosed in the phase diagrams. This is interpreted in the framework of the catastrophe theory of phase transitions.     

MP3 player listening sound pressure levels among 10 to 17 year old students

Using a manikin, equivalent free-field sound pressure level measurements were made from the portable digital audio players of 219 subjects, aged 10 to 17 years (93 males) at their typical and "worst-case" volume levels. Measurements were made in different classrooms with background sound pressure levels between 40 and 52 dBA. After correction for the transfer function of the ear, the median equivalent free field sound pressure levels and interquartile ranges (IQR) at typical and worst-case volume settings were 68 dBA (IQR?=?15) and 76 dBA (IQR?=?19), respectively. Self-reported mean daily use ranged from 0.014 to 12 h. When typical sound pressure levels were considered in combination with the average daily duration of use, the median noise exposure level, Lex, was 56 dBA (IQR?=?18) and 3.2% of subjects were estimated to exceed the most protective occupational noise exposure level limit in Canada, i.e., 85 dBA Lex. Under worst-case listening conditions, 77.6% of the sample was estimated to listen to their device at combinations of sound pressure levels and average daily durations for which there is no known risk of permanent noise-induced hearing loss, i.e.,?≤ 75 dBA Lex. Sources and magnitudes of measurement uncertainties are also discussed.     

Effect of counterion structure on rates and diastereoselectivities in α,β-unsaturated iminium-ion Diels-Alder reactions

The use of cyclic α,β-unsaturated iminium-ion dienophiles is documented in two highly diastereoselective Diels-Alder (DA) reactions. The dienophilic counterion was found to have a significant effect on reactivity.     

Audiometric thresholds among a Canadian sample of 10 to 17 year old students

A total of 237 students, 10 to 17 years of age, from 14 schools underwent hearing evaluations. Otoscopic examination, tympanometry and air-conduction pure tone audiometry was conducted at low (0.5, 1, 2 kHz) and high (4 and 8 kHz) frequencies. In all schools, hearing thresholds were measured with headphones in a portable audiometric booth. Socio-demographic information from students and their parents were collected using questionnaires. Overall, the prevalence of any hearing loss greater than 15 dB was 22.3% for low or high frequency pure tone averages. Self-reported symptoms of hearing loss, such as tinnitus, difficulty following a conversation with background noise, and having to turn up the TV/radio more than in the past, were associated with audiometric thresholds, most notably at 4 kHz. These study findings are among the first to provide a detailed characterization of hearing status in a sample of youth in a Canadian demographic.     

Lie ideals in triangular operator algebras

We study Lie ideals in two classes of triangular operator algebras: nest algebras and triangular UHF algebras. Our main results show that if is a closed Lie ideal of the triangular operator algebra , then there exist a closed associative ideal and a closed subalgebra of the diagonal so that .

     

Palladium-catalyzed synthesis of functionalized tetraarylphosphonium salts

An efficient method to synthesize functionalized tetraarylphosphonium salts is described. This palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction between aryl iodides, bromides, or triflates and triphenylphosphine generates phosphonium salts in high yields. The coupling is compatible with a variety of functional groups such as alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, phenols, and amides.     

Stereoselective formation of carbon-carbon bonds via SN2-displacement: synthesis of substituted cycloalkyl[b]indoles

A general asymmetric synthesis of substituted cycloalkyl[b]indoles has been accomplished. The key features of this approach are (1) the utilization of a Japp-Klingemann condensation/Fischer cyclization to prepare cycloalkyl[b]indolones, (2) the asymmetric borane reduction of these heterocyclic ketones with (S)-OAB to obtain enantiomerically pure alcohols, and (3) the stereoselective S(N)2-displacement of these indole alcohol substrates with a carbon nucleophile under Mitsunobu conditions to set the C1 or C3 tertiary carbon stereocenter. The use of trimethylphosphine (PMe3) and bis(2,2,2-trichloroethyl) azodicarboxylate (TCEAD) was found to have an effect on the Mitsunobu dehydrative alkylation.
