Investigation of efflorescence of inorganic aerosols using fluorescence spectroscopy

The phase transition is one of the most fundamental phenomena affecting the physical and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols. Efflorescence, in particular, is not well understood, partly because the molecular interactions between the solute and water molecules of saturated or supersaturated solution droplets have not been well characterized. Recently, we developed a technique that combines the use of an electrodynamic balance and a fluorescence dye, 8-hydroxyl-1,3,6-pyrenetrisulfonate (pyranine), to study the distributions of solvated and free water in aqueous droplets (Choi, M. Y.; Chan, C. K.; Zhang, Y. H. J. Phys. Chem. A 2004, 108, 1133). We found that the equality of the amounts of solvated and free water is a necessary but not sufficient condition for efflorescence. For efflorescing compounds such as Na2SO4, (NH4)2SO4, and a mixture of NaCl and Na2SO4, the amount of free water decreases, while that of solvated water is roughly constant in bulk measurements and decreases less dramatically than that of free water in single-particle measurements as the relative humidity (RH) decreases. Efflorescence of the supersaturated droplets of these solutions occurs when the amounts of free and solvated water are equal, which is consistent with our previous observation for NaCl. For nonefflorescing compounds in single-particle levitation experiments such as MgSO4 and Mg(NO3)2, the amounts of free and solvated water are equal at a water-to-solute molar ratio of about 6, at which spectral changes due to the formation of contact ion pairs between magnesium and the anions occur as shown by Raman spectroscopy. Fluorescence imaging shows that the droplets of diluted Mg(NO3)2 (at 80% RH) and MgSO4 are homogeneous but those of NaCl, Na2SO4, (NH4)2SO4, and supersaturated Mg(NO3)2 (at 10% RH) are heterogeneous in terms of the solvated-to-free water distribution. The solvated-to-free water ratios in NaCl, Na2SO4, and (NH4)2SO4 droplets are higher in the outer regions by about half a radius deep than at the center of the droplets.     

Tasumatrols P – T,Five New Taxoids from Taxus sumatrana

The phytochemical investigation of the more polar fractions from the leaves and twigs of Taxus sumatrana (Taxaceae) afforded five new taxane diterpene esters, tasumatrols P–T ( 1 – 5 ) possessing an 11(15→1),11(10→9)‐diabeotaxane skeleton. Compounds 1, 4 , and 5 contain an α‐hydroxy group at C(14), while 3 has no OH group at either C(13) or C(14). Compound 2 is a natural 4,5‐acetonide derivative, while 4 has an unusual spiro‐connected 2‐hydroxy‐2‐phenyl‐1,3‐dioxolane ring. Ten known taxoids, were also isolated in the course of the chromatographic fractionation. Five additional new O‐acetyl derivatives 3a, 4a, 4b, 5a , and 5b were prepared from the taxanes 3 – 5 . The structures of all new compounds were established on the basis of their spectroscopic analyses. Compound 1 showed mild cytotoxic activity against human Hela and Daoy tumor cells.     

Vacuum balance and related studies of green and red rusts

Green and red rusts are formed when iron is partially or completely oxidised. Analogues of the rusts may be precipitated from iron(II) and iron (III) salt solutions treated with alkali under reducing or oxidising conditions. Variations in surface area and porosity have been investigated by gravimetric nitrogen gas sorption, using vacuum microbalance techniques.Freshly-precipitated red rusts, hydrous iron (III) oxide, have surface areas of about 200–400 m²g^?1. When they are added to iron (II) hydroxide suspensions kept at pH 7, the green Fe (II)-Fe (III) rusts formed have lower surface areas of about 40–100 m²g^?1, depending on the initial iron(II) sulphate concentrations.     

硼酸溶液中氯柱硼镁石的溶解及相转化动力学

对氯柱硼镁石（2MgO•2B2O3•MgCl2•14H2O）在4.5％H3BO3水溶液40 ℃的溶解及相转化过程进行了动力学研究.对不同时间取出的液相的化学分析及不同阶段分离固相的鉴定结果表明,该复盐在溶解阶段出现与前所报导不同的同步溶解，最终产物是库水硼镁石（2MgO•3B2O3•15H2O）.提出了库水硼镁石的形成条件和溶解及相转化动力学机理，利用单纯形优化法配合Runge-Kutta微分方程组数值解法对实验数据进行处理，给出了转化结晶动力学方程.

Biomimetic condensation copolyesters

Copolyterephthalates of bis(4-hydroxy-3-methylphenyl)-2,2-propane and N-methyldiethanolamine and their hydrochloric salts of various compositions and microstructures have been prepared by the copolycondensation of hydrophilic and hydrophobic comonomers. It has been shown that the transition from random proteinlike structures to the block structures makes it possible to preserve biomimetic properties of the copolymers at a smaller content of charged units in macromolecules. The ability of charged polymers to survive in aqueous solutions has been used for the synthesis of copolyterephthalate of N-bis(hydroxyethyl)tetradecylmethylammonium bromide and N-methyldiethanolamine demonstrating fungicidal activity.     

Controllable self-assembly of parallel gold nanorod clusters by DNA origami

We demonstrate the self-assembly of three types of parallel gold nanorod clusters using a rod-like DNA origami as the template.     

Microwave-prompted Rapid and Efficient Synthesis of Diacyl Thiosemicarbazides and Semicarbazides in Solvent and Catalyst Free Condition

Eighteen 1-aroyl-4-（2-iodobenzoyl）thiosemicarbazides and corresponding semicarbazides were synthesized in excellent yield under microwave irradiation in solvent and catalyst free condition.
