Synthesis and properties of fluorine tail-terminated cyanobiphenyls and terphenyls for chemoresponsive liquid crystals

ABSTRACT

A series of fluorine tail-terminated alkoxy and alkyl cyanobiphenyl compounds and some cyano-p-terphenyl derivatives were synthesised and mesogenic properties described. Comparison with the non-fluorinated K series and M series indicates that the terminal fluorine atom generally decreases the transition temperatures and, more interestingly, depresses the formation of a smectic phase. Several binary LC mixtures formed by the fluorine tail-terminated compounds were found exhibiting promising room temperature nematic phases with wide ranges. The mixture F7OCB and F8OCB shows homeotropic ordering at the metal salts-decorated surfaces and planar ordering at the free surface, which may have potential application in designing a more sensitive and faster LC system to targeted analytes.     

Bis{2,6‐bis[3‐(2,4,6‐trimethylphenyl)pyrazol‐1‐yl‐κN2]pyridine‐κN}zinc(II) diperchlorate bis(nitromethane) solvate

The title compound, [Zn(C₂₉H₂₉N₅)₂](ClO₄)₂·2CH₃NO₂, contains a Zn^II ion showing only small deviations from local D_2d symmetry. The lower rhombicity exhibited by this complex compared with that of its Cu^II congener suggests that the highly rhombic stereochemistry exhibited by the latter is largely imposed by the stereoelectronic preferences of the Cu^II ion.     

Designing and using professional development resources for inquiry-based learning

This paper describes an attempt to design, analyse and refine professional development (PD) resources that encourage the implementation of inquiry-based learning (IBL). We describe the iterative development of the resources in England with over 100 mathematics teachers from secondary, tertiary and adult education and then analyse the impact these resources had on teachers’ beliefs and practices and the issues arising. This evaluation revealed that teachers had moved away from transmission-based orientations, encouraged by the use of less structured tasks and sample lesson plans, but some found it difficult to adopt IBL pedagogies. The most significant issues for teachers may be summarised as: confusing IBL with ‘discovery’ learning; developing and managing collaborative cultures within the classroom; and planning lessons that adapt to the emerging needs of learners.     

A notable conversion of a thiolacetate to its corresponding sulfonyl chloride

A direct conversion of a thiolacetate to its corresponding sulfonyl chloride in the presence of acid and base sensitive functional groups is described.     

Stretching polymer chains

This paper is based on a presentation given at the de Gennes discussion meeting held at Chamonix in February 2009. The paper gives a personal review of the way developments relating to the stretching of polymer chains has taken place over the last 40 years. de Gennes was very influential in relation to chain dynamics concepts at the University of Bristol, where many pioneering concepts relating to chain stretching were developed by the late Sir Charles Frank and Andrew Keller. The paper reviews basic concepts on extensional rheology, droplet deformation, chain extension from extensional flow and the achievement of high chain extension for high-modulus polyethylene. The paper also reviews recent developments concerning the influence of chain stretching on polymer melt processing.     

Finite Linear Spaces II

Batten and Beutelspacher have characterized Finite Linear Spaces with lines of size n,n + 1 and n + 2, and with v (n + 1)²for n 22, and some of the cases for smaller n. In this article, using the structuredapproach we presented in our earlier article [8], we complete this characterization for smalln.     

A cyclic hexacopper(II) fluoro complex that encapsulates two fluoride anions

The complex [[Cu3(HpztBu)4(mu-pztBu)2(mu-F)2(mu 3-F)]2]F2 (HpztBu = 3[5]-tert-butylpyrazole) has a cyclic, C2v-symmetric hexacopper core. The two non-coordinated F- anions are encapsulated within cavities formed by three HpztBu ligands.     

Search for the scalar top quark in pp collisions at square root[s] = 1.8 TeV

We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, t-->b chi+1 and t-->blnu, no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ( t ), chargino ( chi+1), and sneutrino ( nu) masses.     

Measurement of B --> K*gamma branching fractions and charge asymmetries

The branching fractions of the exclusive decays B0-->K(*0)gamma and B+-->K(*+)gamma are measured from a sample of (22.74+/-0.36)x10(6) BB decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. We find B (B0-->K(*0)gamma) = [4.23+/-0.40(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5), B(B+-->K(*+)gamma) = [3.83+/-0.62(stat)+/-0.22(syst)]x10(-5) and constrain the CP-violating charge asymmetry to be -0.170K(*)gamma)<0.082 at 90% C.L.
