Reactions of hydropolysilanes with alcohols catalysed by tris(triphenylphosphine)chlororhodium

[RhCl(PPh₃)₃] is a very effective catalyst for the cleavage of Si-Si bonds by alcohols.     

Classifying thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules

Various classification theorems of thick subcategories of a triangulated category have been obtained in many areas of mathematics. In this paper, as a higher-dimensional version of the classification theorem of thick subcategories of the stable category of finitely generated representations of a finite p-group due to Benson, Carlson and Rickard, we consider classifying thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein local ring. The main result of this paper yields a complete classification of the thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a local hypersurface in terms of specialization-closed subsets of the prime ideal spectrum of the ring which are contained in its singular locus.

Stereoselective total synthesis of (±)-cubitene, a diterpene isolated from termite soldiers, and its stereisomer has been achieved utilizing the anion-induced intramolecular cyclization.     

Fusion-fission of light nuclear systems

Considerable interest has been devoted to fusion reactions between light heavy ions specially between weakly bound ones, due to the anomalous decrease of the fusion cross sections when compared to the total reaction cross section in the energy region around the barrier [1–4]. While the exact nature of the process responsible for the fusion cross section limitation at barrier energies is still unclear, this study shows an inhibition of the yield as the system mass decreases, resulting from the progressive increase of the barrier height and decrease of the effective barrier radius [3]. Furthermore, extensive efforts have been made recently in the study of energy-damped binary yields from light heavy-ion collisions [2,4]. Based on the substantial amount of data accumulated so far, it is now generally accepted and supported by the transition state model [4], that the observed yields arise mostly from a fusion-fission process. Data on complete fusion, fusion-fission and ‘elastic fission’ for the ⁹Be, ^10,11B+^10,11B; ^16,17,18O + ^10,11B; ¹⁹F+¹²C; ^6,7Li+⁹Be, ¹²C reactions among others, are presented. For the loosely bound nuclei it was found that the severe fusion cross section limitation is due to a low survival probability of the weakly bound nuclei until the instant of the collision [1].     

Selective oxidation of hydroxy groups of phenylthio and phenylseleno alcohols

Various kinds of alcohols bearing phenylthio or phenylseleno moiety were converted into the corresponding carbonyl compounds in good to excellent yields by treating with dimesityl diselenide and $\text{tert}$-butyl hydroperoxide.     

Retardation of discoloration of poly(vinyl chloride) and decolorization of discolored poly(vinyl chloride) with diimide

Retardation of discoloration of poly(vinyl chloride) with diimide was studied in dimethylformamide at 130°C. with the use of p-toluenesulfonylhydrazide (PSH) as a source of diimide. A process was proposed that involved prolonging the induction periods of discoloration by inhibiting the development of conjugated polyene structure. The optimum proportion of PSH was one fourth of the poly(vinyl chloride), the best results. Furthermore, poly(vinyl chloride) discolored by thermal degradation in o-dichlorobenzene or gamma-ray irradiation under vacuum was decolorized in solution at 130°C. by addition of PSH. The decolorized poly(vinyl chloride) thus obtained was thermally stable compared with that obtained by oxidative methods.     

Photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms

We report the photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms in an optical trap. We observed more than 90 photoassociation resonances of vibrational levels in the (1)Sigma(+)(u) state, including 80 consecutive series, up to 490 GHz detuning with respect to the atomic resonance. From the resonance frequencies we derived the atomic radiative lifetime of the (6s6p) 1P1 state to be 5.464+/-0.005 ns, which is about 2 orders of magnitude improvement over previous results. We also observed line broadening of resonances, which is ascribed to the predissociation to the triplet states, and estimated the transition probability to be 0.2. Furthermore, we observed the decrease of the photoassociation signal intensity, from which the scattering length is estimated to be equal to or less than 3 nm.     

Mass spectrometric studies on gibberellins

Based on the element maps of twenty-two gibberellin methyl esters fragmentations are discussed, which are characteristic of the common structural features as well as structural modification in gibberellin homologues.
