The accuracy of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate measured by PIV is studied. The critical issue for PIV-based dissipation measurements is the strong dependency on the spatial resolution, Δx, as reported by Saarenrinne and Piirto (Exp Fluids Suppl:S300–S307, 2000). When the PIV spacing is larger than the Kolmogorov scale, η, the dissipation is underestimated because the small scale fluctuations are filtered. For the case of Δx smaller than the Kolmogorov scale, the error rapidly increases due to noise. We introduce a correction method to eliminate the dominant error for the small Δx case. The correction method is validated by using a novel PIV benchmark, random Oseen vortices synthetic image test (ROST), in which quasi-turbulence is generated by randomly superposing multiple Oseen vortices. The error of the measured dissipation can be more than 1,000% of the analytical dissipation for the small Δx case, while the dissipation rate is underestimated for the large Δx case. Though the correction method does not correct the underestimate due to the low resolution, the dissipation was accurately obtained within a few percent of the true value by using the correction method for the optimal resolution of η/10 < Δx < η/2.  相似文献

The effects of three-dimensionality on the turbulence producing near-wall structures over a rotating disk are examined using hydrogen bubble visualization. Laser Doppler anemometry measurements of the tangential and radial velocities indicate the flow to resemble that of an infinite disk. It was found that the crossflow acts to reduce vertical mixing during the turbulence ejection events, thus reducing the efficiency of the boundary layer in producing shear stress.This research has been sponsored by the Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences through Grants DE-FG03-86ER13608 and DE-FG03-93ER12309.  相似文献

We present an experimental study of a supersonic nozzle with supersonic iodine injection. This nozzle simulates Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) flow conditions with non-reacting, cold flows. During the experiments, we used a laser sheet near 565 nm to excite fluorescence in iodine, which we imaged with an intensified and gated CCD camera. We captured streamwise and semi-spanwise (oblique-view) images, with fluorescence revealing the material injected into the flow. We identified the flow structures in the images, and produced quantitative characterizations of the flow morphology and of the mixing between the primary and injected flow. We considered four injection scenarios. The first scenario includes a single injector positioned downstream of the nozzle throat. To enhance the mixing between the flows, trip jets are placed in the wake of the single jet. The sonic trip jets, significantly smaller than the primary supersonic iodine jet, are intended to destabilize the counter-rotating vortex pair (CRVP) of the primary jet. We compare three different trip jet configurations for their ability to enhance mixing between the oxygen and iodine flows.  相似文献

A new technique, full neutrino momentum reconstruction, is used to set limits on the admixture of heavy neutrinos into the electron neutrino. We measure coincidences between nuclear recoils and positrons from the beta decay of trapped radioactive atoms and deduce the neutrino momentum. A search for peaks in the reconstructed recoil time-of-flight spectrum as a function of positron energy is performed. The admixture upper limits range from 4 x 10(-3) to 2 x 10(-2) and are the best direct limits for neutrinos (as opposed to antineutrinos) for the mass region of 0.7 to 3.5 MeV.  相似文献

Abstract— The initial oxygenation or peroxidation of arachidonic acid seems to be an essential step for the synthesis of cyclic endoperoxides and prostaglandins. There has been some evidence and considerable interest in the role of superoxide anion, hydroxyl radicals or singlet oxygen as a source of oxygen in the formation of the active species (free radicals). A test capable of detecting active intermediates of lipid peroxidation and useful for studying the role of free radicals has been developed. The test resulted from the discovery that vitamin E markedly enhanced the reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) during arachidonic acid peroxidation. Intact platelets, microsomes, sheep vesicular gland enzymes or peroxidases could provide essential enzyme activity. NBT and vitamin E when added to platelet microsomes inhibited the conversion of 14C arachidonic acid to HETE, HHT and thromboxanes. The combination also inhibited aggregation of platelets stimulated by collagen, thrombin, ADP and epinephrine. Prolonged incubation with these agents at the highest concentrations used in the study caused no change in morphology and had no deleterious effect on platelet levels of adenine nucleotides and serotonin. Results of our preliminary studies suggest that NBT and vitamin E can detect intermediates of lipid peroxidation, inhibit the conversion of arachidonic acid, prevent platelet aggregation and the release reaction without damaging the platelets morphologically or biochemically. As both the agents are scavengers of free radicals and in combination exert synergistic effects, the test system may serve as a probe in various free radical mediated events and may offer some degree of protection against free radical mediated pathological processes.  相似文献
