The Splitter Theorem states that, if N is a 3-connected proper minor of a 3-connected matroid M such that, if N is a wheel or whirl then M has no larger wheel or whirl, respectively, then there is a sequence M 0, . . . , M n of 3-connected matroids with ${M_0 \cong N}$ , M n = M and for ${i \in \{1, \ldots , n}\}$ , M i is a single-element extension or coextension of M i?1. Observe that there is no condition on how many extensions may occur before a coextension must occur. We give a strengthening of the Splitter Theorem, as a result of which we can obtain, up to isomorphism, M starting with N and at each step doing a 3-connected single-element extension or coextension, such that at most two consecutive single-element extensions occur in the sequence (unless the rank of thematroids involved is r(M)). Moreover, if two consecutive single-element extensions by elements {e, f} are followed by a coextension by element g, then {e, f , g} form a triad in the resulting matroid. 相似文献

Oxley has conjectured that for k≥4, if a matroid M has a k-element set that is the intersection of a circuit and a cocircuit, then M has a (k−2)-element set that is the intersection of a circuit and a cocircuit. In this paper we prove a stronger version of this conjecture
for regular matroids. We also show that the stronger result does not hold for binary matroids.

We analyse the evolution of a two-stage chemical reaction betweentwo neighbouring plumes of reactants. Under the assumption thatthe plumes are approximately Gaussian we derive a system ofordinary differential equations for the total amount, the centroidand the variance of each reactant. We compare the solution ofthese equations with full numerical simulation of the reaction.Excellent agreement is obtained, with solution of the near-Gaussianmodel requiring considerably less computational effort thanthe full simulations. Of key importance is the yield of thereaction, and we discuss this feature in particular. 相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of acoustic scattering from the centrebody of an advanced open rotor engine. The physical mechanisms governing the scattering process are investigated and formulae for predicting noise levels are presented. It is found that centrebody scattering has a negligible effect on rotor-alone tones produced by a subsonic rotor, however, the scattering effect can be significant for rotor-alone tones produced by a supersonic rotor and certain rotor–rotor interaction tones. The paper concludes with an analysis which shows that the centrebody scattered field may be significantly reduced by applying an acoustic liner to the centrebody surface. 相似文献
