2‐[3‐Furyl­(hydroxy)­methyl]‐2,3‐di­methyl­cyclo­hexanone

In the mol­ecule of the title compound, C₁₃H₁₈O₃, there is a syn relationship between the two vicinal methyl groups. The six‐membered ring adopts a chair conformation, with one equatorial and two axial groups, and the furyl group is almost parallel to the ketone group. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds [O—H?O=C 2.814 (3) Å] form chains along [100].     

Borane-Tetrahydrofuran as a Useful Reagent in the N-Monoalkylation of Amines and Aminoalcohols by Carbonyl Compounds

A new procedure for the high-yield N-monoalkylation of primary aromatic and aliphatic amines is described.     

Enantioselective transport by a steroidal guanidinium receptor

The cationic steroidal receptors 9 and 11 have been synthesized from cholic acid 3. Receptor 9 extracts N-acetyl-alpha-amino acids from aqueous media into chloroform with enantioselectivities (L:D) of 7-10:1. The lipophilic variant 11 has been employed for the enantioselective transport of N-acetylphenylalanine, a) through dichloromethane (DCM) and dichloroethane (DCE) bulk liquid membranes (U-tube apparatus), and b) through 2.5% (v/v) octanol/hexane via hollow fibre membrane contactors. Significant enantioselectivities and multiple turnovers were observed for both types of apparatus.     

Tetraalkynyl calix[4]arenes with advanced NLO properties

Rigid, highly conjugated tetraalkynyl-calix[4]arenes synthesised via Sonogashira coupling give rise to improved second-order hyperpolarizability values as determined by hyper-Rayleigh scattering--a technique that in addition to X-ray crystallography also allows for the conformational analysis of the calixarene structures in solution.     

Synthesis and conformational studies on hexa-O-alkyl p-unsubstituted calix[6]arenes

[structure: see text] In this article we describe the selective O-benzylation of para-unsubstituted calix[6]arene 1 in rings 1 and 4 (2a-c) and the subsequent alkylation of phenol groups with alpha-haloesters (methyl esters 3a, 3c, and 3e; tert-butyl esters 3b, 3d, and 3f) to determine the effect of these groups on their conformational behavior. 2D NMR studies at 188 K reveal that compounds 2a-c, 3b, 3d, and 3f are less flexible, showing a 1,2,3-alternate conformation. The same conformation has been observed in the solid state.     

Solid-state water electrolysis with an alkaline membrane

We report high-performance, durable alkaline membrane water electrolysis in a solid-state cell. An anion exchange membrane (AEM) and catalyst layer ionomer for hydroxide ion conduction were used without the addition of liquid electrolyte. At 50 °C, an AEM electrolysis cell using iridium oxide as the anode catalyst and Pt black as the cathode catalyst exhibited a current density of 399 mA/cm(2) at 1.80 V. We found that the durability of the AEM-based electrolysis cell could be improved by incorporating a highly durable ionomer in the catalyst layer and optimizing the water feed configuration. We demonstrated an AEM-based electrolysis cell with a lifetime of >535 h. These first-time results of water electrolysis in a solid-state membrane cell are promising for low-cost, scalable hydrogen production.     

Digital Volume Correlation: Review of Progress and Challenges

3D imaging has become popular for analyzing material microstructures. When time lapse series of 3D pictures are acquired during a single experiment, it is possible to measure displacement fields via digital volume correlation (DVC), thereby leading to 4D results. Such 4D analyses have been performed for almost two decades. The present paper aims at reviewing the achievements of and challenges faced by such measurement technique. Ex-situ and in-situ experiments are discussed. A general and unified DVC framework is introduced. Various sources of measurement bias and uncertainties are analyzed. The current challenges are studied and some propositions are given to address them.     

Inclusion relations for the spaces L(ℝ), \mathcal{H}\mathcal{K} (ℝ) ∩ \mathcal{B}\mathcal{V} (ℝ), and L 2(ℝ)

The inclusion relations for the spaces $ \mathcal{H}\mathcal{K} $ (I), L(I), $ \mathcal{H}\mathcal{K} $ (I) ∩ $ \mathcal{B}\mathcal{V} $ (I), and L ²(I) are found. On unbounded intervals, functions in $ \mathcal{H}\mathcal{K} $ (I) ∩ $ \mathcal{B}\mathcal{V} $ (I) need not be Lebesgue integrable.
