The widespread use of powerful, low-frequency air-gun pulses for seismic seabed exploration has raised concern about their potential negative effects on marine wildlife. Here, we quantify the sound exposure levels recorded on acoustic tags attached to eight sperm whales at ranges between 1.4 and 12.6 km from controlled air-gun array sources operated in the Gulf of Mexico. Due to multipath propagation, the animals were exposed to multiple sound pulses during each firing of the array with received levels of analyzed pulses falling between 131-167 dB re. 1 microPa (pp) [111-147 dB re. 1 microPa (rms) and 100-135 dB re. 1 microPa2 s] after compensation for hearing sensitivity using the M-weighting. Received levels varied widely with range and depth of the exposed animal precluding reliable estimation of exposure zones based on simple geometric spreading laws. When whales were close to the surface, the first arrivals of air-gun pulses contained most energy between 0.3 and 3 kHz, a frequency range well beyond the normal frequencies of interest in seismic exploration. Therefore air-gun arrays can generate significant sound energy at frequencies many octaves higher than the frequencies of interest for seismic exploration, which increases concern of the potential impact on odontocetes with poor low frequency hearing. 相似文献

Practical approximation schemes for calculating partition functions of torsional modes are tested against accurate quantum mechanical results for H(2)O(2) and six isotopically substituted hydrogen peroxides. The schemes are classified on the basis of the type and amount of information that is required. First, approximate one-dimensional hindered-rotator partition functions are benchmarked against exact one-dimensional torsion results obtained by eigenvalue summation. The approximate one-dimensional methods tested in this stage include schemes that only require the equilibrium geometries and frequencies, schemes that also require the barrier heights of internal rotation, and schemes that require the whole one-dimensional torsional potential. Then, three classes of approximate full-dimensional vibrational-rotational partition functions are calculated and are compared with the accurate full-dimensional path integral partition functions. These three classes are (1) separable approximations combining harmonic oscillator-rigid rotator models with the one-dimensional torsion schemes, (2) almost-separable approximations in which the nonseparable zero-point energy is used to correct the separable approximations, and (3) improved nonseparable Pitzer-Gwinn-type methods in which approaches of type 1 are used as reference methods in the Pitzer-Gwinn approach. The effectiveness of these methods for the calculation of isotope effects is also studied. Dispersions of various concentrations (15-35%) were prepared in silicone oils of vastly different viscosities (40, 1000, 10,000, and 30,000 mPa s) and compressed to high values of stress while under an electric field of 2 kV/mm. A purpose of this study was to observe the effect of compression and E field simultaneously on these dispersions and assess predictions of most common and relevant theories. As shown, static stresses of over 1000 kPa could readily be obtained although the data presented here were held below 300 kPa to protect the load cell and equipment. The results are compared to and discussed in terms of a power law fit for stress vs gap since most theories predict such a dependence. The PL exponents fall around 3 ranges: (-2), (-3), and much less than (-3). The PL coefficients however reflect in systematic way the viscosities of the dispersing oils. A variety of localization methods with normal mode theory have been established for localizing low frequency (below a few hundred Hz), broadband signals in a shallow water environment. Gauss-Markov inverse theory is employed in this paper to derive an adaptive normal mode back-propagation approach. Joining with the maximum a posteriori mode filter, this approach is capable of separating signals from noisy data so that the back-propagation will not have significant influence from the noise. Numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the robustness and accuracy of the approach, along with comparisons to other methods. Applications to real data collected at the edge of the continental shelf off New Jersey, USA are presented, and the effects of water column fluctuations caused by nonlinear internal waves and shelfbreak front variability are discussed. 相似文献

Green chemistry places an emphasis on safer chemicals, waste reduction, and efficiency. Processes should be optimized with green chemistry at the forefront of decision making, embedded into research at the earliest stage. To assist in this endeavor, we present a spreadsheet that can be used to interpret reaction kinetics via Variable Time Normalization Analysis (VTNA), understand solvent effects with linear solvation energy relationships (LSER), and calculate solvent greenness. With this information, new reaction conditions can be explored in silico, calculating product conversions and green chemistry metrics prior to experiments. The application of this tool was validated with literature case studies. Reaction performance was predicted and then confirmed experimentally for examples of aza-Michael addition, Michael addition, and an amidation. The combined analytical package presented herein permits a thorough examination of chemical reactions, so that the variables that control reaction chemistry can be understood, optimized, and made greener for research and education purposes. 相似文献
