The variability of composition of the volatile fraction of olive oil

Aroma of olive oil is a very complex mixture of components. Analysis of head space of a series of virgin olive oil samples indicate a great variability of volatile substances composition in olives and these data probably should be related to the story of olives after collecting.     

Dehydroindigo: a new piece into the Maya Blue puzzle from the voltammetry of microparticles approach

Combining a novel technique, the voltammetry of microparticles, with spectrometric, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy data, Maya Blue is detected in wall paintings of the Substructures A-3, A-5, and A-6, dated in the Early Classical period (440-450 a.c.), and the Substructure II-C, dated in the Late Preclassical period (150 b.C.), in the archaeological site of Calakmul (Campeche, Mexico), thus providing evidence on the use of the pigment 750 years prior to the date currently accepted. Electrochemical measurements, supported by spectrometric data, indicate that the presence of palygorskite-attached dehydroindigo, the oxidized form of indigo, contributes to the greenish color of Maya Blue. Enthalpy and entropy of attachment of such compounds to palygorskite are calculated from the temperature dependence of electrochemical data. Both attachment processes are endothermic, becoming thermodynamically spontaneous at moderate temperatures. Accordingly, ancient Mayas may modulate the hue of Maya Blue from turquoise to greenish blue by controlling the temperature during the crushing process.     

High-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis for the analysis of maize proteins

Methods for the analysis of maize proteins using HPLC and CE are reviewed. Most of the references cited in this review concern HPLC methods. Size-exclusion HPLC and especially RP-HPLC methods have been developed for characterization of normal and genetically modified maize, cultivar differentiation, and prediction of quality. Few CE methods for the analysis of maize proteins were found in the existing literature. Most of these methods focus on optimization of the separation of maize proteins using CZE and SDS-capillary gel electrophoresis.

An averaging method applied to a duffing equation

We approximate a Duffing equation by an averaged system. We solve the system explicitely and draw bifurcation diagrams in dependence of the forcing term. We discuss the goodness of the averaging method, relative to the behavior of the solutions in dependence of involved parameters, by comparing with results obtained in [6,10] for the original Duffing equation.     

Uniform resolvent convergence for strip with fast oscillating boundary

In a planar infinite strip with a fast oscillating boundary we consider an elliptic operator assuming that both the period and the amplitude of the oscillations are small. On the oscillating boundary we impose Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary condition. In all cases we describe the homogenized operator, establish the uniform resolvent convergence of the perturbed resolvent to the homogenized one, and prove the estimates for the rate of convergence. These results are obtained as the order of the amplitude of the oscillations is less, equal or greater than that of the period. It is shown that under the homogenization the type of the boundary condition can change.     

Screening of fluoroquinolones in environmental waters using disk-based solid-phase extraction combined to microplate fluorimetric determination and LC-MS/MS

Fluoroquinolones are in the order of the day concerning environmental contamination through anthropogenic activities, resulting in increased risk for antibiotic resistance dissemination. In this context, accessible, low-cost analytical methods are required for implementation of comprehensive surveillance and screening schemes. In this work, we propose a down-scaled disk-based solid-phase extraction system from which the eluate can be first screened by miniaturized fluorimetric reading, followed by individual determination of target fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and enrofloxacin) by liquid chromatography combined to tandem mass spectrometry. The fluorimetric measurement is based on the intrinsic fluorescence of fluoroquinolones. Disk-based retention was performed after sample acidification (pH 4.0) by mixed-mode cation exchange using polystyrene divinylbenzene sulphonated sorbent. Sample loading was precisely controlled in a dedicated flow system operating at 4.0 mL min^?1. Different eluent compositions were tested, with elution performed by 1.00 mL of methanol-ammonium hydroxide (98:2, v/v), with subsequent reading of eluate in both detectors. Quantification was attained for 2–25 µg L^?1 range, with LOD values at 1 µg L^?1. The proposed approach was successfully applied to estuarine waters from the Douro River, with comparable results to a conventional SPE-LC-MS/MS procedure.     

Square Wave Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry Determination of Chlorpyriphos in Irrigation Agricultural Water

This work describes the electroanalytical determination of Chlorpyriphos pesticide in natural waters using hanging mercury drop electrode allied to square wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry. The best responses were obtained in Britton?Robinson buffer solutions at pH 2.0, using a frequency of 100 s^–1, a scan increment of 5 mV, a square wave amplitude of 25 mV and an accumulation potential of–0.4 V during 60 s. Therefore, voltammetric responses showed the presence of one well-defined and irreversible reduction peak, at–1.08 V vs. Ag/AgCl/KCl 1.0 M, which involves two electrons in the reduction of carbon?nitrogen bond in the N-heterocyclic system with the participation of protonation equilibrium preceding the electron transfer reaction. Analytical curves were constructed and compared to similar curves performed by gas chromatograph coupled to a selective nitrogen?phosphorus detector, which demonstrates that the proposed methodology is suitable for determining contamination by Chlorpyriphos in complex samples.     

Regioselective halogenation of pyridinium N-(benzoazynyl) aminides as a way to produce N-benzyl-α-aminobenzoazines

The halogenation of pyridinium N-(benzoazynyl) aminides with N-halosuccinimides provides a mild and regioselective method to functionalize the negatively charged diazine moiety in most cases. In some examples, however, formation of other products is explained. Finally, alkylation of the exocyclic nitrogen and reduction of the N–N bond provides a simple and straightforward strategy to obtain functionalized N-benzyl-benzoazynyl-α-amines.
