Chaotic Expansion of Elements of the Universal Enveloping Algebra of a Lie Algebra Associated with a Quantum Stochastic Calculus

The functional Ito formula, in the form df() = f( + d ) –f(),is formulated and proved in the context of a Lie algebra L associatedwith a quantum (non-commutative) stochastic calculus. Here fis an element of the universal enveloping algebra U of L, andf() + d() – f() is given a meaning using the coproductstructure of U even though the individual terms of this expressionhave no meaning. Development of highly active and selective novel Pd based acetoxylation catalysts and prevention of catalyst deactivation by Bi modification

A first approach to successful prevention of catalyst deactivation while simultaneously achieving extremely high selectivity of benzyl acetate (> or = 95%) at significantly high toluene conversion (> 70%) by gas phase acetoxylation over novel Pd-Sb-Bi/TiO2 catalysts.     

Blind data restoration with an extracted filter function

A method for performing blind deconvolutions on degraded images and data has been developed. The technique uses a power law relation applied to the Fourier transform of the degraded data to extract a filter function. This filter function closely resembles the point-spread function of the system and can be used to restore and enhance higher-frequency content. The process is noniterative and requires only that the point-spread function be space invariant and the transfer function be real. The algorithm has been validated by direct comparisons by use of a pseudoinverse filter with known transfer functions.

Structural mimicry of two cytochrome b(562) interhelical loops using macrocycles constrained by oxazoles and thiazoles

A major chemical challenge is the structural mimicry of discontinuous protein surfaces brought into close proximity through polypeptide folding. We report the design, synthesis, and solution structure of a highly functionalized saddle-shaped macrocyclic scaffold, constrained by oxazoles and thiazoles, supporting two short peptide loops projecting orthogonally from the same face of the scaffold. This structural mimetic of two interhelical loops of cytochrome b(562) illustrates a promising approach to structurally mimicking discontinuous loops of proteins.     

The use of an air bubble curtain to reduce the received sound levels for harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena)

In December 2005 construction work was started to replace a harbor wall in Kerteminde harbor, Denmark. A total of 175 wooden piles were piled into the ground at the waters edge over a period of 3 months. During the same period three harbor porpoises were housed in a marine mammal facility on the opposite side of the harbor. All animals showed strong avoidance reactions after the start of the piling activities. As a measure to reduce the sound exposure for the animals an air bubble curtain was constructed and operated in a direct path between the piling site and the opening of the animals' semi-natural pool. The sound attenuation effect achieved with this system was determined by quantitative comparison of pile driving impulses simultaneously measured in front of and behind the active air bubble curtain. Mean levels of sound attenuation over a sequence of 95 consecutive pile strikes were 14 dB (standard deviation (s.d.) 3.4 dB) for peak to peak values and 13 dB (s.d. 2.5 dB) for SEL values. As soon as the air bubble curtain was installed and operated, no further avoidance reactions of the animals to the piling activities were apparent.
