We derive rigorously general results on the critical behavior of the magnetization in Ising models, as a function of the temperature and the external field. For the nearest-neighbor models it is shown that ind4 dimensions the magnetization is continuous atT c and its critical exponents take the classical values=3 and=1/2, with possible logarithmic corrections atd=4. The continuity, and other explicit bounds, formally extend tod>3 1/2. Other systems to which the results apply include long-range models ind=1 dimension, with 1/|x–y| couplings, for which 2/(–1) replacesd in the above summary. The results are obtained by means of differential inequalities derived here using the random current representation, which is discussed in detail for the case of a nonvanishing magnetic field.Research supported in part by NSF grant PHY-8301493 A02, and by a John S. We present a new environment for computations in particle physics phenomenology employing recent developments in cloud computing. On this environment users can create and manage “virtual” machines on which the phenomenology codes/tools can be deployed easily in an automated way. We analyze the performance of this environment based on “virtual” machines versus the utilization of physical hardware. In this way we provide a qualitative result for the influence of the host operating system on the performance of a representative set of applications for phenomenology calculations.  相似文献

We present two laser ultrasonic receivers based on organic photorefractive polymer composites with 2-[4-bis(2-methoxyethyl)aminobenzylidene]malononitrile (AODCST) or 2-dicyanomethylen-3-cyano-5,5-dimethyl-4-(4′-dihexylaminophenyl)-2,5-dihydrofuran nonlinear optical chromophores. Experimental results show sensitivities of the ultrasonic receivers of ~9.5 × 10?8 nm (W/Hz)0.5 for both composites, and a faster response time (~60 ms) for the AODCST-based laser ultrasonic receiver. We show that such LUS detectors are highly suitable for contactless thickness measurements of aluminum, steel sheets and defect detection with an accuracy of 100 μm.  相似文献

We develop an insightful transformation-optics approach to investigate the impact that nonlocality has on the optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures. The light-harvesting performance of a dimer of touching nanowires is studied by using the hydrodynamical Drude model, which reveals nonlocal resonances not predicted by previous local calculations. Our method clarifies the interplay between radiative and nonlocal effects in this nanoparticle configuration, which enables us to elucidate the optimum size that maximizes its absorption and field enhancement capabilities.  相似文献

The infrared optical properties of Er3+ ions are reported for 60GeO2–20PbO–20Na2O glass for two Er2O3 concentrations. From the optical absorption spectra, the Judd–Ofelt (J–O) parameters have been obtained and have been used to calculate radiative lifetimes and stimulated emission cross sections. A narrow emission band peaked at 1536 nm with exponential decay for both Er concentrations is observed. The measured lifetime decreases for increasing Er concentration, its value being very close, in the case of the lowest doping level, to the radiative lifetime calculated from J–O analysis. This, together with the relatively high emission cross section makes this glass suitable for laser applications.  相似文献

Quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect are two very different quantum phenomena that produce the same effect on quantized spins, namely, the quenching of their magnetization. However, the nature of this quenching is very different so that quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect compete with each other. Importantly, both quantum spin tunneling and Kondo effect produce very characteristic features in the spectral function that can be measured by means of single spin scanning tunneling spectroscopy and allows to probe the crossover from one regime to the other. We model this crossover, and the resulting changes in transport, using a non-perturbative treatment of a generalized Anderson model including magnetic anisotropy that leads to quantum spin tunneling. We predict that, at zero magnetic field, integer spins can feature a split-Kondo peak driven by quantum spin tunneling.  相似文献

Ever since the pioneering works of Bekenstein and Hawking, black hole entropy has been known to have a quantum origin. Furthermore, it has long been argued by Bekenstein that entropy should be quantized in discrete (equidistant) steps given its identification with horizon area in (semi-)classical general relativity and the properties of area as an adiabatic invariant. This lead to the suggestion that the black hole area should also be quantized in equidistant steps to account for the discrete black hole entropy. Here we shall show that loop quantum gravity, in which area is not quantized in equidistant steps, can nevertheless be consistent with Bekenstein's equidistant entropy proposal in a subtle way. For that we perform a detailed analysis of the number of microstates compatible with a given area and show consistency with the Bekenstein framework when an oscillatory behavior in the entropy-area relation is properly interpreted.  相似文献

Two magnetic composites made up of Fe nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) embedded in a porous amorphous carbon matrix are presented. One of the samples, Fe-S-AC, was obtained with the aid of sucrose and the other, Fe-AC, in the absence of this substance. The XRD patterns show Bragg diffraction peaks associated with α-Fe and γ-Fe crystalline phases in the Fe-AC sample, while only peaks corresponding to the α-Fe phase are observed for Fe-S-AC powders. The Fe-NPs exhibit broad particle-size distributions for both samples, 5–50 nm for Fe-AC, whereas two populations (2–8 and 10–70 nm) for the Fe-S-AC composite are found. This fact gives rise to poorly defined blocking temperatures, as it can be deduced from the broad maxima observed in MZFC(T) variations. In addition, M(H) curves for both Fe-AC and Fe-S-AC samples reveal the existence of exchange-bias effect for T<60 K, probably due to a magnetic coupling within a core/shell structure of the Fe-NPs, although this effect was observed to be less significant for Fe-S-AC.  相似文献

Candida parapsilosis is found frequently as commensal organism on epithelial tissues, and is also an increasing cause of nosocomial infection. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were used to analyse the capability of C. parapsilosis cells to adhere and grow as biofilm on human natural substrates and to compare the adherence pattern of isolates exhibiting distinct phenotypes. Cells from the crepe phenotype are predominantly elongated and form pseudohyphae whereas cells from the smooth phenotype are yeast-shaped, either in liquid cultures or on human nail and hair surfaces. The electron micrographs revealed that C. parapsilosis cells from the smooth phenotype adhered in higher number to both surfaces compared to the observed for the crepe phenotype. SEM analysis of human hair surface revealed that cells from the smooth phenotype appear as clumped blastoconidia of uniform morphology embedded in a flocculent extracellular material forming biofilm. The extracellular material and biofilm were seeing in a less extension in the crepe phenotype. A distinct adherence pattern was observed when human nail was used as substrate. Here C. parapsilosis cells seem to be linked to surface structures of human nail plate. Fibrillar extracellular material was observed connecting neighbouring cells as well as nail surface.  相似文献
