The development and evaluation of electrolysis in conjunction with power ultrasound for the disinfection of bacterial suspensions

There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of potable waters. This has compelled scientists and engineers to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a maximum disinfection at affordable costs. Some species of bacteria produce colonies and spores that can agglomerate in spherical clusters and thus protect organisms on the inside of the cluster against biocidal attack. Flocs of fine particles (e.g., clay) can entrap bacteria and this can also protect them against the biocides. Other bacteria have the ability to mutate, thus building up resistance to conventional biocides (e.g., chlorine).Ultrasound has been shown to be effective in improving the effectiveness of biocides such as chlorine. The aim of this present study was to investigate the effect of electrolysis and power ultrasound as a disinfection treatment and to provide a greater knowledge of the fundamentals of disinfection through the production of hypochlorite in situ from saline solution via electrolysis. The electrode materials investigated were, carbon (felt and graphite), copper and stainless steel rods. The results show that sonication appears to amplify the effect of electrolysis. A combination of both treatments is significantly better than sonication or electrolysis alone.     

An Affine Characterization of Moufang Projective Klingenberg Planes

It is shown that with minor exceptions all projective Klingenberg planes are Moufang exactly if they have a trilateral each of whose sides is the line at infinity of a translation plane; but there are non-Moufang projective Klingenberg planes which have a single line which produces an equiaffine translation plane or a point P so that all lines through P, except perhaps for some neighbour lines, produce translation planes.     

On projective planes of type (5, m)

If a group acts on a finite projective plane to make it a plane of type (5,m) then the related 2-transitive permutation representation of it has a normal regular subgroup.Some of the research which is reported in this paper was carried out at the Universität Kaiserslautern while I was a von Humboldt Fellow. Connectedness in topological Hjelmslev planes

Summary It is shown that a topological affine Hjelmslev plane is connected or the quasi-component of each point is contained in its neighbour class. If one neighbour class of a point is connected, then they all are, and each is equal to the quasi-component and the component of the point. For topological projective Hjelmslev planes a weaker form of connectedness (∼-connectedness) is defined and it is proved that the plane is ∼-connected or each neighbour class is equal to it ∼-quasi-component. In addition it is shown that the ∼-connectedness of the plane is equivalent to the ∼-connectedness of a line, or other special subsets of the plane, or the connectedness of a line in the associated ordinary plane. Finally it is shown, if the plane is uniform, that ∼-connectedness and connectedness are equivalent and so the plane is either connected, totally disconnected or each neighbour class is equal to the corresponding quasi-component. Visible‐Light‐Mediated Photocatalytic Difunctionalization of Olefins by Radical Acylarylation and Tandem Acylation/Semipinacol Rearrangement

A novel method for the mild photoredox‐mediated tandem radical acylarylation and tandem acylation/semipinacol rearrangement has been developed. The synthesis of highly functionalized ketones bearing all‐carbon α‐ or β‐quaternary centers has been achieved using easily available symmetric aromatic carboxylic anhydrides as the acyl radical source. The method allows for a straightforward introduction of the keto functionality and concomitant construction of molecular complexity in a single operation.     

Coordinate rings of topological Klingenberg planes II: the algebraic foundation for a projective theory

Ternary fields are the coordinate rings of affine and projective planes; however, the planes constructed over topological ternary fields are not necessarily topological. Surprisingly, the explanation of this phenomenon becomes evident in the more general theory of topological Klingenberg planes as we exhibited in [3] for the affine case. However, in the projective setting, we have a more formidable task. We must develop a new coordinate ring that admits a topological structure suitable for coordinatizing topological PK-planes. We accomplish this in two stages. In this paper, we revisit the standard coordinate rings [1, 11], discuss and resolve their deficiencies by developing a new coordinate ring as a unique extension of these refined standard rings. In a subsequent paper [4], we show that this new ring can be suitably topologized to coordinatize a topological PK-plane. This last result can then be used to explain why topological ternary fields do not necessarily coordinatize topological projective planes. Received 17 February 2000; revised 10 June 2000.     

Ultrasonic enhancement of electrochemiluminescence from arylacetate electrooxidation

This paper describes the previously unreported electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) from the electro-oxidation of several aryl carboxylates at a platinum flag electrode in aqueous, methanolic and acetonitrile solutions using tetramethylammonium hydroxides as a supporting electrolyte. In most cases electrochemiluminescence was markedly enhanced by simultaneous irradiation with ultrasound during electrolysis. Increase in electrochemiluminescence intensity with electrolysis current and carboxylate concentration was observed. Addition of a radical scavenger or purging of the solution with oxygen lowers ECL emission intensity. In contrast the presence of oxygen enhances the intensity of sonoluminescence, which is a concurrent but weaker process occurring under ultrasonic irradiation alone. Ring-substituted phenylacetates almost always produced less electrochemiluminescence than the unsubstituted parent molecule, though within the substituents studied chloro-substituted phenylacetates produced more ECL intensity than either methoxy- or nitro-substituted derivatives.     

A projective plane of order 16

A projective plane of order 16 is constructed. It is a translation plane and appears to be new. The representation of the collineation group on the axis of the plane has a normal subgroup isomorphic to L₃ (2) with factor group isomorphic to S₃. The orbits of this representation have lengths 14 and 3. If two points in the latter orbit are chosen to define a sharply doubly transitive set of permutations, the permutations from the multiplicative loop generate a group isomorphic to A₇. The plane is of Lenz-Barlotti class IVa.1.     

Homomorphisms of affine spaces

We present a comparative treatment of two approaches to homomorphisms between affine spaces of dimensionn≥2 that leads to characterizations of homomorphisms of these geometries that preserve dimension and parallelism.
