Cobalt phthalocyanine derivatives supported on TiO2 by sol–gel processing: Part 2. Activity in sulfide and ethanethiol oxidation

The catalytic activity of cobalt(II) 2,9,16,23-tetrasulphophthalocyanine and cobalt(II) 2,9,16,23-tetra(chlorosulphonyl)phthalocyanine covalently bonded to a TiO₂ matrix by sol–gel processing was investigated for sulfide and ethanethiol (CH₃CH₂SH) liquid-phase oxidation. A comparison of the kinetic data as well as the state of active component by using electron spectroscopy in dependence on precursors was carried out. Kinetic data shows that the most stable and active catalysts for ethanethiol oxidation are both CoPc(SO₃H)₄ and CoPc(SO₂Cl)₄ in TiO₂ from Ti(OⁱPr)₄, whereas in the case of Na₂S oxidation in neutral medium the activity of the former is higher.     

On galois descent for Hochschild and cyclic homology

LetG be a finite group acting by automorphisms on an algebraS over some commutative ringk. We show that if the action ofG restricted to the center ofS is Galois in the sense of [C-H-R], thenHH _*(S ^G)≊HH _* (S) ^G. Reynold''s Transport Theorem for Differential Inclusions

The well-known Reynold's Transport Theorem deals with the integral over a time-dependent set (that is evolving along a smooth vector field) and specifies its semiderivative with respect to time. Here reachable sets of differential inclusions are considered instead. Dispensing with any assumptions about the regularity of the compact initial set, we give sufficient conditions on the differential inclusion for the absolute continuity (of the integral) with respect to time and its weak derivative is formulated as a Hausdorff integral over the topological boundary.     

An optimization‐based undeflated PLS (OUPLS) method to handle missing data in the training set

Advances in sensory systems have led to many industrial applications with large amounts of highly correlated data, particularly in chemical and pharmaceutical processes. With these correlated data sets, it becomes important to consider advanced modeling approaches built to deal with correlated inputs in order to understand the underlying sources of variability and how this variability will affect the final quality of the product. Additional to the correlated nature of the data sets, it is also common to find missing elements and noise in these data matrices. Latent variable regression methods such as partial least squares or projection to latent structures (PLS) have gained much attention in industry for their ability to handle ill‐conditioned matrices with missing elements. This feature of the PLS method is accomplished through the nonlinear iterative PLS (NIPALS) algorithm, with a simple modification to consider the missing data. Moreover, in expectation maximization PLS (EM‐PLS), imputed values are provided for missing data elements as initial estimates, conventional PLS is then applied to update these elements, and the process iterates to convergence. This study is the extension of previous work for principal component analysis (PCA), where we introduced nonlinear programming (NLP) as a means to estimate the parameters of the PCA model. Here, we focus on the parameters of a PLS model. As an alternative to modified NIPALS and EM‐PLS, this paper presents an efficient NLP‐based technique to find model parameters for PLS, where the desired properties of the parameters can be explicitly posed as constraints in the optimization problem of the proposed algorithm. We also present a number of simulation studies, where we compare effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with competing algorithms. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Coating of titanium implant materials with thin polymeric films for binding the signaling protein BMP2

A fast and simple approach for immobilization using copolymers as interlayers is reported. The synthesized copolymers form stable self-assembled layers on implant materials like, e.g., titanium in a simple coating/drying/washing sequence and have functional groups which can bind proteins from an aqueous solution. The copolymer films have been characterized via ellipsometry and contact angle measurements and were tested for biocompatibility. An immunoassay was used to determine the amount of BMP2 and demonstrated an approximately 10-fold increase as compared to previously used self-assembled monolayers. A BMP2-responsive cell line with luciferase detection was used to determine the biological activity of the bound signaling protein.     

On the Arf invariant in historical perspective, part?2

This is a continuation of our previous article (Lorenz and Roquette in Math. Semesterber. 57(1):73?C102, 2010) in this journal, where we discussed the paper of Cahit Arf (J. Reine Angew. Math. 183:148?C167, 1941). There he introduced what today is called the ??Arf invariant?? of a quadratic form over a field of characteristic?2. After our article had appeared we obtained some new information about the present state of the theory. When we say ??new?? then this means that this was new to us, i.e., we had not been aware before of the literature on the subject. (See our list of references.) It seems worthwhile to us to report here about it, as far as it is relevant for the assessment of Arf??s paper in its historical perspective.
