Crystal chemistry of lanthanide oxochlorotungstates

Crystal chemical properties of lanthanide oxochlorotungstates of composition LnWO₄Cl (Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) are reported. The unit cell parameters a, b, c, c′, and V of the LnWO₄Cl compounds are correlated with lanthanide ionic radii from different radius systems and with the lanthanide atomic number. The ionic radius systems most suitable for describing the crystal chemical properties of the lanthanide oxochlorotungstates are determined.     

Quantum-chemical modelling of the reactivity of charcoal surface double bonds

LCAO MO SCF calculations using the 3-21G basis were used to study the electronic and three-dimensional structure of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as models for the surface of activated charcoal. Localized carbon-carbon double bonds capable of adding electrophilic reagents were found on the periphery of these molecules. The reactivity of the peripheral C=C bonds was evaluated relative to consecutive bromination reactions of the C₅₄H₁₈ molecule. __________ Translated from Teoreticheskaya i éksperimental’naya Khimiya, Vol. 44, No. 1, pp. 30–34, January–February, 2008.     

Facility for preparation of gas mixture in muon catalyzed fusion experiments

A facility is described that allows safe handling of high tritium gas activity as dozens kilocuries in a regular laboratory environment. It is used to make and deliver into the target a mixture of specific isotopic composition with the contamination requirement of 10^-7 v.f. for Z>1 elements, and recover it upon completion of operation. With this facility, efforts have been accomplished to investigate into the muon catalyzed fusion on two targets – liquid tritium and high-pressure tritium types. Also, the operation range was 0.1–120 MPa for pressure and 20–800 K for temperature and the amount of tritium used was about 100 kCi. The facility showed reliability in operation without indications of radiation beyond the safety level. The propagation of wave beams in 2D cascade-induced lattices

A new method of 2D periodic lattices excitation in quadratically nonlinear media with cascade interaction is suggested. It is shown that in such structures the all-optical management of laser beams could be carried out. The possibility of switching waveguides and changing the final energy distribution among channels using the phenomenon of discrete diffraction is demonstrated.     

The effect of total internal reflection of wave beams in nonlinear media

The recent papers that consider new effects attributed to the total refection of a weak beam at a more powerful beam with another frequency in nonlinear media are reviewed. As an example, the dynamics of the beam reflection in media with thermal nonlinearity and photorefractive crystals are analyzed.     

Optical pulse velocity and frequency variations during cascade parametric interaction with a high powered reference pulse

The effect of a frequency shift and time delay during the cascade parametric interaction of a weak signal pulse with a high powered reference pulse is demonstrated for the first time. The conditions of total reflection of a pulse signal in a crystal with quadratic nonlinearity are found. The equation for the frequency shift of a reflected wave is derived.     

Operators of observables for a neutral particle with anomalous magnetic moment in an electromagnetic field

The explicit form of operators of kinetic momenta and spin projection for a neutral particle with an anomalous magnetic moment in constant homogeneous electromagnetic field is found. The possible applications of the obtained results in neutrino physics are considered.     

The adsorption of biogenic amines on carbon nanotubes

The adsorption of phenylethylamine, tryptamine, and tyramine on carbon nanotubes from aqueous solutions (pH 7.4) was studied depending on time and sorbate concentration. The suggestion was made that their interaction with electrodes was determined by electrostatic attraction between protonated amino groups and oxygen-containing functional groups of the surface of carbon. An increase in the adsorption of biological amines was caused by the interaction of the π systems of their aromatic rings with carbon surface hexagons. The adsorption of biogenic amines on carbon nanotubes was necessary for their possible electrooxidation and analytic determination by electrochemical methods with the use of carbon electrodes.
