The recently developed NMR SPDE experiment is shown to provide a new and particularly convenient technique for probing the conformational dynamics of mesogens in thermotropic liquid crystals. Measurements have been made in the nematic and smectic phases of the 4,4′-di-n-alkoxyazoxybenzenes. It is shown for the first time that the internal disorder of the alkyl end chains is intimately related to the molecular organization of these mesophases.  相似文献

The field-induced alignment of a smectic-A phase is, in principle, a complicated process involving the director rotation via the interaction with the field and the layer rotation via the molecular interactions. Time-resolved nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy has revealed this complexity in the case of the director alignment, but provides no direct information on the motion of the layers. Here we describe a time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiment using synchrotron radiation to solve the challenging problem of capturing the diffraction pattern on a time scale which is fast in comparison with that for the alignment of the smectic layers. We have investigated the alignment of the smectic-A phase of 4-octyl-4(')-cyanobiphenyl by a magnetic field. The experiment consists of creating a monodomain sample of the smectic-A phase by slow cooling from the nematic phase in a magnetic field with a flux density of 7 T. The sample is then turned quickly through an angle phi(0) about an axis parallel to the x-ray beam direction but orthogonal to the field. A sequence of two-dimensional small angle x-ray diffraction patterns are then collected at short time intervals. Experiments were carried out for different values of phi(0), and at different temperatures. The results show that the alignment behavior changes fundamentally when phi(0) exceeds 45 degrees, and that there is a sharp change in the alignment process when the temperature is less than 3 degrees C below the smectic-A-nematic transition. The results of the x-ray experiments are in broad agreement with the NMR results, but reveal major phenomena concerning the maintenance of the integrity of the smectic-A layer structure during the alignment process.  相似文献

Using an antibody to BN 52719, an analogue of platelet activating factor (PAF), immunoaffinity mini-columns for the separation of PAF from biological samples were prepared. Rabbits were immunized with BN 52719 and immunoglobulin G (IgG) from the antiserum was coupled with Sepharose 4B. The resulting suspension of the IgG-coated Sepharose 4B in 25 mM phosphate buffer (pH 6.9) was poured into a plastic mini-column (bed volume 2.0 x 0.8 cm). Stepwise elution of the column with methanol revealed that lyso-PAF is eluted with 20-30% methanol in water whereas PAF is eluted with 50-80% methanol. For the determination of PAF in biological samples, it is recommended that lipids are extracted from the samples and the extract, reconstituted in 20% methanol, is loaded on the column. The column is then washed with 50% methanol followed by elution of PAF with 80% methanol. A small amount of [3H]PAF is added to the samples for measurement of the recoveries of PAF during the procedures of extraction and elution. The PAF is then quantified by radioimmunoassay or bioassay. Employing the immunoaffinity mini-column and radioimmunoassay, the contents of PAF in macrophages and conditioned medium after stimulation with calcium ionophore A23187, or tumor promoters such as TPA and thapsigargin, were measured.  相似文献

NMR SPDE measurements are reported for the lamellar (dispersions and multibilayer stacks) and hexagonal phases of sodium octanoate/octanol/D2O mixtures. In the lamellar Lβ and Lγ (gel) phases the octyl chains are rigid and perfectly ordered, while in the lamellar Lα and hexagonal phases they are flexible and disordered. In particular, the measurements show that in the fluid lamellar Lα phase, there is a marked discontinuity in the octyl chain flexibility at the C5-C6 segment; this behaviour is identical to that previously reported for the alkyl end-chains in smectic 4,4′-di-n-octyloxyazoxybenzene. In contrast, in the hexagonal phase, there is an effectively continuous flexibility gradient along the whole length of the octyl chain as in nematic 4,4′-di-n-octyloxyazoxybenzene. The behaviour in the lamellar phase is attributed to interference between cooperative conformational modes and localized random thermal fluctuations.  相似文献

The focused ion beam lift-out technique for scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) sample preparation was shown to be applicable to copper/low-k dielectric semiconductor technology. High resolution SEM, TEM, and scanning transmission electron microscope analyses were performed on metal contacts and resist vias with no evidence of the interface damage or metal smearing commonly observed with mechanical polishing. Ion milling of the sample ex situ to the substrate provided decoration and adjustment of the exposed plane of the section when necessary for SEM analysis.  相似文献

10-Chloro-7,8-dimethylpyrimido[5,4-b]quinolin-2,4(1H,3H)dione (I) was unreactive toward ammonia but it reacted with 2 molecules of n-butylamine, presumably via Dimroth-type ring-opening and closure, to give the N3-butyl, N10-butylamino derivative (IV). In similar reactions of 10-chloro-2,4-dimethoxy-7,8-dimethylpyrimido[5,4-b]quinoline (II) only the 4-meth-oxyl was displaced by either ammonia or n-butylamine. Alkyllithium reagents also displaced the 4-methoxyl as well as added to the 3,4 double bond of II to yield the corresponding gem-dialkyl substituted (C4) derivatives; the C10 chlorine remained unreactive. 2,4-Dimethoxy-7,8-di-methylpyrimido[5,4-b]quinoline-10-one (III) could be alkylated only in the form of the thallium salt. Treatment of the benzyl derivative of III with methylmagnesium bromide led only to the displacement of the 4-methoxyl by a methyl group.  相似文献

Diglycidyl ethers of 1,3-bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)adamantane (BHPA) and 3,3'-bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1,1'-biadamantane (BHPBA) were prepared and condensed with m-phenylenediamine and methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride to give polymers with good high temperature mechanical properties and good oxidative stability.
