A nuclear magnetic resonance determination of the barrier to internal rotation in phenylethane

The long-range nuclear spin-spin coupling constant between the methylene protons and the ring protons at the para position in 3,5-dibromo-phenylethane in benzene solution is consistent with a two-fold barrier of 1.2 ± 0.1 kcal/mole to rotation about the sp²-sp³ carbon-carbon bond, in agreement with thermodynamic data on phenylethane and with deductions based on hyperfine interactions in related radical anions. The low-energy conformation has a plane of symmetry, the methyl group being situated out of the aromatic plane, in disagreement with Raman depolarization data interpretations and with deductions based on proton chemical shifts.     

Thermodynamics of electrolytes. X. Enthalpy and the effect of temperature on the activity coefficients

Heat of dilution and of solution data are fitted to the form of equation corresponding to that used successfully for activity and osmotic coefficients over a wide range of concentrations. The resulting parameters give the change with temperature of the activity and osmotic coefficients. Results are reported for 84 electrolytes of 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, and 2-2 valence types.     

Amperometric titration of cerium(iii) with ferricyanide

Milligram and larger quantities of cerous cerium may be determined accurately and precisely, even in the presence of large amounts of ceric salts, by amperometric titration in 3 to 4M potassium carbonate solution with potassium ferricyanide. A rotating platinum microelectrode held at the potential of the saturated calomel electrode is recommended.     

Enclathration of morpholinium cations by Dianin's compound: salt formation by partial host-to-guest proton transfer

In spite of partial deprotonation upon inclusion of morpholine, Dianin's compound maintains its well-known clathrate structure in the solid state.
