Pure point diffraction and cut and project schemes for measures: the smooth case

We present a cut and project formalism based on measures and continuous weight functions of sufficiently fast decay. The emerging measures are strongly almost periodic. The corresponding dynamical systems are compact groups and homomorphic images of the underlying torus. In particular, they are strictly ergodic with pure point spectrum and continuous eigenfunctions. Their diffraction can be calculated explicitly. Our results cover and extend corresponding earlier results on dense Dirac combs and continuous weight functions with compact support. They also mark a clear difference in terms of factor maps between the case of continuous and non-continuous weight functions. Dedicated to Robert V. Moody on the occasion of his 65th birthday

Two remarks on affine designs with classical parameters

Simple proofs are given for Dembowski's theorem characterizing the classical affine designs and for the existence of affine designs with classical parameters but not isomorphic to any affine space.     

Liquid crystal polymers. IV. Thermotropic polyesters with flexible spacers in the main chain

Two closely related series of polyesters that contain mesogenic units interconnected by flexible spacers along the main chain were prepared and characterized for their liquid crystal properties. All of these polymers showed theotropic behavior, which was examined by DSC, hot-stage microscopy on a polarizing microscope, small-angle light and wide-angle x-ray scattering methods, and visual observation of stir-opalescence of the polymer melts. The effect of the length of the flexible spacer and the nature of the substituent, which is on the central aromatic ring of the mesogenic unit, on the stability and molecular order of the mesophase for each of the polymers was investigated and the results are discussed on the basis of the thermodynamic data obtained.     

A fast screening method for the identification of siderophores from fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. by liquid chromatography/electrospray mass spectrometry

A screening method was developed for the fast identification of known pyoverdin-type siderophores produced by fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. It is based on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography interfaced with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry of the Sep-Pak RP-C18 culture supernatant extracts. The siderophores of five bacterial strains were characterized by their molecular masses obtained from their doubly protonated molecular ions [M + 2H]2+ and their UV/visible spectra recorded with a diode-array detector. Additional structural information was gained by skimmer collision-induced dissociation experiments. For all strains new minor siderophores were found. A table of fully or partially identified pyoverdins and related siderophores is provided which will be the basis for screening studies.
