We report experimental observation of passive harmonic mode locking (HML) in which the basic pattern is a soliton crystal. Several crystal states were generated from an initial large bound state by increasing the pump power. The design and operations of inpatient care facilities are typically largely historically shaped. A better match with the changing environment is often possible, and even inevitable due to the pressure on hospital budgets. Effectively organizing inpatient care requires simultaneous consideration of several interrelated planning issues. Also, coordination with upstream departments like the operating theatre and the emergency department is much-needed. We present a generic analytical approach to predict bed census on nursing wards by hour, as a function of the Master Surgical Schedule and arrival patterns of emergency patients. Along these predictions, insight is gained on the impact of strategic (ie, case mix, care unit size, care unit partitioning), tactical (ie, allocation of operating room time, misplacement rules), and operational decisions (ie, time of admission/discharge). The method is used in the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam as a decision-support tool in a complete redesign of the inpatient care operations. 相似文献

We present a statistical analysis of some geometrical features of the front of a tensile tunnel-crack propagating quasistatically, according to some Paris-type law, in some elastic solid with spatially varying Paris constant. The work is based on an earlier formula of the authors, which provides the first-order change of the distribution of the mode I stress intensity factor along the front of a tunnel-crack, arising from some small but otherwise arbitrary in-plane perturbation of this front. The quantities studied include the power spectrum and the autocorrelation function of the deviation of the two parts of the front from reference straight lines, the autocorrelation function of the derivative of this deviation in the direction of the crack front, the mean squared fluctuation of the deviation, and its correlation distance. The various measures of the magnitude of the deviation of the front from straightness are all found to increase in time at a considerable rate, which means in some sense that the “wavyness” of the front continuously grows. However, the correlation distance of the deviation also increases, which mitigates the preceding conclusion, since it means in another sense that the crack front tends to “straighten back” in time. Also, comparisons are made with the cases of a semi-infinite crack propagating quasistatically or dynamically, using some results of Rice and coworkers for the latter case. The rate of growth of the various measures of the magnitude of the deviation from straightness is much larger for the tunnel-crack than for the semi-infinite one. This is because the finite width of the tunnel-crack induces a “destabilizing” effect of the straight configuration of the front for sinusoidal perturbations with large wavelengths, which is typical of such finite crack geometries. 相似文献

This paper deals with the transient motions experienced by an elastic circular cylinder in a cylindrical fluid domain initially at rest and subjected to small-amplitude imposed displacements. Three fluid models are considered, namely potential, viscous and acoustic, to cover different fluid–structure interaction regimes. They are derived here from the general compressible Navier–Stokes equations by a formal perturbation method so as to underline their links and ranges of validity a priori. The resulting fluid models are linear owing to the small-amplitude-displacement hypothesis. For simplicity, the elastic flexure beam model is chosen for the circular cylinder dynamics. The semi-analytical approach used here is based on the methods of Laplace transform in time, in vacuo eigenvector expansion with time-dependent coefficients for the transverse beam displacement and separation of variables for the fluid. Moreover, the viscous case is handled with a matched asymptotic expansion performed at first order. The projection of the fluid forces on the in vacuo eigenvectors leads to a fully coupled system involving the modal time-dependent displacement coefficients. These coefficients are then obtained by matrix inversion in the Laplace domain and fast numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. The three models, written in the form of convolution products, are described through the analysis of their kernels, involving both the wave propagation phenomena in the fluid domain and the beam elasticity. Last, the three models are illustrated for a specific imposed motion mimicking shock loading. It is shown that their combination permits coverage of a broad range of motions. 相似文献

Linear and non-linear dielectric measurements were carried out on a ferroelectric liquid crystal stabilized by an anisotropic
polymer network. The polymerization process was achieved at room temperature. It was performed from an achiral monomer in
the ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase, exhibiting a very short helical pitch and a large polarization. The linear and non-linear
dielectric spectroscopy were also completed by textural morphology as well as structural and ferroelectric characterizations.
All these measurements were carried out on a pure ferroelectric liquid crystal material and on composite films containing
two polymer concentrations. The increase of the polymer network density leads to a decrease of the dielectric strength determined
in the linear and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy. The complementarity between the linear and non-linear dielectric measurements
and their confrontation with a theoretical model allowed the simultaneous determination of some physical parameters such as
macroscopic polarization, rotational viscosity and twist elastic energy. We also discuss the effect of the polymer network
