Competitive influence of atactic polystyrene and supercritical carbon dioxide on the conformation of syndiotactic polystyrene

The crystallization behavior of miscible syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) and atactic polystyrene (aPS) blends with different sPS/aPS weight ratios was investigated in supercritical CO₂ by using Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. Supercritical CO₂ and aPS exhibited different effects on the conformational change of sPS and competed with each other. Increasing the content of amorphous aPS in the blends made its effect on the conformational change of sPS gradually surpass that of supercritical CO₂. Supercritical CO₂ favored the formation of the helical conformation of sPS in lower temperature range and the all trans planar conformation in higher temperature range, instead of forming the latter one only in higher temperature range in ambient atmosphere. However, increasing aPS content in the blends pushed the range for forming the helical conformation to lower temperature and made the all trans planar conformation dominant in aPS/sPS 25/75 blend after treating in supercritical CO₂ above 60 °C. The all trans planar zigzag conformation was more favorable than the helical conformation after mixing aPS in sPS in supercritical CO₂. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electronic and Magnetic Properties of the p-NPNN

In this paper, we study the electronic band structure and the ferromagnetic properties of the organic radicalp-NPNN by employing density-functional theory with generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and local-spin densityapproximation (LSDA). The density of states, the total energy, and the spin magnetic moment are calculated. Thecalculations reveal that the δ-phase of p-NPNN has a stable ferromagnetic ground state. It is found that an unpairedelectron in this compound is localized in a single occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) constituted primarily of π* (NO)orbitals, and the main contribution of the spin magnetic moment comes from the π* (NO) orbitals. By comparison, wefind that the GGA is more suitable to describe free radical systems than LSDA.

Single Production of Charged Top-Pions at High Energy Linear e+e- Colliders

The dominant decay modes of charged top-pions (π±t ) are tb or ~b. We consider the single production ofcharged top-pions in association with a top quark via e+ e- annihilation and calculate the production cross section of theprocesses e+ e- → t-bπ+ (tb-π-) at the leading order. We find that it can reach 1.2 fb with reasonable parameter values.The charged top-pions may be detected via the channel tbπ± in the future high energy e+ e- colliders.

By using Fluent software with the Eulerian multiphase model and Non-equilibrium boiling model, the subcooled flow boiling heat transfers was numerically simulated in the plain upward vertical tubes under the condition of one-side heating. The influences of the different mass flux, inlet temperatures and heat flux on the heat transfer coefficient, the void fraction and heat transfer deterioration were investigated.     

Synthesis of poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl groups and its further initiation of the grafting polymerization of styrene

A new stratagem for the synthesis of amphiphilic graft copolymers of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) as the main chain and hydrophobic polystyrene as the side chains is suggested. A poly(ethylene oxide) with pending 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyls [poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide)] was first prepared by the anionic ring‐opening copolymerization of ethylene oxide and 4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl, and then the graft copolymerization of styrene was completed with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator in the presence of poly(4‐glycidyloxy‐2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl‐co‐ethylene oxide). The polymerization of styrene was under control, and comblike, amphiphilic poly(ethylene oxide)‐g‐polystyrene was obtained. The copolymer and its intermediates were characterized with size exclusion chromatography, ¹H NMR, and electron spin resonance in detail. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Determination of 17 kinds of banned organochlorine pesticides in water by activated carbon fiber-solid phase microextraction coupled with GC-MS.

Activated carbon fiber (ACF) as extraction fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and its application for the analysis of banned organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated. Firstly, ACF was activated by different concentration of zinc chloride, which indicated that ACF activated by 60% zinc chloride had a reasonable specific surface area, pore volume and pore distribution. Secondly, the parameters for the ACF-SPME procedure, the adsorption and desorption conditions, were also optimized when coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Thirdly, the ACF-SPME was used to analyze 17 kinds of OCPs in water. The linearity of most pesticides was found to be between 0.2 and 50 microg/l with GC-MS under the selected ion monitoring (SIM) acquisition mode. The limits of detection (LOD) at the sub microg/l were obtained. The work demonstrated here shows that ACF is a promising alternative for the SPME procedure.
