Complex Geometry of the Universal Teichmuller Space

We prove that all invariant distances on the universal Teichmuller space agree and are determined by the Grunsky coefficients of the naturally related conformal maps. This fact yields various important consequences; in particular, we obtain solutions of certain well-known geometric problems in complex analysis and related fields.     

Bounds and Inequalities for the Perron Root of a Nonnegative Matrix

In this paper, bounds and inequalities for the Perron root of a nonnegative matrix, extending and complementing the classical theorems of Frobenius and Ostrowski in terms of (deleted) row and column sums, are presented. All the results are derived by using the same approach, based on the monotonicity property of the Perron root. Bibliography: 12 titles.     

Catalytic Hydrosilylation of Furan, Thiophene, and Pyridine Aldimines

The addition of hydrosilanes (HSiEt₃, HSiMe₂Ph, H₂SiPh₂) to the CH=N bond of heterocyclic azomethines has been studied in the presence of monovalent complexes of rhodium and palladium. The effect on the reaction of the CF₃ group of the aldimines, which were obtained from O-, S-, and N-heteroaromatic aldehydes and 2-trifluoromethylaniline, has been clarified, as were other regularities of the processes being studied. A series of corresponding furans, thiophenes, and pyridine amines has been synthesized.     

Evaluation of Polycation-Stabilized Lactate Oxidase in a Silica Sol–Gel as a Biosensor Platform

 Whereas glucose oxidase and related proteins are encapsulated readily in silica sol–gels, α-hydroxy enzymes such as lactate oxidase (LOx), are reported to be damaged by electrostatic interaction with these matrices. Based on a previous report, poly(ethyleneimine), PEI, was evaluated as a protecting compound under conditions suited to analytical measurements. With LOx and PEI co-encapsulated in a silica sol–gel, the enzyme retained 62% of its initial activity after 20 days. In the absence of PEI, activity was lost during the processing. Batch analytical measurements with enzyme-doped sol–gel yielded a linear response over the range 0.5–2.0 mM lactate and a detection limit of 0.03 mM lactate. Both simple incorporation of LOx in a silica sol–gel and an alternative protection method, blocking the ion-exchange sites on silica with La(III), failed. These negative results supported the hypothesis that the efficacy of PEI was related to its formation of a protective sheath around the enzyme. Author for correspondence. Measurement of the dynamic elastic constants of short isotropic cylinders

A method based on a single test is proposed to characterize the elasticity of an isotropic homogeneous material in the shape of a cylinder of any slenderness (length-diameter) ratio. Firstly, the Rayleigh-Ritz method is used to determine the natural frequencies of the cylinders vibrating axisymmetrically. The study is focused on cylindrical samples with diameter and length of similar magnitude so that the shear modulus and the Poisson ratio can be calculated simultaneously. Subsequently, the theoretical results for cylinders of slenderness ratio between 0.1 and 3 are analyzed in order to obtain the data required to determine the elastic constants from one of the two lowest measured natural frequencies and their quotient. The analysis of the results demonstrates that any slenderness ratio is useful in the calculation of the elastic constants, although in some cases the third natural frequency should be used. Furthermore, the influence of the length-diameter quotient on the sensitivity of the method is analyzed by evaluating the systematic uncertainties for both dynamic elastic constants. Finally, the method is experimentally tested by characterizing two steel cylinders with slenderness ratios 0.1 and 1, respectively. The results demonstrate that uncertainties for both Poisson ratio and the shear modulus are smaller when the slenderness ratio is 1.     

C 1 Quintic Splines on Type-4 Tetrahedral Partitions

Starting with a partition of a rectangular box into subboxes, it is shown how to construct a natural tetrahedral (type-4) partition and associated trivariate C ¹ quintic polynomial spline spaces with a variety of useful properties, including stable local bases and full approximation power. It is also shown how the spaces can be used to solve certain Hermite and Lagrange interpolation problems.     

Saddle point and generalized convex duality for multiobjective programming

In this paper we consider the dual problems for multiobjective programming with generalized convex functions. We obtain the weak duality and the strong duality. At last, we give an equivalent relationship between saddle point and efficient solution in multiobjective programming.     

FTIR measurements of CO2 line positions and intensities at high temperature in the 3700-3750 cm spectral region

Positions and intensities for 453 spectral lines in 12 rovibrational bands of ¹²C¹⁶O₂ have been determined between 3700 and 3750 cm⁻¹. At three temperatures (294, 500, and 698 K) eight spectra have been recorded at a pressure around 5 mbar and for an absorption path of about 190 cm⁻¹ using a Bomen DA3 Fourier transform spectrometer (4 × 10⁻³ cm⁻¹ resolution). Some of the measured positions and intensities can be compared with recent experimental results that validate the experimental set-up and the data analysis procedure. The results are also compared with the values listed in the HITRAN 2000 database. If the agreement is generally good, discrepancies are observed for three hot bands.
