Thermal multifragmentation in p + Au interactions at 2.16, 3.6 and 8.1 GeV incident energies

Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments has been studied for the collisions p + Au at 2.16, 3.6 and 8.1 GeV with the FASA setup. The mean IMF multiplicities for events with at least one IMF are equal to 1.7, 1.9 and 2.1 (±0.2) respectively. The multiplicity, charge distributions and kinetic energy spectra of IMF are described in the framework of a intranuclear cascade model followed by the statistical multifragmentation model. However, between the two parts of the calculation the excitation energies and the residual masses and charges are modified to take into account the losses during expansion. The results support a scenario of true thermal multifragmentation of a hot and expanded target spectator. Received: 15 December 1997 / Revised version: 24 April 1998     

Associated production of ϕ mesons and neutral kaons in the EXCHARM experiment

The features of the associated production of ? mesons and neutral kaons are studied on the basis of data obtained at the EXCHARM spectrometer (Serpukhov accelerator) in neutron—carbon interactions at neutron-beam energies in the range 20–70 GeV. The cross section for the inclusive associated production of ? and K ⁰/-K ⁰ is obtained. The fraction of processes allowed by the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule is estimated in the reactions of ?-meson inclusive production.     

Equilibrium transformations of meso-methylated thiacarbocyanine in aqueous solutions

Equilibrium processes of dimerization and H*- and J-aggregation of 3,3′-di-(γ-sulfopropyl)-5,5′-dichloro-9-methylthiacarbocyanine (TCC) in aqueous solutions have been investigated, and the thermodynamic parameters of the processes have been calculated. At least seven equilibrium forms of TCC have been found in aqueous solution for the first time. The absorption bands of the dye have been attributed to various forms (M, D, H*, and J) with allowance for existence of stereoisomers. The aggregation numbers for J- and H*-aggregates have calculated from the dependence of the absorption spectra on the dye concentration in solutions. It has been shown that the TCC aggregates consisting of a large number of molecules are formed by the “block” mechanism via intermediate steps of the formation of dimers, J- or H*-tetramers, octamers, etc.     

Effect of organic polyelectrolytes on H*-aggregation of <Emphasis Type="Italic">meso</Emphasis>-methyl-substituted thiacarbocyanine dyes

H*-Aggregation of anionic meso-methyl-substituted thiacarbocyanines of different structures has been studied in dilute aqueous solutions and in the presence of cationic organic polyelectrolytes. The thermodynamic parameters of the H*-aggregation from the trans-dimers have been determined. The thermodynamic equilibrium between two forms of the H*-aggregates in the presence of poly-N,N-dimethyl-N,N-diallylammonium chloride has been observed for the first time, and these forms have been assigned to H* _cis and H* _trans forms.     

Experimental Setup for Observation the Bose–Einstein Condensation of Magnons in Solid Antiferromagnets CsMnF3 and MnCO3

The Bose–Einstein condensation of magnons was observed in 1984 in superfluid ³He–B. The same phenomena should exist in solid magnetic systems. We describe here a partly digital experimental setup for studying solid antiferromagnets CsMnF₃ and MnCO₃ by pulse and continuous wave nuclear magnetic resonance. With this equipment, the Bose–Einstein condensation of magnons was observed for the first time in these single crystals.

Associated φΛ0 production in the EXCHARM experiment
