Room-temperature phosphorimetric determination of biogenic indole compounds adsorbed on a thin-layer chromatographic plate

A simple and sensitive method is described for the determination of biogenic indole compounds adsorbed on cellulose or alumina plates for thin-layer chromatography by room-temperature phosphorimetry. The optimum conditions were investigated for 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-acetic acid. The compounds are spotted on the plates, which are then sprayed successively with sodium citrate or sodium acetate, and sodiu iodide solutions. The plates are dried completely under a stream of dry nitrogen, and immediately dipped in molten paraffin. The phosphorescence is stable for at least 3 h even in moist air. The limits of detection for nine biogenic indole compounds tested are between 2 and 300 pmol per sample spot.     

Reactions of lithium tributyl heteroaryl borates with allylic bromides in the presence of copper(I) cyanide

The reaction of various lithium tributylheteroarylborates with allylic bromides in the presence of copper(I) cyanide furnished the regioselective allylation at the heteroaryl ring.     

Distribution behavior of some drug enantiomers in an aqueous two-phase system using counter-current extraction with protein

Summary The partial resolution of some drug enantiomers by counter-current extraction in an aqueous two-phase system using bovine serum albumin (BSA) or ovomucoid (OVM) as chiral discriminator is described. The phase system was prepared with dextran 40, polyethylene glycol and a protein. Ofloxacin (OFLX) enantiomer was well recognized by the BSA system, whereas the enantiomers of carvedilol (-blocker) and DG-5128 (a new oral hypoglycaemic drug) were hardly recognized by the OVM system. The distribution coefficients of (S)-, (R)- and rac-OFLX varied with pH. Good enantioselectivity for OFLX was obtained at relatively high pH ( pH 9). The crude optically enriched OFLX enantiomers were extracted from the aqueous fractions and finally purified by thin-layer chromatography.     

Flow analysis of silicate rocks for zirconium

A flow analysis system involving the on-line configuration of an anion-exchange column has been examined to enrich and determine trace concentrations of zirconium of several ppm to hundred ppm levels in silicate rocks and minerals. About 100 mg of sample is decomposed by fusion with a mixture of boric acid and lithium carbonate and taken up with 1M hydrochloric acid to a total of 100 ml. Depending upon the concentration of zirconium, either a 1- or 4-ml aliquot is introduced into an aqueous carrier stream, merged with sulphuric acid and passed through a small volume anion-exchange column. The enriched zirconium is then back eluted with hydrochloric acid, colour-developed with Arsenazo III, and detected spectrophotometrically at 665 nm.     

Heterocyclic effect for optical properties of naphthoquinone-based pigment: 2-methyl-3-heteroarylthio-1,4-naphthalenedione

Three novel naphthoquinone-based heterocyclic pigments, 2-methyl-3-[(1-methyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)thio-1,4-naphthalenedione, (4-methyl-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio-1,4-naphthalenedione, and (1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thio]-1,4-naphthalenedione, are synthesized, and their optical properties in both solution and solid states are investigated. Depending on the heteroarylthio ring in the pigment, variation in optical properties is observed, e.g. characteristic colours for each pigment in the solution and solid states. The achiral pigment containing the 1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl ring exhibits a chiral space group and a CD signal in the solid state.     

A novel polyaddition of bifunctional acetylenes containing electron-withdrawing groups. III. Synthesis of polymers having β-alkoxyenoate moieties by the reaction of internal diynes with diols

Tri-n-butylphosphine-catalyzed polyadditions of activated internal diynes (bifunctional β-substituted propiolate, 1B and 1C ) with diols are described. Although a terminal bispropiolate ( 1A ) could not produce soluble polymers, with secondary diols, the polyaddition of 1B or 1C with primary as well as secondary diols gave corresponding polymers ( 3 , only composed of E isomeric units) in high yield. The rate of the present polyaddition was estimated by a model reaction of benzyl alcohol with methyl 2-heptynoate ( 4 ), from which the introduction of alkyl groups at the β-position of propiolate moieties was found to decrease the rate of the reaction by 80 times. Furthermore, the rate-determining step on this polymerization system was speculated to be a protonation step of zwitterionic intermediates with protons from diols. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Novel indoline dye tetrabutylammonium carboxylates attached with a methyl group on the cyclopentane ring for dye-sensitized solar cells

(2R,3aR,8bR)- and (2S,3aS,8bS)-2-Methyl indoline dye tetrabutylammonium carboxylates exhibited the highest conversion efficiency among four regio and stereo isomers. These indoline dyes also showed higher conversion efficiency than DN350.     

Alkylation‐, Heating‐, and Doping‐Induced Emission Enhancement of a Polyaromatic Tube in the Solid State

A polyaromatic tube with a subnanometer‐sized cavity was efficiently prepared on a gram‐scale through the stereo‐controlled cyclotrimerization of a diphenylanthracene derivative as a key step. The facile exterior alkylation of the polyaromatic framework leads to a moderately fluorescent tube (R=‐OC₁₀H₂₁; Φ_F=20 %) in the solid state. The emission intensity of the solid‐state alkyl‐substituted tube is remarkably enhanced upon heating (up to 1.6 times, Φ_F=31 %) as well as doping with fluorescent dyes (up to 4.2 times, Φ_F=83 %) through efficient energy transfer.     

Steroidal glycosides from the bulbs of Camassia leichtlinii and their cytotoxic activities.

Phytochemical analysis of the bulbs of Camassia leichtlinii (Liliaceae) resulted in the isolation of six new spirostanol saponins, a new furostanol saponin, a cholestane glucoside, and four known steroidal saponins. The structures of the new saponins were determined by detailed analysis of their spectral data, including two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy, and by the results of hydrolytic cleavage. Cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds against human oral squamous cell carcinoma (HSC-2) cells and normal human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) are also reported.
