Molecular dynamics simulations of nanopore processing in a graphene sheet by using gas cluster ion beam

The formation of a nanopore in a graphene sheet by collision with an argon cluster is simulated using molecular dynamics method. The number of removed carbon atoms and the size of the nanopore are obtained as a function of the kinetic energy of the cluster. In contrast to nanosculpting with a monomer ion beam, the size of the nanopore that is created by one shot of the cluster varies because of the variety of atom configuration. However, the mean size of the nanopore can be controlled over a wide range only by changing the kinetic energy of the cluster. This implies that the cleaning and processing of the graphene sheet may be realized simultaneously by changing the acceleration energy of the cluster.     

Compositional variation in Si-rich SiGe single crystals grown by multi-component zone melting method using Si seed and source crystals

The effect of the supply of depleted Si solute elements on the compositional variation in the Si-rich SiGe bulk crystals was studied using the method which was used to grow Ge-rich SiGe single crystals with a uniform composition. By selecting the proper pulling rate, we can obtain Si-rich Si_1−xGe_x bulk crystals with uniform composition of x=0.1 without using the supply mechanism of depleted Si solute elements. When the supply mechanism of Si solute elements was used, the initial composition in Si-rich SiGe crystals can be much more easily determined by controlling the growth temperature than that in Ge-rich crystals because the Si seed crystal is not melted down. The supply of Si solute elements is very effective to change the compositional variation even for Si-rich SiGe crystals.     

Scale-model experiments of moving fire whirl over a line fire

A fire whirl, observed during a wildland fire in Brazil in 2010, occurred over a narrow but long line fire and moved along the line fire at nearly a constant speed. There appeared to be no mountains, tall buildings or trees near the scene, indicating that the fire whirl was generated merely by the interaction between the line fire and background wind. Scale-model experiments having different line fire configurations were designed and performed to reconstruct the above-mentioned Brazil fire whirl. Moving fire whirls were successfully reconstructed during the scale-model experiments, the mechanism and conditions of which are discussed herein.     

Enhanced surface sensitivity in secondary ion mass spectrometric analysis of organic thin films using size‐selected Ar gas‐cluster ion projectiles

A size‐selected argon (Ar) gas‐cluster ion beam (GCIB) was applied to the secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) of a 1,4‐didodecylbenzene (DDB) thin film. The samples were also analyzed by SIMS using an atomic Ar⁺ ion projectile and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Compared with those in the atomic‐Ar⁺ SIMS spectrum, the fragment species, including siloxane contaminants present on the sample surface, were enhanced several hundred times in the Ar gas‐cluster SIMS spectrum. XPS spectra during beam irradiation indicate that the Ar GCIB sputters contaminants on the surface more effectively than the atomic Ar⁺ ion beam. These results indicate that a large gas‐cluster projectile can sputter a much shallower volume of organic material than small projectiles, resulting in an extremely surface‐sensitive analysis of organic thin films. Highly diastereoselective synthesis of tetrahydrobenzofuran derivatives by palladium-catalyzed reaction of propargylic esters with substituted β-dicarbonyl compounds

Reactions of propargylic esters with 2-substituted cyclohexane-1,3-diones and 2-oxocyclohexanecarboxylic esters in the presence of palladium catalyst are described. Substituted tetrahydrobenzofuran derivatives having a quaternary carbon stereocenter were synthesized in a highly diastereoselective manner.     

Synthesis of networked polymers by copolymerization of monoepoxy‐substituted lithium sulfonylimide and diepoxy‐substituted poly(ethylene glycol), and their properties

Networked polymers that had poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) chains and lithium sulfonylimide salt structures were prepared by curing a mixture of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and lithium 3‐glycidyloxypropanesulfonyl‐trifluoromethanesulfonylimide with poly(ethylene glycol) bis(3‐aminopropyl) terminated. The obtained flexible self‐standing networked polymer films showed high thermal and mechanical stability with relatively high ionic conductivity. The room temperature ionic conductivity under a dry condition was in the range of 10^?5 ～ 10^?4 S m^?1, which is one order of magnitude higher than the corresponding networked polymers having lithium sulfonate salt structures (10^?6 ～ 10^?5 S m^?1). The film sample became swollen by immersing in propylene carbonate (PC) or PC solution of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI). The sample swollen in PC showed higher ionic conductivity (7.2 × 10^?3 S m^?1 at room temperature), and the sample swollen in 1.0 M LiTFSI/PC showed much higher ionic conductivity (8.2 × 10^?1 S m^?1 at room temperature). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. F center production in undoped CaF2 crystals by neutron irradiation at low temperature

We observed that F centers were induced in undoped CaF₂ crystals irradiated by neutrons at 18 K.
