Indium-Catalyzed C−F Bond Transformation through Oxymetalation/β-Fluorine Elimination to Access Fluorinated Isocoumarins

Fluorinated heterocycles have attracted much attention in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. Many strategies have already been developed to achieve the synthesis of fluorinated heterocycles. Formidable challenges remain, however, in the synthesis of fluorinated isocoumarin derivatives that are among the most alluring structural motifs. Herein, the indium-catalyzed C−F bond transformation of 2-(2,2-difluorovinyl) benzoates is reported, which are readily accessible compounds, to give a diverse array of fluorinated isocoumarins. The present reaction proceeds smoothly using inexpensive reagents: a catalytic amount of indium salt in the presence of zinc salt. A theoretical calculation of potential energy profiles showed that the reaction consists of oxymetalation with the elimination of alkyl halide and the β-fluorine elimination.

The alkaline treatment of the pyridinium salts, readily available from the S-alkylations of 3-amino-4-(1-pyridinio)thiophene-5-thiolates with various alkyl halides, in chloroform at room temperature afforded the corresponding thieno[3',4':4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives in low to moderate yields via the intramolecular cyclization of the resulting 1,5-dipoles followed by the aromatization of the primary cycloadducts. Interestingly, the reactions using unsymmetrical 3-amino-4-[1-(3-methylpyridinio)]thiophene-5-thiolates afforded only 8-methylthieno[3',4':4,5]imidazo[1,2-a]pyridines and the other 6-methyl derivatives were not formed at all. In addition the isolation of a byproduct in the condensation reaction of pyridinium salt with the solvent (CHCl?) is also discussed.     

Characterization of host-guest complexes of cucurbit[n]uril (n = 6, 7) by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

When an intramolecular cavity exists in a molecule, it can trap another chemical species to form a host-guest complex. We examine the formation of such an inclusion complex with cucurbit[n]uril (CBn, n = 6, 7) as the host to trap alkali metal or ammonium ions as the guest, by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The results show that the inclusion complexes are formed between the three-dimensional cylinder of CBn hosts and the guest cations. Selectivity of the complex formation is dependent both on (1) ion-dipole interactions between the cylindrical portal of the CBn hosts and the guest cations and (2) the hydrophobic interactions at the inner cavity of CBn.     

Biologically active glycosides from asteroidea, 42. Isolation and structure of a new biologically active ganglioside molecular species from the starfish Asterina pectinifera

A ganglioside molecular species GP-3 (1) has been obtained from the water-soluble lipid fraction of the chloroform/methanol extract of the starfish Asterina pectinifera. The structure of the ganglioside has been determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence. Compound 1 represents new ganglioside molecular species possessing two moles of sialic acids at the inner part of the sugar moiety. Partial hydrolysis by hot water and an enzymatic hydrolysis by means of endoglycoceramidase (EGCase) have proved useful for structure elucidation of the complex oligosaccharide moiety. Moreover, 1 exhibits neuritogenic activity toward the rat pheochromocytoma cell line, PC-12 cells, in the presence of nerve growth factor (NGF).     

Total synthesis and stereochemistry of the antitumor antibiotic PD 113,271

[Structure: see text] A total synthesis of PD 113,271, an antitumor fostriecin analogue isolated from Streptomyces pulveraceus, was achieved by the chiral pool approach starting with D-galactose and L-tartaric acid. The synthesis of PD 113,271 led to unambiguous assignment of the relative and absolute stereochemistry of its stereocenters.     

Guaranteed error bounds for finite element approximations of noncoercive elliptic problems and their applications

In this paper, we discuss with guaranteed a priori and a posteriori error estimates of finite element approximations for not necessarily coercive linear second order Dirichlet problems. Here, ‘guaranteed’ means we can get the error bounds in which all constants included are explicitly given or represented as a numerically computable form. Using the invertibility condition of concerning elliptic operator, guaranteed a priori and a posteriori error estimates are formulated. This kind of estimates plays essential and important roles in the numerical verification of solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems. Several numerical examples that confirm the actual effectiveness of the method are presented.     

Preparation of 3-bromo-2-methylfuran and 4-bromo-2-methylfuran

4-endo-5-exo-Dibromo-3-methyl-3,6-endo-oxyperhydrophthalic anhydride 3b and 4-exo-5-endo-dibro-mo-3-methyl-3,6-endo-oxyperhydrophtbalic anhydride 3c were isolated from the bromo-adducts of 3-methyl-3,6-endo-oxy-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride 2. When 3b or 3c was heated in quinoline, only 3-bromo-2-methylfuran 4 was obtained from 3b and only 4-bromo-2-methylfuran 5 from 3c.     

High-performance liquid chromatographic detector based on near-infrared semiconductor laser fluorimetry

Three polymethine dyes, which fluoresce at 780–820 nm, are separated by reversed-phase chromatography and detected fluorimetrically with a semiconductor laser for excitation. The detection limit for anhydro-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl-1,1′-bis(4-sulfomethyl)-4,5,4′,5′-dibenzoindotricarbocyanine hydroxide (sodium salt) is 0.3 pg, which is almost three orders of magnitude better than the value obtained by conventional fluorimetry.     

Stochastic equations on compact groups in discrete negative time

In this paper a stochastic equation on compact groups in discrete negative time is studied. The diagonal group action on the extreme points of solutions is proved to be transitive by means of the coupling method. This result is applied to generalize Yor’s work which is closely related to Tsirelson’s stochastic differential equation and to give criteria for existence of a strong solution and for uniqueness in law.
