100-TW sub-20-fs Ti:sapphire laser system operating at a 10-Hz repetition rate

We developed a compact three-stage Ti:sapphire amplifier laser system that produced peak power in excess of 100 TW for a pulse duration of less than 19 fs and an average power of 19 W at a 10-Hz repetition rate. A final 40-mm-diameter Ti:sapphire amplifier is pumped by a Nd:YAG master-oscillator-power-amplifier system that produces ~7-J output of 532-nm radiation. The spatial beam quality is approximately 2 times diffraction limited for the full amplified compressed output pulse. With f/3 optics, this system should therefore be capable of producing a focused intensity of ~3x10(20) W/cm(2) .     

Telluroxide elimination by direct oxidation of alkyl phenyl telluride

Treatment of sec-alkyl phenyl tellurides, except for the cyclohexyl system, with m-chloroperbenzoic acid(MCPBA) in diethyl ether readily afforded the corresponding olefins in good yields presumably via telluroxide elimination together with small amounts of alcohols and ketones. In the pri-alkyl and cyclohexyl cases the adducts between MCPBA and the tellurides were isolated as stable organotellurium(IV) compounds which gave similar elimination products by neat pyrolysis at 220–2500°C.     

Novel approach for catalytic cyclopropanation of alkenes via (2-furyl)carbene complexes from 1-benzoyl-cis-1-buten-3-yne

The reaction of conjugated ene-yne-ketones 3 with a variety of alkenes in the presence of a catalytic amount of Cr(CO)(5)(THF) at room temperature gives (2-furyl)cyclopropanes in good yields. These cyclopropanation reactions proceed via (2-furyl)carbene-chromium intermediates 4 formed in situ from ene-yne-ketones 3. Late transition metals, such as [RuCl(2)(CO)(3)](2), [RhCl(cod)](2), PdCl(2), and PtCl(2), also catalyze effectively the cyclopropanation of styrene with 3.     

Anisotropic phase separation of polymer blends induced by polarization-selective photoisomerization

Anisotropic phase separation of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PS/PVME) blends was induced by photoisomerization of trans-stilbene moieties labeled on the PS chains (abbreviated hereafter as PSS chains) using linearly polarized light. As temperature increases, the anisotropy becomes weaker and eventually disappears at 10°C above the glass transition of the PSS component. It was concluded that the elastic stress associated with the spatial distribution of the reaction is responsible for this morphological anisotropy.     

Synthesis of regiocontrolled polymer having 2-naphthol unit by CuCl-amine catalyzed oxidative coupling polymerization

Regiocontrolled polymer (2) having 2-naphthol unit was prepared by oxidative coupling polymerization of bis(2-naphthol) (1). Polymerizations were conducted in dichloromethane in the presence of [di-μ-hydroxo-bis(N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine)copper(II)] chloride [CuCl(OH)TMEDA] under air at room temperature, producing polymers with number-average molecular weights up to 12,000. The structure of polymer 2 was characterized by 270 MHz ¹H–NMR and 68.5 MHz ¹³C–NMR spectroscopies and was estimated to consist almost completely of 1,1′-linkage. The polymer was readily soluble in polar aprotic solvents and tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis of polymer 2 showed 10% weight loss at 450°C in nitrogen. Photoluminescence dynamics of coupled quantum dots

We have investigated effects of the strain-compensating spacer layer on photoluminescence (PL) properties of excitons in the multilayered self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs). The PL decay time of excitons in the sample with a thin spacer layer is longer than that with a thick spacer layer. This is attributed to the lowering of the oscillator strengths owing to reduction of the overlap integral between the electrons and holes envelope functions because of spatially extended electron envelope functions in the growth direction. In addition, the PL intensity of the transverse-magnetic mode in the sample with the thinner spacer layer has been found to be enhanced in the polarized PL measurement from the cleaved edge surface of the samples. These results indicate the possibility of QDs connecting along the growth direction via penetration of the electron envelope function.     

Integral representation of solutions to Fuchsian system and Heun's equation

We obtain integral representations of solutions to special cases of the Fuchsian system of differential equations and Heun's differential equation. In particular, we calculate the monodromy of solutions to the Fuchsian equation that corresponds to Picard's solution of the sixth Painlevé equation, and to Heun's equation.     

Novel frequency dependence of dielectric biaxiality of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals

The frequency dependence of the dielectric biaxiality of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals (SSFLCs) was studied. The principal values of the dielectric tensor ε₁, ε₂ and ε₃ were measured by the MOM (molecular orientational model) method. Three dielectric permittivities were measured for each of two samples. These were the permittivity of the homeotropic cell and the permittivity of the planar homogeneous cell with and without the DC bias. Then the dielectric tensor components were calculated based on the molecular orientational models. We present the theory and experimental procedure of the MOM method. Measurements have been performed on Merck FLC compound SCE-8. The following novel dielectric behaviour was observed, as the DC bias voltage was increased the dielectric permittivity of the planar homogeneous cell decreased at the low frequencies (∼ 1 kHz) while increased at the high frequencies (10kHz ∼). The sign of the dielectric biaxiality ∂εε (= ε₂ - ε₁) inverted around 1 kHz, being negative at low frequencies and positive at high frequencies. The roles of the biaxiality on the dielectric behaviour of SSFLC cells are discussed.     

The biosynthesis of sorbicillinoids in Trichoderma sp. USF-2690: prospect for the existence of a common precursor to sorbicillinol and 5-epihydroxyvertinolide, a new sorbicillinoid member

Biosynthetic feeding studies of [1-¹³C], [2-¹³C], and [1,2-¹³C₂]-labeled sodium acetates into 5-epihydroxyvertinolide, a new sorbicillinoid, gives an incorporation pattern that proves the γ-lactone ring formation associated with a ring cleavage reaction of the precursor, a potential intermediate of sorbicillinol biosynthesis.
