Nonameric porphyrin assemblies--formation and intra-assembly energy transfer reactions

The nonameric porphyrin assemblies constructed with the series of free base tetraphenylporphyrins Pn having four pyrazine moieties linked with alkyl chains of different lengths, (CH2)n (n = 1, 5, 9, 17, 30), and dimeric [meso-tetrakis(2-carboxy-4-nonylphenyl)porphyrinato]zinc(II), ZnP2, show the effective light-collection effect and the typical Forster-type energy transfer from ZnP2 to Pn.     

Photochemical regulation of the activity of an endonuclease BamHI using an azobenzene moiety incorporated site-selectively into the dimer interface

Endonuclease BamHI mutants having an azophenylalanine residue in the dimer interface (azoAla-BamHI) were synthesized; while the activity was almost suppressed using trans-azoAla-BamHI, the cis-isomer generated with photoirradiation recovered its intrinsic activity.     

Dark-state imaging for two-dimensional mapping of a magnetic field

By imaging the dark states that are due to coherent population trapping in Na atomic vapor, we have succeeded in depicting a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. Highly resolved dark lines represent cross sections of the surfaces of constant magnetic fields, and they agree well with the predicted hyperfine Zeeman splitting and the two-photon selection rules of the Na atom. Mapping was made two dimensionally in real time, but extension to three dimensions is straightforward. Furthermore, unlike the previous techniques based on optical pumping, this method can be used for any magnetic-field directions.     

Coexistence of solvated electrons and solvent valence anions in negatively charged acetonitrile clusters, (CH3CN)-n(n=10-100)

Anion photoelectron spectroscopy of acetonitrile cluster anions, (CH3CN)(-)(n) (n=10-100), successfully demonstrates the competitive coexistence of two different anionic species: a solvated electron and a solvent-bound valence anion. The distinctly different nature of these anions is revealed by hole-burning-type photoelectron spectroscopy and relative photodetachment cross section measurements. This unusual coexistence is attributed to the closely lying nature of their anionic states at just the number of solvent molecules sufficient to almost complete the first solvation layer.     

Direct observations of freeze-etching processes of ice-embedded biomembranes by atomic force microscopy

We have fabricated a cryogenic atomic force microscope that is designed for structural investigation of freeze-fractured biological specimens. The apparatus is operated in liquid nitrogen gas at atmospheric pressure. Freeze-fracturing, freeze-etching and subsequent imaging are carried out in the same chamber, so that the surface topography of a fractured plane is easily visualized without ice contamination. A controlled superficial sublimation of volatile molecules allows us to obtain three-dimensional views of ultrastructures of biological membranes.     

Signal denoising and baseline correction by discrete wavelet transform for microchip capillary electrophoresis

Signal denoising and baseline correction using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) are described for microchip capillary electrophoresis (MCE). DWT was performed on an electropherogram describing a separation of nine tetramethylrohodamine-5-isothiocyanate labeled amino acids, following MCE with laser-induced fluorescence detection, using Daubechies 5 wavelet at a decomposition level of 6. The denoising efficiency was compared with, and proved to be superior to, other commonly used denoising techniques such as Fourier transform, Savitzky-Golay smoothing and moving average, in terms of noise removal and peak preservation by directly visual inspection. Novel strategies for baseline correction were proposed, with a special interest in baseline drift that frequently occurred in chromatographic and electrophoretic separations.     

Limit theorems in financial market models

Invariance principle states that a scaled simple random walk converges to the standard Brownian motion.In this article, we present a discrete time stochastic process, which reflects a microstructure of market dynamics, and prove a convergence to a scaling limit process with a drift term and a jump term. These terms are derived from a macroscopic condition on volumes traded in some time intervals. The mathematical tools for obtaining our results are Dobrushin-Hryniv theory and the method of cluster expansion developed in mathematical studies of statistical mechanics.     

Influence of intramolecular vibrations in charge redistribution at the pentacene-graphite interface

We have investigated the relation between the intramolecular vibrational modes of pentacene and the charge redistribution at the pentacene-graphite interface by using high-resolution electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy. The three main vibrational peaks shift to lower energies as the pentacene film thickness decreases. In order to discuss this energy shift, we have calculated the vibrational energies of a free pentacene molecule by changing its charge state. We have also calculated the vibrational energies of a pentacene molecule adsorbed on a graphite sheet by changing the pentacene-graphite distance. Taking the experimental and calculation results into account, we conclude that the observed energy shifts result from an intramolecular charge redistribution. The present results indicate that the effect of an intramolecular charge redistribution is essential to discuss the origin of an energy shift observed in a vibrational study of an organic molecule/substrate interface.     

Velocity vector measurement based on correlation process between low coherence interference outputs

Velocity vector measurement by using fiber-optic low coherence interferometers is proposed and demonstrated. The interference outputs between the reference and backscattered light from the probing points in the flow are correlation processed. The probing points can be specified and are set on the x-, y-, and z-axis in the flow by using the fiber-optic low coherence interferometers. The direction (angles from each axis) and absolute value of the flow velocity can be measured from peak positions of correlations.
