Regioselective allylmetalation of allenes with tetraallylmanganate or allylmagnesium chloride under MnCl2 catalysis

[reaction: see text] Treatment of allenes with tetraallylmanganate provides allylated products with high regioselectivity. A catalytic amount of MnCl(2) combined with allylmagnesium chloride also achieves efficient allylmetalation of allenes. The resulting alkenylmagnesium species react with various electrophiles. In the presence of molecular oxygen, the alkenylmagnesium undergoes diallylation reaction. A cyclization reaction of 1,2,6-heptatriene with tetraallylmanganate is also described.     

Crystal structure of ethene-/α-olefin copolymers with various long comonomers (C8–C26)

Ethene-/α-olefin copolymers having a wide range of comonomers between 8 and 26 carbon atoms in length were characterized by wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). It was found that the crystallinities for the shorter comonomers (C₈, C₁₂) matched fairly well with the crystallinities from DSC and volumetric measurements, while for the longer comonomers (C₁₈, C₂₆) distinct differences between the three methods were found. This was explained by the presence of an additional crystalline phase of the side chains slightly deforming the amorphous peak.     

Magnetic circular dichroism of [Co/Pd] and [CoB/Pd] multilayered films

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at the Co L_2,3-edge of [Co/Pd]₂₀ and [CoB/Pd]₂₀ multilayered films, which were fabricated at 260 °C with different magnetic layer thicknesses (δ), have been measured. The lineshapes of XAS–MCD show that the electronic state of Co 3d of the films hardly changes even when sputtered at higher temperatures. The expectation values of orbital and spin angular momentum (〈L_z〉 and 〈S_z〉) are estimated using the sum rule, and it is found that 〈L_z〉/〈S_z〉 in δ<0.5 nm is larger than that in δ>0.5 nm.     

Irreversible helix rearrangement from Cis‐transoid to Cis‐cisoid in poly(p‐n‐hexyloxyphenylacetylene) induced by heat‐treatment in solid phase

Polymerization of p‐n‐hexyloxyphenylacetylene (pHPA) by using a [Rh(norbornadine)Cl]₂‐triethylamine catalyst was carried out at room temperature to afford stereoregular helical poly(p‐n‐hexyloxyphenylacetylene)s (PpHPAs). When ethanol and n‐hexane were used as polymerization solvents, a bright yellow PpHPAs, poly( Y ) with M_n = 8.5 × 10⁴ and its purple red polymer, poly( R ) with M_n = 5.3 × 10⁴ were obtained in 95% yields and 84% yields, respectively. Diffuse reflective UV–vis spectra of poly( Y ) and poly( R ) in solid phase showed different broad absorption peaks at 445 and 575 nm, respectively. X‐Ray diffraction patterns of poly( Y ) and poly( R ) showed typical columnar structures assignable to cis‐transoid and cis‐cisoid structures, respectively, which were also supported by molecule mechanics calculation. Poly( Y ) was irreversibly transformed to a reddish‐black polymer, poly( Y‐B ), which columnar diameter was nearly the same as that of poly( R ). Further, poly( Y ) showed an exothermic peak in the differential scanning calorimetry trace at 80 °C for 1 h in N₂ gas. Thus, these findings suggest a thermally irreversible rearrangement from an unstable cis‐transoid form, poly( Y ) with a stretched cis‐transoid helix to a stable cis‐cisoid form, poly( R ), with a contracted cis‐cisoid helix in the solid phase to give poly( Y → B ) with the cis‐cisoid form. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Permeability control in electro‐sensitive microcapsules with immobilized ferroelectric liquid crystalline segments

Nylon‐polystyrene microcapsules with immobilized ferroelectric liquid crystalline segments were prepared, and permeability control of an encapsulated core material was investigated under an external electric field. A ferroelectric liquid crystal monomer possessing both mesogenicity and chirality responded effectively to the external electrical field. Permeation of the material (oxprenolol) contained in the inner aqueous core of the microcapsules was enhanced under a weak electric field (2 V). Furthermore, the permeability of oxprenolol did not depend on the external electric field in the absence of the ferroelectric liquid crystal segments. To clarify the controlled‐release mechanism of the core material, the light transmittance of the polymer membranes was quantitatively evaluated under an external electric field using a handmade polarized light transmittance apparatus. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Interorganellar DNA transfer in wheat: dynamics and phylogenetic origin

A homology search of wheat chloroplast (ct) and mitochondrial (mt) genomes identified 54 ctDNA segments that have homology with 66 mtDNA segments. The mtDNA segments were classified according to their origin: orthologs (prokaryotic origin), xenologs (interorganellar DNA transfer origin) and paralogs (intraorganellar DNA amplification origin). The 66 mtDNA sequences with homology to ctDNA segments included 14 paralogs, 18 orthologs and 34 xenologs. Analysis of the xenologs indicated that the DNA transfer occurred unidirectionally from the ct genome to the mt genome. The evolutionary timing of each interorganellar DNA transfer that generated a xenolog was estimated. This analysis showed that 2 xenologs originated early in green plant evolution, 4 in angiosperm evolution, 3 in monocotyledon evolution, 9 during cereal diversification and 8 in the evolution of wheat. Six other xenologs showed recurrent transfer from the ct to mt genomes in more than one taxon. The two remaining xenologs were uninformative on the evolutionary timing of their transfer. The wheat mt nad9 gene was found to be chimeric, consisting of the cereal nad9 gene and its 291 bp 5'-flanking region that included a 58 bp xenolog of the ct-ndhC origin.     

Regio- and stereoselective synthesis of 1-aryl-1-thio-2-thiophosphinylethene derivatives via a radical process

Radical additions of S-thiophosphinyl dithiocarbonate to terminal aromatic alkynes afford (E)-1-aryl-1-thio-2-thiophosphinylethene derivatives regio- and stereoselectively in high yields. The transformations of the products are also described.
