Dynamics of Spontaneous Electric Field Domains in a Two-Dimensional Electron System Irradiated by Microwaves and the Conductance of a Donor Layer

The temperature dependence of the switching frequency of a microwave-induced spontaneous electric field forming a domain structure and the conductance of a doping layer that provides electrons to the two-dimensional electron system have been measured on samples fabricated from the same GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Both quantities have been found to obey the thermally activated dependence (Arrhenius law) with close activation energies. This result indicates a relation between the quantities and confirms a hypothesis that the observed dynamics of the domain structure originates from the dynamical screening of the spontaneous electric field of domains by charges in the doping layer.     

Effect of anionic surfactant on alginate‐chitosan polyelectrolyte multilayer thickness

Alginate and chitosan are among the most common biopolyelectrolytes. Surfactants can be included in alginate and chitosan formulations in order to improve their physical and functional properties. In the present study, the effect of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on alginate‐chitosan polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) films is reported for the first time. Layer‐by‐layer deposition technique was employed to prepare the PEM samples and the samples were characterized by ellipsometry, X‐ray reflectivity, atomic force microscopy, and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation. Incorporation of SDS into PEM formulations increased the film thickness and an increased adsorption behavior between alginate and chitosan layers are observed. Since the concentration of SDS was below its critical micelle concentration, no micelle formation was expected and hydrophobic‐hydrophobic interaction between alginate and SDS might be the main reason. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Properties of two amide‐based hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography columns

Hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography is a separation technique suitable for the separation of moderately and highly polar compounds. Various stationary phases (SPs) for hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography are commercially available. While the SPs based on the same type of ligand are available from different providers, they can display a distinct retention characteristics and separation selectivity. The current work is focused on characterization and comparison of the separation systems of two amide‐based HPLC columns from two producers, i.e. XBridge Amide column and TSK gel Amide‐80 column. Several characterization procedures (tests) were used to investigate the differences between these columns. The chromatographic behavior of selected analytes indicates that multimodal interactions are responsible for retention and separation on these columns. Multiple testing approaches were used in order to reveal subtle differences between the SPs. Both amide‐based columns showed certain differences in retention, selectivity, and plate counts. Based on the tests used in this study, we conclude that the investigated columns provide a different degree of H‐bonding interactions.     

HPLC Method for Chiral Separation and Quantification of Antidepressant Citalopram and Its Precursor Citadiol

HPLC method enabling chiral separation and determination of citalopram (CIT), a widely used antidepressant, and its synthetic precursor citadiol in one analysis was developed and validated. Moreover, supercritical fluid chromatography was also tested and was proved to be less effective for this separation purpose. The optimized HPLC system was composed of Chiralcel OD-H column and n-hexane/propane-2-ol/triethylamine 96/4/0.1 (v/v/v) as mobile phase, column temperature 25 °C, flow rate 1.0 mL min^?1, UV detection at 250 nm. The effects of amount of propane-2-ol, triethylamine addition, and temperature on enantioselectivity and resolution of the enantiomers were evaluated. The method was found to be suitable for determination of the enantiomeric purity of CIT in bulk drugs. Enantiomers of CIT were determined in two commercially available pharmaceuticals.     

Vapor pressure of selected aliphatic alcohols by ebulliometry. Part 2

Vapor pressures of six pentanols, 2-methyl-1-butanol (CAS Registry Number 137-32-6), 2-methyl-2-butanol (CAS Registry Number 75-85-4), 3-methyl-1-butanol (CAS Registry Number 123-51-3), 3-methyl-2-butanol (CAS Registry Number 598-75-4), 2-pentanol (CAS Registry Number 6032-29-7) and 3-pentanol (CAS Registry Number 584-02-1), were measured by the precision ebulliometry over an approximate pressure range from 9 to 99 kPa. The absolute uncertainties in pressure and temperature are estimated to be less than or equal to 7 Pa and 0.02 K, respectively. The results are represented by the Antoine equation and compared with available literature data.     

Quantum oscillations in p-type inversion layers of (111) and (100) silicon field effect transistors

For the first time Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations have been observed in p-type inversion layers of (111) and (100) silicon field effect transistors. For both orientations a single electric subband was found. The effective mass of the surface carriers was determined from the temperature dependence of the oscillations, for (111) surfaces as a function of the surface electric field. At low gate voltages spin splitting of the Landau levels was resolved.     

Demonstration of a 1/4-cycle phase shift in the radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance in GaAs/AlGaAs devices

We examine the phase and the period of the radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance in GaAs/AlGaAs devices utilizing in situ magnetic field calibration by electron spin resonance of diphenyl-picryl-hydrazal. The results confirm a f-independent 1/4-cycle phase shift with respect to the hf=j variant Planck's over 2pi omega(c) condition for j>/=1, and they also suggest a small ( approximately 2%) reduction in the effective mass ratio, m(*)/m, with respect to the standard value for GaAs/AlGaAs devices.     

Interferometric determination of the s and d-wave scattering amplitudes in 87Rb

We demonstrate an interference method to determine the low-energy elastic scattering amplitudes of a quantum gas. We linearly accelerate two ultracold atomic clouds up to energies of 1.2 mK and observe the collision halo by direct imaging in free space. From the interference between s- and d- partial waves in the differential scattering pattern we extract the corresponding phase shifts. The method does not require knowledge of the atomic density. This allows us to infer accurate values for the s- and d-wave scattering amplitudes from the zero-energy limit up to the first Ramsauer minimum using only the van der Waals C6 coefficient as theoretical input. For the 87Rb triplet potential, the method reproduces the scattering length with an accuracy of 6%.     

Frequency tuning of the whispering-gallery modes of silica microspheres for cavity quantum electrodynamics and spectroscopy

We have tuned the whispering-gallery modes of a fused-silica microresonator over nearly 1 nm at 800 nm, i.e., over half a free spectral range, or 10(6) linewidths of the resonator. This result has been achieved by use of a new method based on the stretching of a two-stem microsphere. We describe devices that will permit new cavity QED experiments with this high- Q optical resonator when it is desirable to optimize its coupling to emitters with given transition frequencies. The demonstrated tuning capability is compatible with both UHV and low-temperature operation, which should be useful for future experiments with laser-cooled atoms or single quantum dots.     

Modification of the intersubband excitation spectrum in a two-dimensional electron system under a perpendicular magnetic field

Under an external magnetic field, new branches of spin- and charge-density waves have been studied in a quasi-two-dimensional electron system whose ground state has more than one Landau level occupied by electrons. These collective excitations can be treated as manifestations of the multicomponent nature of the electron system in magnetic field, whereas the occupied Landau levels should be associated with degrees of freedom.
