Structures of Bismuth(III) Complexonates in Aqueous Solutions Studied by 1H NMR Method

Aqueous solutions of bismuth(III) nitrilotriacetates BiNta · 2H₂O and M₃Bi(Nta)₂ ·nH₂O (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs, NH₄, CN₃H₆, n = 0–4) and the K[Bi(Edta)(Tu)₂] complex (Edta^4– is the anion of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, Tu is thiocarbamide) are studied by the ¹H NMR method at room temperature in the pH interval from 2 to 11. The formation of two types of bismuth nitrilotriacetate complexes in solutions is established. They are characterized by the presence (type 1) or absence (type 2) of the Bi–N bond. Their ratio, depending on the composition and pH of the solution, is determined. The K[Bi(Edta)(Tu)₂] compound in solutions occurs as one form. The pH values at which the substance begins to decompose are determined for each compound.

Summary In the determination of alkoxy groups, hydriodic acid may be replaced by a mixture of potassium iodide and orthophosphoric acid.

Synthesis, structures and some chemical and electrochemical properties of E-1,2-diferrocenyl-3-methylthioprop-2-enone and its ketals

2,3-Diferrocenyl-1-methylthiocyclopropenylium iodide reacts with water, metal alkoxides, phenolates and with alcohols in the presence of Et₃N to give E-1,2-diferrocenyl-3-methylthioprop-2-enone or its ketals. Their structures were established based on data from ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The mechanistic aspects of these reactions are discussed. Electrochemical properties of 8 and 13b have been studied. The compounds present two oxidation processes (I-II), attributed to the oxidations of the ferrocenes groups, E^0′(I), E^0′(II), ΔE^0′(II-I) and comproportionation constant K_com are reported.     

Photochemical transformations of 3-alkyl-3-ferrocenylcyclopropenes

Photolysis of 3-ferrocenyl-3-methyl- and 3-ferrocenyl-3-isopropylcyclopropenes was studied. Sensitized irradiation (triplet excitation) afforded [2+2]-cycloaddition products, viz., tricyclohexane derivatives. Direct irradiation (singlet excitation) of methyl-substituted ferrocenylcyclopropene gave rise to 2-ferrocenylbut-1-en-3-yne and trans-2-ferrocenylbut-2-ene. The isopropyl analog was converted into 1-ferrocenyl-4,4-dimethylcyclobutene. The reaction of this cyclopropene with 2-ferrocenyl-3-methylbut-1-ene afforded 1,3-diferrocenyl-3-isopropyl-6,6-dimethylcyclohexene. The latter compound and 3,6-diferrocenyl-3,6-diisopropyltricyclo[3.1.0.0^2,4]hexane were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. Possible reaction pathways are discussed.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial activity of some acridone derivatives bearing 1,3,4-oxadiazole moiety

Novel acridone derivatives bearing 1,3,4-moiety were synthesized by intramolecular cyclization of N´-[2-(9-oxoacridin-10(9H)-yl)acetyl]arylhydrazides. Study of antimicrobial activity of the synthesized compounds reveals that some of them are more active than the comparator drug rivanol.     

Determination of Total Organic Sulfur in Petroleum Products

A procedure was proposed for determining total organic sulfur in petroleum products. The procedure involves the exhaustive hydrogenolysis of sulfur-containing compounds in an autonomous quartz flow reactor under a hydrogen atmosphere at 1000 ± 50°C with the trapping of the hydrogen sulfide formed in an aqueous solution of an alkali followed by the gas-chromatographic determination of H₂S in the trapping solution using dynamic reaction gas extraction and selective flame-photometric detection. The determination limit was 0.01 wt % for sample volumes below 30 L; the relative standard deviation was 7% on average.     

Nonlinear optical properties of thermally stable silicon-containing poly(o-hydroxyamide) with a covalently bound chromophore in a side chain

The time dependence of the nonlinear optical properties of the films prepared from silicon-containing poly(o-hydroxyamide) with a covalently bound 4-nitroazobenzene-based chromophore in a side chain is investigated in isothermal and thermally stimulated modes. It is revealed that, when the onium salt, i.e., triphenylsulfonium hexafluorophosphate, is added to a polymer solution, the second harmonic generation signal is characterized by an unusual time dependence. The assumption is made that the introduction of the onium salt favors the formation of the benzoxazole structure during the process of polarization (poling). This structure facilitates the orientation of nonlinear optical fragments and, hence, leads to an improvement of the nonlinear optical properties of the polymer film.
