Crystal Structure, Electrical Transport, and Magnetic Properties of Niobium Monophosphide

Large single crystals of NbP have been prepared. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study shows that it crystallizes in tetragonal symmetry with space group I4(1)md (No. 109) and lattice parameters a = 3.3324(2) ?, c = 11.3705(7) ?, and Z = 4. A full matrix least-squares refinement based on a unique data set of 285 reflections (I> 2sigma(I)) yielded R(F) = 0.017 and R(w)(F(2)) = 0.046 for nine variables. The unit cell consists of one unique Nb and one P, each in trigonal prismatic coordination with the other element. There are two short and four long bond distances of Nb-P. The Nb-Nb bond distances are significantly shorter than R(c) = 4.09 ?, the critical distance required for good Nb-Nb 4d orbital overlap for niobium metal-metal bonds. NbP shows metallic behavior with rho = 4.5 x 10(-)(5) Omega cm at room temperature. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on a collection of randomly oriented single crystals indicate very weak Pauli paramagnetism ( approximately 10(-)(5) emu/mol). A discussion of the structure as well as the physical properties of NbP compared with those of previous results are presented. The band structure of NbP based on the extended Hückel (tight-binding) calculations is presented along with an analysis that reveals that the valence band is built up from three center bonds localized within Nb(3) triangles.     

Synthesis of Oligosaccharide Structures from the Lipopolysaccharide of Moraxella catarrhalis

The synthesis of the octasaccharide [p-(trifluoroacetamido)phenyl]ethyl 4-O-[2-O-(2-acetamido-2-deoxy-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-6-O-[2-O-[4-O-(4-O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-beta-D-galactopyranosyl)-alpha-D-glucopyranosyl]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl]-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside, representing the outer part of the lipooligosaccharide from Moraxella catarrhalis serotype A, is described, together with a hepta-, a hexa-, and a pentasaccaride, composing parts thereof with shorter oligosaccharide chains substituted in the 6-position of the central 3,4,6-branched glucose moiety. The versatility of the use of thioglycosides in oligosaccharide synthesis is shown, since throughout the synthesis thioglycosides are used as glycosyl donor precursors, either directly in dimethyl(methylthio)sulfonium triflate (DMTST)-promoted coupling reactions or after conversion to the corresponding glycosyl bromide in silver triflate-promoted couplings. The effects of different protecting groups, anomeric leaving groups, and solvents used in the various coupling reactions are often substantial, which necessitates the use of easily convertible intermediates.     

Quantification of antimony depth profiles in Sb-doped tin dioxide thin films

Sb-doped SnO(2) thin films, deposited by atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) for gas sensor applications, have been characterized by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). Quantification of the depth profile data has been carried out by preparing a series of ion implanted standards. Average concentrations determined by SIMS have been compared with Sb/Sn ratios obtained by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry and proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) spectrometry and have been found to be in good agreement. However, a detection limit of 5x10(18) at cm(-3) could only be obtained because of mass interferences. SIMS data show that the ALE technique can be used to produce a controllable growth and doping of thin films.     

Convex nonagons with five intervertex distances

The vertices of a convex planar nonagon determine exactly five distances if and only if they are nine vertices of a regular 10-gon or a regular 11-gon. This result has important ties to related concerns, including the maximum number of points in the plane that determine exactly five distances and, for each n7, the samllest t for which there exists a convex n-gon whose vertices determine t distances and are not all on one circle.
