Steady vortical flow around a finite plate

An explicit solution for a layer of fluid with constant vorticitysurrounding a thin plate of finite length is obtained usingelementary conformal mapping methods. In the limit of largeplate length the behaviour of the solution near the ends ofthe plate tends to that of the previously known solution fora semi-infinite plate. Contour dynamics is used to investigatethe stability of the steady solutions.

Numerical predictions for unsteady viscous flow past an array of cylinders

The unsteady two-dimensional flow around an array of circular cylinders submerged in a uniform onset flow is analysed. The fluid is taken to be viscous and incompressible. The array of cylinders consists of two horizontal rows extending to infinity in the upstream and downstream directions. The centre-to-centre distance between adjacent cylinders is fixed at three diameters, and the rows are staggered. Advantage is taken of spatially periodic boundary conditions in the flow direction. This reduces the computational domain to a rectangular region surrounding a single circular cylinder. Two cases, for Reynolds numbers of 1000 and 10,000, are presented.     

An Index for 4 Dimensional Super Conformal Theories

We present a trace formula for an index over the spectrum of four dimensional superconformal field theories on S ³ × time. Our index receives contributions from states invariant under at least one supercharge and captures all information – that may be obtained purely from group theory – about protected short representations in 4 dimensional superconformal field theories. In the case of the theory our index is a function of four continuous variables. We compute it at weak coupling using gauge theory and at strong coupling by summing over the spectrum of free massless particles in AdS ₅ × S ⁵ and find perfect agreement at large N and small charges. Our index does not reproduce the entropy of supersymmetric black holes in AdS ₅, but this is not a contradiction, as it differs qualitatively from the partition function over supersymmetric states of the theory. We note that entropy for some small supersymmetric AdS ₅ black holes may be reproduced via a D-brane counting involving giant gravitons. For big black holes we find a qualitative (but not exact) agreement with the naive counting of BPS states in the free Yang Mills theory. In this paper we also evaluate and study the partition function over the chiral ring in the Yang Mills theory.

Cross-section measurement of charged-pion photoproduction from hydrogen and deuterium

We have measured the differential cross section for the gamman-->pi(-)p and gammap-->pi(+)n reactions at theta(c.m.)=90 degrees in the photon energy range from 1.1 to 5.5 GeV at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The data at E(gamma) greater, similar 3.3 GeV exhibit a global scaling behavior for both pi(-) and pi(+) photoproduction, consistent with the constituent counting rule and the existing pi(+) photoproduction data. Possible oscillations around the scaling value are suggested by these new data. The data show enhancement in the scaled cross section at a center-of-mass energy near 2.2 GeV. The cross section ratio of exclusive pi(-) to pi(+) photoproduction at high energy is consistent with the prediction based on one-hard-gluon-exchange diagrams.
