Fourier method in an initial-boundary value problem for a first-order partial differential equation with involution

The Fourier method is used to obtain a classical solution of an initial-boundary value problem for a first-order partial differential equation with involution in the function and its derivative. The series Σ produced by the Fourier method as a formal solution of the problem is represented as Σ = S ₀ + (Σ − Σ₀₎, where Σ₀ is the formal solution of a special reference problem for which the sum S ₀ can be explicitly calculated. Refined asymptotic formulas for the solution of the Dirac system are used to show that the series Σ − Σ₀ and the series obtained from it by termwise differentiation converge uniformly. Minimal smoothness assumptions are imposed on the initial data of the problem.     

Construction of a dynamical matrix for an HCP crystal using phonon data at the symmetry points of the Brillouin zone and elastic constants

General analytical expressions are obtained for the dynamical matrix D(k) and the elastic constants C _ik in an HCP crystal in terms of the Born-von Karman (BvK) parameters. An analytical method is proposed for constructing D(k) on the basis of data about the phonon frequencies ω _i (N) at the symmetry points of the Brillouin zone and the elastic constants C _ik . A number of relations between the values of ω _i (N) and C _ik are presented for conventional interaction models. It is shown that the standard method for determining BvK parameters by fitting them to experimental phonon spectra in HCP lattices is, as a rule, ambiguous, whereas the analytical method proposed allows one to find all the solutions of the problem. The methods developed are illustrated by the construction of dynamical matrices for Tb, Sc, Ti, and Co.     

Plastic Constants of Fracture

Based on the theory of an ideal rigid-plastic body, an approach is formulated for determining fracture constants on the basis of standard mechanical tests on uniaxial extension of plane and cylindrical samples. Instead of the experimentally determined characteristics of fracture of materials (dimensionless elongation and constriction of the sample during its fracture), two invariant tensor characteristics of the degree of sample deformation are introduced, which correspond to the moment of origination of a macrocrack and critical strain at the crack tip determining the process of crack propagation. __________ Translated from Prikladnaya Mekhanika i Tekhnicheskaya Fizika, Vol. 47, No. 2, pp. 147–155, March–April, 2006.
