The sensitivity of all ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) methods is dependent on the trapping efficiency of the instrument. For ITMS instruments utilizing external ion sources, such as laser desorption, trapping efficiency is known to depend on the phase and amplitude of the radio frequency (RF) potential applied to the ring electrode at the time of ion introduction. It is remarkable that, in a considerable body of literature, no consensus exists regarding the effects of these parameters on the efficacy of trapping externally generated ions. In this paper, a summary of the literature is presented in order to highlight significant discrepancies. New laser desorption ion trap mass spectrometry (LD-ITMS) data are also presented, from which conclusions are drawn in our effort to clarify some of the confusion. A small quantum ring with less than ten electrons was studied by transport spectroscopy. For strong coupling to the leads a Kondo effect is observed and used to characterize the spin structure of the system in a wide range of magnetic fields. At small magnetic fields Aharonov-Bohm oscillations influenced by Coulomb interaction appear. They exhibit phase jumps by pi at the Coulomb-blockade resonances. Inside Coulomb-blockade valleys the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations can also be studied due to the finite conductance caused by the Kondo effect. Astonishingly, the maxima of the oscillations show linear shifts with increasing magnetic field and gate voltage. 相似文献

The water droplet laser plasma source has been shown to have many attractive features as a continuous, almost debris-free
source for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and X-ray applications. Through a dual experimental and theoretical study, we analyze
the interaction physics between the laser light and the target. The hydrodynamic laser plasma simulation code, Medusa103 is
used to model the electron density distribution for comparison to electron density distributions obtained through Abel inversion

Ultrasonic attenuation at 2 MHz has been measured through the cholesteric → smectic A transition in cholestryl nonanoate. Very near the transition, 0.1 < (T ? Tc) < 0.6°C, the excess attenuation varies as (T ? Tc)n, where n for four separate runs varies between 0.30 and 0.34. These values are very close to the exponent of 0.33 predicted using a scaling laws and observed for the divergence of the twist viscosity in the nematic phase as the smectic A transition is approached. 相似文献

A discharge-flow apparatus with resonance fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection has been used to monitor O2(b 1σ) production from several reactions of the HO2 radical at 300 K and 1-torr total pressure. O2(b), HO2, and OH were observed when F atoms were added to H2O2 in the gas phase. Signal strengths of O2(b) were proportional to initial concentrations of H2O2 and HO2. These observations were analyzed by using a simple three step mechanism and a more complete computer simulation with 22 reaction steps. The results indicate that the F + HO2 reaction yields O2(b) with an efficiency of (3.6 ± 1.4) × 10?3. By monitoring [O2(b)] and [HO2] upon addition of an excess second reactant to HO2, O2(b) yields from the reactions of HO2 with O, Cl, D, H, and OH were found to be <1 × 10?2, <5 × 10?4, <2 × 10?3, <8 × 10?3, and <1 × 10?3, respectively. Yields of O2(b) from the HO2 ± HO2 reaction were found to be less than 3 × 10?2. 相似文献

All nuclear spectroscopy systems, whether measuring charged particles, X-rays, or gamma-rays, exhibit dead time losses during the counting process due to pulse processing in the electronics. Several techniques have been employed in an effort to reduce the effects of dead time losses on a spectroscopy system including live time clocks and loss-free counting modules. Live time extension techniques give accurate results when measuring samples in which the activity remains roughly constant during the measuring process (i.e., the dead time does not change significantly during a single measurement period). The loss-free counting method of correcting for dead time losses, as introduced by HARMS and improved by WESTPHAL (US Patent No. 4,476,384) give better results than live time extension techniques when the counting rate changes significantly during the measurement. However, loss-free counting methods are limited by the fact that an estimation of the uncertainty associated with the spectral counts can not be easily determined, because the corrected data no longer obeys Poisson statistics. Therefore, accurate analysis of the spectral data including the uncertainty calculations is difficult to achieve. The Ortec® DSPEC
PLUS
implements an improved zero dead time method that accurately predicts the uncertainty from counting statistics and overcomes the limitations of previous loss-free counting methods. The uncertainty in the dead-time corrected spectrum is calculated and stored with the spectral data (Patent Pending). The GammaVision-32® analysis algorithm has been improved to propagate this uncertainty through the activity calculation. Two experiments are set up to verify these innovations. The experiments show that the new method gives the same reported activity and associated uncertainties as the well-proven Gedcke-Hale live time clock. It is thus shown that over a wide range of dead times the new ZDT method tracks the true counting rate as if it had zero dead time, and yields an accurate estimation of the statistical uncertainty in the reported counts. 相似文献

Important developments in the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technique have generated new perspectives regarding SNP genotyping, which are particularly promising for ancient population-based studies. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the application of a MALDI-TOF MS-based SNP genotyping technique, called iPLEX(?) Gold, to analyze Amerindian ancient DNA samples. The first objective was to test the sensitivity of the method, which is recommended for DNA quantities between 10 and 5?ng, for ancient biological samples containing DNA molecules that were degraded and present in minute quantities. The second objective was to detail the advantages of this technique for studies on ancient populations. Two multiplexes were designed, allowing the major Amerindian mitochondrial and Y haplogroups to be determined simultaneously. This analysis has never been described before. Results demonstrated the reliability and accuracy of the method; data were obtained for both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA using picogram (pg) quantities of nucleic acid. This technique has the advantages of both MS and minisequencing techniques; thus, it should be included in the protocols for future ancient DNA studies. 相似文献
